Beam-induced and cosmic-ray backgrounds observed in the ATLAS detector during the LHC 2012 proton-proton running period

This paper discusses various observations on beam-induced and cosmic-ray backgrounds in the ATLAS detector during the LHC 2012 proton-proton run. Building on published results based on 2011 data, the correlations between background and residual pressure of the beam vacuum are revisited. Ghost charge evolution over 2012 and its role for backgrounds are evaluated. New methods to monitor ghost charge with beam-gas rates are presented and observations of LHC abort gap population by ghost charge are discussed in detail. Operator perturbation theory and the symmetry properties of the axially symmetric XYZ3 (C3v) type molecules are used for the determination of the spectroscopic parameters in the form of functions of structural parameters and parameters of the intramolecular potential function. Several relations between sets of spectroscopic parameters of these molecules are obtained. The ‘expanded local mode’ model and the general isotopic substitution theory are used to estimate the relations between spectroscopic parameters of CH3D and CHD3, on one hand, and with the Td symmetric isotopic species, CH4, on the other hand.
