Open Cell Al-Si Foams by a Sintering and Dissolution Process

Open cell foams from AlSi12 alloy were successfully fabricated by the Sintering and Dissolution Process, using NaCl as space holder (60 %). The size of the aluminum alloy powder is less than 45 μm, while the space holder powder size is 315-500 μm, 630-800 μm and 800-1250 μm respectively. The appropriate quantities of alloy powder and salt were mixed and cold pressed at 250 MPa. The sintering process was done at 500 °C and 545 °C, in vacuum (10-5 torr) for 10, 20 and 30 minutes respectively. The space holder was eliminated by holding the sintered samples in running hot water (70 °C). After the salt was dissolved, the samples were dried and the mass loss was analyzed. Hybrid materials from organic polymers and inorganic salts

The prepaparation of amorphous, homogeneous blends of zwitterionic polymers and transition metal salts was investigated. Homogeneous miscibility was achieved in many cases up to equimolar amounts of salt, depending on the anion and cation chosen. Various analytical techniques point to a solid state solution of the inorganic ions in the polymer matrix.

Friction between Polymer Brushes in Good Solvent Conditions:  Steady-State Sliding versus Transient Behavior

Previous molecular dynamics simulations of friction between polymer brushes in relative sliding motion [Kreer, T.; Muser, M. H.; Binder, K.; Klein, J. Langmuir 2001, 17, 7804] are extended beyond steady-state conditions. We study two different protocols:  (i) stop and return and (ii) stop and go. In protocol (i), the relative, lateral motion between the two surfaces is stopped abruptly and reimposed opposite to the initial direction after the system could relax for some time. Protocol (ii) is similar except that the sliding direction is maintained. The first example of a two-dimensional inorganic hybrid material with cobalt as an open-shell transition metal ion and 4-phosphonbenzoic acid as a linker is presented together with its copper analogue. For both metal ions the inorganic part consists of edge-sharing metal–oxygen octahedra leading to a metal honeycomb motif. The magnetic properties of the cobalt compound are reported together with those of the corresponding copper compound based on the remarkably six-coordinated copper(II) ions.

Glutathione metabolism and heavy metal detoxification in Schizosaccharomyces pombe

Sixty glutathione-deficient mutants (gsh −) of Schizosaccharomyces pombe have been isolated by their resistance towards the mutagen N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) and their sensitivity to the heavy metal Cadmium (Cd). fifty-three mutants show glutathione contents of less than 5% compared with the wild-type. The residual glutathione contents correlate with the resistance to MNNG, with the sensitivity to Cd and with the growth rate in minimal medium. The gsh −, Cd-sensitive (Cd s) mutants also show sensitivity to other heavy metals. Due to the high stiffness and strength, as well as their ability to act as conductors, carbon nanotubes are under intense investigation as fillers in polymeric materials. The nature of the carbon nanotube/polymer bonding and the curvature of the carbon nanotubes within the polymer have arisen as particular factors in the efficacy of the carbon nanotubes to actually provide any enhanced stiffness or strength to the nanocomposite. Fabrication of soft-etched nanoporous polyimide membranes for ionic conduction and discrimination

Abstract Ionic selectivity in nanopores is usually based either on steric or charge exclusion mechanisms. By simultaneously incorporating both mechanisms into a functionalized membrane, an improved control over selectivity can be achieved. We describe the fabrication and experimental characterization of alkali metal cation-selective nanopores in heavy ion-tracked polyimide (PI) membranes using the soft-etching (SE) technique. The latent ion tracks in the PI membrane are selectively dissolved by an organic solvent to form tiny pores without affecting the bulk material. From Bowls to Capsules: Assembly of Hexanuclear Ni II Rings Tailored by Alkali Cations

An anionic hexanuclear NiII metallamacrocycle with endo and exo linking sites has been employed as a building block to generate a series of capsules and bowls of nanometric size. The supramolecular arrangement of the {Ni6 } rings was tailored by the size of the alkali cations, showing the transition from {Ni6 -M2 -Ni6 } capsules (M=LiI and NaI ) to {Ni6 -M} bowls (M=KI and CsI ). The alkyl co-cations are determinant to stabilize the assemblies by means of CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions on the exo side of the metallamacrocycles. Synthesis of aldonamide siloxanes by hydrosilylation

Abstract The synthesis of hydrophobic/hydrophilic hybrid polymers based on polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) and carbohydrate derivatives involving a hydrosilylation step is reported. Starting with poly(dimethyl- co -hydromethyl)siloxanes (PDMS- co -HMS), O -acetylated N -allylaldonamides of various sugars can be attached to the siloxane backbone using platinum catalysts. The characteristics of different transition metal complexes in the polymer-analogous formation of SiC bonds are investigated.
