Introduction: human milk (HM) is considered the best option for feeding healthy infants. Cholesterol (CHOL) is important for proper development of the nervous system, and for hormone and vitamin synthesis in growing infants. Breastfeeding and dietary CHOL intake during infancy have been suggested to affect blood lipid levels and the risk of cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Gas chromatography is the technique most widely used to determine CHOL in HM. The Maillard reaction-related effects that thermal treatments during the manufacturing process and storage (at 20 and 37 degrees C) have on powdered adapted and follow-up milk-based infant formulas were estimated by measuring the available lysine and furfural compounds contents of raw cow milk used in manufacturing, intermediate products and formulas. A fluorimetric method was used to measure the available lysine contents, and free and total furfural compounds were determined by HPLC. Statistically significant losses in available lysine (about 20%) in the infant formulas with respect to raw milk were found. Development and validation of RP-HPLC method for the quantitative estimation of αs1-genetic variants in goat milk

A high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method was developed and validated for separation and quantification of the most common genetic variants of as1-casein in goat’s milk, to evaluate the effect of as1-casein polymorphisms on casein content. Chromatography was carried out by binary gradient technique on a reversed-phase C8 Zorbax column and the detection was made at a wavelength of 214 nm. The procedure was developed using individual raw milk samples of Girgentana goats. Biomonitoring has been used in many types of investigations, including national programmes and epidemiological studies, to explore the occurrence of biomarkers of pesticide exposure in the general population or relevant groups. This review discusses recent studies that measure levels of biomarkers of pesticide exposure in non-invasive human specimens such as urine, breast milk, meconium and hair. Specific and non-specific metabolites of organophosphate and pyrethroid insecticides have been widely investigated in urine, where some of the suitable biomarkers present rates of detection higher than 80%, which stand for an ongoing chronic exposure to traces of these chemicals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-Listeria activity of essential oils (EOs) extracted from the peel of lemons, oranges and tangerines in a fresh cheese produced with pasteurized ewe’s milk. Four cheesemaking trials were performed at the pilot plant scale level, including one control production without the addition of EOs and three experimental productions obtained by the addition of 200 μL/L of each EOs to milk. Abstract The aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of continuous and rotational grazing of different forage species on milk production in ewes. The forage species were chicory (Cichorium intybus L.), a mixture of oat (Avena sativa L.) and berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.), and sulla (Hedysarum coronarium L.). Abstract Two methods — voltammetric and high performance liquid Chromatographic (HPLC) — useful for determining ascorbic acid in foods, were compared to ascertain which of them could be used for routine determination of ascorbic acid in infant formulas. Both methods were used to assay 10 identical samples of an adapted cow's milk infant formula and 10 samples of soya protein formula. Precision was determined, the variance of each method was measured, and the methods were compared with each other. Dynamic light scattering by preserved skimmed cow milk: A comparison of two-colour and three-dimensional cross-correlation experiments

We investigate the dynamic light scattering of preserved skimmed cow milk and compare the performance of a standard two-colour (2C) cross-correlation setup with the recently developed three-dimensional (3D) cross-correlation setup. Undiluted milk could only be investigated using the 3D setup because of too low signal-to-noise ratio of the 2C setup. A tenfold diluted milk, however, could be investigated by both setups, and comparable results for the dynamics of the sample were obtained thus demonstrating the equivalence of the decorrelation schemes. La existencia de diarios oficiales permite a los Estados informar de la actividad legislativa y administrativa. Diferentes estudios han utilizado estos boletines para analizar la información sociosanitaria de un momento histórico determinado. Nos planteamos como objetivo valorar la evolución de las referencias respecto a los expósitos y su relación con las nodrizas en la “Gazeta de Madrid”, permitiendo la categorización en función de los aspectos tratados.
