Year-round variation in the isotopic niche of Scopoli's shearwater (Calonectris diomedea) breeding in contrasting sea regions of the Mediterranean Sea

2022

Top marine predators are key components of marine food webs. Among them, long-distance migratory seabirds, which travel across different marine ecosystems over the year, may experience important year-round changes in terms of oceanographic conditions and availability of trophic resources. We tested whether this was the case in the Scopoli’s shearwater (Calonectris diomedea), a trans-equatorial migrant and top predator, by sampling birds breeding in three environmentally different regions of the Mediterranean Sea. The analysis of positional data and stable isotopes (δ13 C and δ15N) of target feathers revealed that birds from the three regions were spatially segregated during the breeding per…

HUMAN PEOPLING OF SICILY DURING QUATERNARY

2015

ABSTRACT The early human peopling of Sicily and Western Mediterranean shores is one of the debated topic in the archaeological and anthropological literature over the twentieth century. This discussion involves not only the specific issue of the peopling of the continental island, but fundamentally the reconstruction of human migration routes and dispersals across the Mediterranean area during Early and Middle Pleistocene. Even if the common route of faunal and human movement is considered from North, and relative to the Messina strait crossing, several authors, on the base of archaeological evidences, hypothesized an early peopling and an African provenance through the Sicilian Channel. Th…

WIN modulates osteosarcoma MG63 cell migration by inhibiting MMPs activity and adjusting intra- and extra-cellular SPARC differential expression

2014

Invasion of cancer cells into surrounding tissue is an initial step in tumor metastasis. This event, which requires migration of cancer cells and attachment to extracellular matrix (ECM), is regulated by elements of the local microenvironment, including ECM architecture. After having demonstrated the ability of the synthetic cannabinoid WIN55,512 to induce osteosarcoma MG63 cell death (1), we studied the effects of WIN on MG63 cell migration. Wound healing assay was performed to measure the ability of cells to migrate and fill the gap obtained by physical disruption of cell monolayer (2). We observed a significant delay in wound closure in 5 M WIN treated cells compared to untreated cells …

Teoria e pratica nel progetto di architettura. Quali contenuti?

2016

Sequential reasoning: the case of the tamils in Palermo

2016

The design choices need to be addressed to a process whose ultimate goal is to reconstruct the architecture to define a particular sequence linked to the idea of contemporary interior exists in a city, in the light of a thick organic world of silezi eloquent (Carlos Marti Aris, 2002). The designer plays an important role in the definition of a possible innovative strategy for refunctionalization which will act as a mediator between the social/contextual, and the technical and economic needs between truth and method (Gadamer, 2000). It is important to remember that the concept of the interior has changed dramatically and this concept is complex and controversial. You enter by crossing a thre…

A Chain of Words as an Introduction: Human Dignity, Language, Identity, Citizenship, Values, Human Capital and Urban Spaces

2022

To analyze the issue of cities-migrants interactions, as well as social-monetary values interactions, it is necessary to place it in a “higher” context, in order not to risk losing the necessary connection with universal ethical principles, and in a “broader” one, in which understanding complexity on a global scale interprets local conditions. The study of migration flows and urban dynamics, as well as housing markets, through theoretical paradigms and scientific tools from different disciplines provides an opportunity to learn and compare, dialogue and interface with new keys to understanding the problem, or with alternative interpretations and unprecedented perspectives in the path of mul…

The egoistic approach to parallel process migration into heterogeneous workstation network

1996

Abstract A new approach to the allocation of processes in a distributed system is discussed. The proposed solution deals with process migration into heterogeneous systems by means of a strategy that delegates the individual parallel applications to manage the migration of their processes by themselves, on the basis of their own performance objectives. This approach is discussed in opposition to the global scheduling based one, and the load balancing objective is pursued as an effect of the optimization of individual applications. A new performance evaluation criterion is introduced that consists in monitoring the delays that occur when two parallel processes run towards a common synchroniza…

Il Patto sulle migrazioni e l’asilo della Commissione europea del 23 settembre 2020 e il dovere di soccorso in mare

2021

The pact on asylum and migration, presented by the European Commission on 23 September 2020, addresses some of the problems related to search and rescue operations and the following disembarkations. The present paper is skeptical about the real capacity of the pact to reduce the existing tensions among Member States in this field; it also underlines the ambiguities of the pact concerning Member States’ cooperation with NGOs engaged in SAR activities
