Antioxidant Supplements and Diabetic Retinopathy

2014

Abstract Conventional treatments for diabetic retinopathy (DR) includes glycemic control, laser photocoagulation, vitrectomy, intravitreal triamcinolone, and intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents. However these strategies have not proved capable of halting the progression of this disease in all cases. The mechanisms leading to DR are not fully understood, but there is a growing body of evidence showing that oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in the development of this diabetic complication. In fact it has been proposed that oxidative stress is the initial and maintaining event that triggers and provides feedback to the other pathophysiological pathways related to DR…

Early Markers of Cardiovascular Damage

1998

Cardiovascular (CV) disease represents at present one of the most frequent causes of morbidity and mortality in western industrialized countries. The prevalence of CV disease is increased in subjects with hypertension (HTN), diabetes mellitus (DM), dyslipidemia and central obesity. In these conditions, it is possible to detect early alterations of metabolic, hormonal, hemostatic, genetic and hemodynamic parameters, frequently associated with morphological and functional modifications of the left ventricle (LV) and the vascular system. Since these changes generally precede and are closely related to the occurrence of CV events, they may be considered early markers of CV disease. In recent ye…

Dental considerations for the patient with diabetes

2011

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most frequent pathologies that dentists encounter, due to its high prevalence worldwide. It is diagnosed by the repeated obtaining of fasting plasma glucose levels of 126 mg/ dl or higher, or glycosylated hemoglobin of 6’5% or higher. Diabetes (especially if it is not well controlled) brings with it a greater risk of periodontal disease, which is the most frequent complication. On the other hand, the possible influence of periodontal disease on glycemic control is still not well established. Other reported manifestations are xerostomia, sialadenosis and burning mouth syndrome. With regard to dental caries, oral lichen planus and candidosis, recent studie…

0053: Incidence of cardiovascular events following myocardial infarction in France: an observational analysis using a claims database

2016

Objectives To describe the characteristics and treatments of patients having a myocardial infarction (MI) and estimate the incidence of cardiovascular events following the index MI, in the French Health Insurance database. Method A cohort of patients who had a MI in France between 2007 and 2011 was extracted from a claim database: the Echantillon Generaliste de Beneficiaires (a 1% representative sample of subjects covered by the general health insurance (?600,000 patients). The incidence of cardiovascular events following the index MI was estimated using the Kaplan Meier method. Results 1,977 subjects were identified with an index myocardial MI: 2/3 were males, mean age=67.2 y, 20.6% had di…

Die rechnergestützte Diabeteseinstellung

1985

Blood glucose self-monitoring is essential to stabilize diabetes on a normoglycemic level. But often patients do not find the correct insulin adaptation. Therefore, we developed a computerized system which adapts insulin doses using a control matrix. During a first in-patient period we had a remarkable blood glucose normalization and stabilization.

Low risk of severe hypoglycaemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus starting insulin therapy with premixed insulin analogues BID in outpatient…

2012

Summary Aims:  The choice of insulin at initiation in type 2 diabetes remains controversial. The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of self-reported severe hypoglycaemia associated with premixed insulin analogues in routine clinical care. Methods:  A 12-month, prospective, observational, multicentre study in patients starting a commonly prescribed premixed insulin analogue (either insulin lispro 25/75 or biphasic insulin aspart 30/70, twice daily) after suboptimal glycaemic control on oral antidiabetic agents. Treatment decisions were made solely in the course of usual practice. Results:  Study follow-up was completed by 991 (85.5%) of the 1150 patients enrolled. At baseline, me…

Consenso español de salud física del paciente con depresión

2014

Comorbidity between depression and physical illnesses is very common and has a significant impact on the health and management of the patient. With the support of the Sociedades Espanolas de Psiquiatria y Psiquiatria Biologica, and Sociedad Espanola de Medicos de Atencion Primaria (SEMERGEN) a consensus was prepared on physical health in patients with depression and is summarized in the present work. The literature review highlighted the high frequency of cardiovascular and endocrine-metabolic disorders in patients with depression such as diabetes and obesity, thus making the primary and secondary prevention recommendations for patients with cardiovascular or metabolic risk applicable to pa…

Der kurze popliteodistale Venenbypass beim diabetischen Fußsyndrom DFS

2003

Purpose: World wide increase of diabetes compound with diabetic foot syndrome becomes a challenge in vascular surgery to avoid limb loss. In diabetics a special pattern of atherosclerosis is prevalent with disease limited to the infrageniculate arteries but sparing inflow vessels and distal tibial and pedal arteries. This provides short bypass grafting from popliteal to tibial and pedal arteries, a concept first described by F. Veith in 1981. Methods: Diabetics with severe atherosclerotic disease and limb-threatening ischemia got general evaluation and vascular imaging. Falling in this special category the patients underwent short vein bypass grafting originating at the first or third popli…
