Environmental impact on historical monuments: The black crusts of the Venice lagoon

Black crusts are typical decay forms on calcareous rocks in polluted urban environments. Their origin is due to “sulphation” reaction of calcium carbonate substrates (CaCO3), as a consequence of pH value decrease caused by SO2 in the polluted atmosphere. They can be therefore defined as a passive air pollution sampler. For the purpose of this work, samples from the historic center of Venice were analyzed. The city of Venice suffers in particular maritime and industrial pollution (Marghera industrial zone). Differential expression of the corticosteroid receptors GR1, GR2 and MR in rainbow trout organs with slow release cortisol implants

The present study describes the transcriptional levels of the corticosteroid receptors (CRs) GR1, GR2 and MR in the different organs of the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in response to a slow release of cortisol, throughout a 10-day period. We show that after short term (1 day after cortisol implantation), when the plasma levels of cortisol emulate an acute stress, the GR2 and MR expression levels were upregulated in the brain and head kidney tissues. This result reflects the role of these organs as regulators of the stress response. Osteoporosis is a systemic bone disease that is characterized by a generalized reduction of the bone mass. It is the main cause of fractures in elderly women. Bone densitometry is used in the lumbar spine and hip in order to detect osteoporosis in its early stages. Different studies have observed a correlation between the bone mineral density of the jaw (BMD) and that of the lumbar spine and/or hip. Comparison of ultrasound and bone mineral density assessment of the calcaneus with different regions of interest in healthy early menopausal women.

This study investigated the effect of different sized regions of interest (ROIs) on quantitative ultrasound (QUS) variables of the calcaneus. The effect on QUS of using a fixed ROI as opposed to an ROI adjusted for foot length was also assessed. Eighty Caucasian women, aged 50-57 yr (mean 53 +/- 2) who were healthy and within 0. 5-5 yr of the onset of menopause participated in this study.
