Virtual reality and 3D printing improve preoperative visualization of 3D liver reconstructions-results from a preclinical comparison of presentation …

2021

BACKGROUND: Preoperative three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions for liver surgery planning have been shown to be effective in reduction of blood loss and operation time. However, the role of the ‘presentation modality’ is not well investigated. We present the first study to compare 3D PDFs, 3D printed models (PR) and virtual reality (VR) 3D models with regard to anatomical orientation and personal preferences in a high volume liver surgery center. METHODS: Thirty participants, 10 medical students, 10 residents, 5 fellows and 5 hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) experts, assigned the tumor-bearing segments of 20 different patient’s individual liver reconstructions. Liver models were presented in a…

Endoscopic palliative management of esophageal and tracheal rupture

2014

The increasing number of patients requiring intensive care and airway support has led to a growing recognition that significant short- and long-term morbidity may be associated with the use of artificial airways; this is despite significant improvements in the materials used in laryngeal tubes, which aim to decrease the trauma associated with long-term intubation. We present the first case, to our knowledge,of huge, nontraumatic, esophageal perforation, widely communicating with the trachea, and which was treated successfully with double endoscopic stent placement.

Darmkontrastierung bei der abdominellen Computertomographie: Wasser oder Kontrastmittel?

1991

The suitability of water as an oral or rectal contrast medium for abdominal CT was studied in 56 patients and compared with an iodine-containing water-soluble contrast medium (ioxital amino acid). In some cases it was impossible to differentiate gastrointestinal structures from extraluminal fluid collections (cystic tumours, ascites, abscesses) and there was poor filling of distal small bowel and colon. The routine use of water can, therefore, not be recommended. In some cases, however, water can result in improved image quality by reducing artifacts and improving the demonstration of the mucosa.

Fully percutaneous insertion and removal of the Impella CP via a subclavian approach

2020

The Impella (Abiomed) is a mechanical circulatory support device which augments cardiac output, but may also unload a left ventricle during venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) [1]. However, the Impella requires an access to a large artery and this may be problematic in a severe peripheral arterial disease. The presented case demonstrates how to insert and remove the Impella CP via a subclavian approach without surgical cutting.
