The German student Oscar Bunemann, in trouble with the Nazi authorities in the mid-1930s, chose to emigrate to Britain and pursue a PhD there. After emigration, his surname appears as Buneman. On the verge of completing his degree in 1940, he was detained as an enemy alien and spent almost a year in internment. Upon release, he found work as an atomic scientist in England, and went on to lead a post-war career as a pioneering plasma physicist in the USA.We study forced migration of European scientists before and during the Second World War, and scientific patronage in the host countries. Abstract Afrocanarian blue tits (Cyanistes teneriffae) have a scattered distribution on the Canary Islands and on the North African continent. To date, the Canary Islands have been considered the species’ main Pleistocene evolutionary center, but their colonization pathways remain uncertain. We set out to reconstruct a dated multi-gene phylogeny and ancestral ranges for Cyanistes tit species including the currently unstudied, peripheral Libyan population of C. t. cyrenaicae. Purpose To test and validate a method for measuring the optical quality and optical power of monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) in the presence of a tilt or a decentration as well as its optical power. Methods The experimental system consists of an artificial eye (wet-cell) and a commercial aberrometer with a Shack-Hartmann sensor. Optical image quality parameters such as point spread function (PSF), modulation transfer function (MTF), and the simulations of the retinal image of an extended object are computed from the in vitro wavefront data of an IOL. It compares data from interviews with family carers in Germany and the Netherlands. While Germany’s old-age care regime places a high responsibility and financial burden on the family, the Netherlands provides a broad range of publicly funded health and social care services. Refugee Crisis in the European Union

This chapter outlines the myriad push and pull factors that led to the refugee crisis, describes the scale of the migration, and discusses how the European Union (EU) nations and the EU as a whole responded to the crisis. Four push factors are described: the change in migration policy in Macedonia that opened up the Balkan route to the EU, the war in Syria, political and economic instability in sub-Saharan Africa, and climate change. The primary pull factors are economic opportunities and political and religious freedoms. The discussion of the scale of the migration and how each nation responded provides in-depth discussion of how individual EU nations responded to the refugee crisis.

The Campi Flegrei is an active caldera located on the coastal zone of SW Italy (Fig. 1), close to the town of Naples Bay, that has been characterized by explosive activity and unrest throughout the Late Quaternary. This area represents a very active segment of the Eastern Tyrrhenian margin and may be regarded as an ideal laboratory to understand the mechanisms of caldera dynamics and the interplay between volcanism, tectonics and sedimentary processes along a continental back-arc margin.
