Vulnerability in Migration: The Applicability of European Recommendations, International Reports and Guidelines to the Italian System of Reception an…

2018

The European Parliament’s Report focuses on the integration processes for a particular category of refugees, considered as belonging to “vulnerable groups”, namely women seeking international protection and female refugees. Women seeking international protection or refugees, in fact, are bearers of demands and needs which, in part, are specific to all those people who, often forced to abruptly abandon their countries of origin, seek protection in host countries, bringing with themselves a heavy burden of persecution, war, violence and poverty. The humanitarian response along the routes of the eastern Mediterranean and the western Balkans has set as a priority the introduction of measures to…

AYLAN E COLONIA. DALLA GUERRA AI MIGRANTI AL RESPINGIMENTO DEI REFUGEES

2017

This contribution aims to shed light on the specific mechanism of migrant categorization implemented by the so-called «Hotspot approach», which was launched by the EU Agenda on Migration in May 2015. This approach is here envisaged as a response to the current changes in the composition of migration towards Europe. Provisions contained in EU and Italian policy documents are compared with concrete practices enacted on the ground by investigating two case studies: the initial opening of the Hotspot at Milo, in Trapani, and the first months of functioning of the Hotspot on Lampedusa. The empirical research covers the period between the last months of 2015 and the beginning of 2016. The short-t…

2019

This study is devoted to the research of human resources as a main source of sustainable regional development in Latvia. It is focused on two key concepts of human capital and migration. The aim of the study is to explore return migration geographies by looking at young return migrants as a resource and preconditions for sustainable regional development essential to Latvia.Return migration to the regions of Latvia is examined by two main research questions. What are the most recent return migrant characteristics in Latvia? How does return migration of young Latvians translates into regional geographies of return migration?Drawing on most recent available statistical data we elaborate on the…

A review of estimating population exposure to sea-level rise and the relevance for migration

2020

Abstract This review analyses global or near-global estimates of population exposure to sea-level rise (SLR) and related hazards, followed by critically examining subsequent estimates of population migration due to this exposure. Our review identified 33 publications that provide global or near-global estimates of population exposure to SLR and associated hazards. They fall into three main categories of exposure, based on definitions in the publications: (i) the population impacted by specified levels of SLR; (ii) the number of people living in floodplains that are subject to coastal flood events with a specific return period; and (iii) the population living in low-elevation coastal zones. …

Categorizing migrants by disempowering the right to asylum. A focus on the Sicilian implementation of the “Hotspot approach”.

536. Internal and international mobility of Romanian immigrants during the crisis

2016

Shikonin promotes intestinal wound healing in vitro via induction of TGF-β release in IEC-18 cells

2013

The intestinal barrier is a complex system with a dynamic structure that is designed for the maintenance of homeostasis in healthy individuals. Ulcerative colitis, one of the main manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease, is characterized by an inadequate and delayed wound healing. Shikonin, the active principle in the root of Lithospermum erythrorhizon, has demonstrated its ability to attenuate dextran sulfate sodium-induced ulcerative colitis in mice. Moreover, the root of L. erythrorhizon has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for treatment of burns, anal ulcers, hemorrhoids and skin wounds. However, the effect of shikonin on intestinal wound healing is unknown. Using an in vi…

Dissemination of oenological yeasts through bird migration in Sicily.

2009

The composition of yeast communities on shown to be dependent on several factors, including geographical location of the vineyard, type of soil, age of the vineyard, grapevine variety and harvesting technique. Moreover, insects and birds were in part responsible for the dissemination of fermentative yeasts during their feeding (Francesca et al, 2009). In order to evaluate the dissemination of fermenting yeasts, migrating and vineyard inhabiting birds were caught and ringed in four experimental sites: “Riserva Naturale Integrale Lago Preola e Ghorghi Tondi” (Mazara del Vallo, TP) and the Sicilian islands of Lampedusa, Ustica and Linosa. The last sites represent important stop-over for migrat…

Pathogenic microorganisms carried by migratorybirds passing through the territory of the island ofUstica, Sicily (Italy)

2011

Several studies have shown that migratory birds play an important role in the ecology, circulation and dissemination of pathogenic organisms. In October 2006, a health status evaluation was performed on a large population of migratory birds passing through the territory of Ustica (Italy), an island located on the migration route of many species of birds to Africa, and various laboratory tests were conducted. In total, 218 faecal swabs and the internal organs of 21 subjects found dead in nets were collected for bacteriological and virological examination, including avian influenza and Newcastle disease. In addition, 19 pooled fresh faecal samples were collected for mycological examination. T…
