The airway response to deep inspirations decreases with COPD severity and is associated with airway distensibility assessed by computed tomography.
2008
In patients with mild chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the effect of deep inspirations (DIs) to reverse methacholine-induced bronchoconstriction is largely attenuated. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the effectiveness of DI is reduced with increasing disease severity and that this is associated with a reduction in the ability of DI to distend the airways. Fifteen subjects [Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) stage I–II: n = 7; GOLD stage III–IV: n = 8] underwent methacholine bronchoprovocation in the absence of DI, followed by DI. The effectiveness of DI was assessed by their ability to improve inspiratory vital capacity and forced expira…
Tell Shiyukh Tahtani, Syria Report of the 2006-09 Seasons
2012
The Italian excavations at Shiyukh Tahtani have recently resumed, revealing a long occupation sequence on the mound’s eastern slope (Area CD). In Trench D23, on the summit, an Iron Age level II building contained a rich array of pottery, sheep knuckle bones, clay ‘bobbins’ and an unstratified Egyptian scarab of Menkheperre. An earlier massive building (LBA ?) was also excavated below the Iron Age II occupation. Halfway down the slope the lower level of a large burnt complex of Middle Bronze I date contained rich finds and various burials characterized by peculiar rituals. Finally, in a deep trench down below the slope, EB I-II remains included niched mud-brick architecture of fine Mesopo…
Early Syrian Bottles
2014
Near Eastern archaeologists are accustomed today to labelling as “Syrian bottles” various kinds of oil/perfume fasks that enjoyed a wide popularity in Syria during the 3rd millennium. Owing to the volatile nature of their contents and the lack of archeometric analysis it has not been possible so far to ascertain whether these vessels were scent or unguent vases. Whatever the case, since they have been found far afeld from the core region of production it is clear that they were a luxury item of long-distance trade and are thus today – if possible misattributions are discarded – a valuable indicator of exchange networks and for establishing synchronisms among distant areas of the ancient Nea…
The diaptomid fauna of Israel (Copepoda, Calanoida, Diaptomidae), with notes on the systematics of Arctodiaptomus similis (Baird, 1859) and Arctodiap…
2014
Background: To date, only scarce information is available about the diaptomid copepods of the Middle East despite the ecological and biogeographical importance of the family Diaptomidae in the inland waters of the Holarctic region. Moreover, the taxonomic status of some of the taxa occurring in the area is in need of revision. We studied crustaceans collected from temporary and permanent lentic water bodies in Israel with the aim of providing an updated census of the diaptomid copepods occurring in the country. Furthermore, we morphologically and genetically analysed samples of Arctodiaptomus similis s.l. to shed light on its taxonomy. Results: Five diaptomid taxa were collected during this…

Boceprevir is highly effective in treatment-experienced hepatitis C virus-positive genotype-1 menopausal women
2014
AIM: To investigate the safety/efficacy of Boceprevirbased triple therapy in hepatitis C virus (HCV)-G1 menopausal women who were historic relapsers, partial-responders and null-responders. METHODS: In this single-assignment, unblinded study, we treated fifty-six menopausal women with HCV-G1, 46% F3-F4, and previous PEG-α/RBV failure (7% null, 41% non-responder, and 52% relapser) with 4 wk lead-in with PEG-IFNα2b/RBV followed by PEGIFNα2b/RBV+Boceprevir for 32 wk, with an additional 12 wk of PEG-IFN-α-2b/RBV if patients were HCV-RNA-positive by week 8. In previous null-responders, 44 wk of triple therapy was used. The primary objective of retreatment was to verify whether a sustained virolo…
Collapse or Continuity? The case of the EB-MB transition at Tell Shiyukh Tahtani
2007
Apocryphal Passions of the Apostles in Croatian Glagolitic Texts
2020
In the course of the Middle Ages, apocryphal and hagiographic texts of The Acts of the Apostles of various origins became part of the Croatian Glagolitic literature. The Passion of Saint Andrew, for example, is documented in the sanctorale of nineteen Croatian Glagolitic breviaries dating from the period between the 14th and mid-16th centuries. The Glagolitic Passion is an abbreviated translation of the Latin Epistula presbyterorum et diaconorum Achaiae (BHL 428) from the 6th century. The texts of the Passion of Jamesthe Apostle (Jacobus Maior, apost., filius Zebedaei, frater Johannis, Passio, BHL 4057) are found in two Glagolitic breviaries, namely the Breviary of Vitus of Omi?alj (1396) a…
Les traductions latines de textes hagiographiques byzantins de la période médio-byzantine
2019
The present article attempts to record and present as much as possible the Latin translations of hagiographical texts during the Middle Byzantine period. The texts are first approached from a literary point of view, then a historical presentation is attempted, referring to their possible functional use in the traditions of the two churches, Constantinople and Rome.
Robotic versus laparoscopic radical hysterectomy in early cervical cancer: A case matched control study
2018
Abstract Background This study aims at evaluating the feasibility, surgical outcome and oncological results observed after robotic radical hysterectomy (RH) compared to laparoscopy for patients with early stage cervical cancer (ECC) patients. Methods Between January 2010 and October 2016, 210 patients underwent RH for treatment of ECC: 70 underwent robotic approach (Cases), and 140 underwent laparoscopic approach (Controls). Results There was no statistically significant difference between the two approaches with regard to clinical patient characteristics and in terms of extent of RH and rate of pelvic and aortic lymphadenectomy. Operative time was significantly longer in the robotic versus…
