RAFFAELLA POLETTI, Zanotta. Design per passione, Electa, Milano 2004

2005

Certo, a molti sembrerà esagerato…

mCLT: an application for collaborative learning on a mobile telephone

2005

Mobile technologies offer new opportunities for distance learning and enable people to collaborate anywhere. This paper introduces an innovative mobile platform for computer-supported collaborative learning in which traditional methodologies of collaboration have been improved, based on 3rd-generation mobile telephones. Students can collect and share live data immediately, anywhere and at any time. This enables them to play an active role in the knowledge-building process. The mCLT is potentially an application for ubiquitous collaborative learning.

STUDY OF NEW AUTOMOTIVE REAR SUSPENSION MECHANISM

2011

The paper presents firstly an introduction discussing: the problem’s statement emphasizing the actual problem of research of passenger car suspension to improve driving comfort and dynamic of the vehicle movement; aspects regarding the studies of car suspension mechanisms; the paper’s aims and objectives showing that a new configuration of suspension mechanism having in structure mobile frame and an actuator offering some important operational advantages is proposed. After this, the innovative concept is presented. The motions of mechanism elements and actuator and kinematic displacements are largely presented. The simulation using modern software (MSC Patran 2007, MD R2 Nastran and MSC ADA…

A Novel Framework of Hybrid Harvesting Mechanisms for Remote Sensing Devices

2022

Sensing networks have recently proven to be useful in a variety of disciplines. The use of mobile sensing robots and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is intended to lessen the burden of sensor node energy consumption. However, conserving energy in the networks remains a major concern. In this work, a design of a hybrid RF-Solar harvesting system to support sensing devices is investigated. The harvesting circuits may collect energy from both solar and radio frequency (RF) resources that are commonly available in ambient environments. This approach creates hybrid harvesting circuits for all elements in the combined sensor networks by combining RF and solar harvester circuits. The RF harvester …

Hybrid Solar-RF Energy Harvesting Mechanisms for Remote Sensing Devices

2022

Recently, sensor networks effectively provide many applications in different fields. The deployment of mobile sensors, unmanned aerial vehicles is to reduce the burden of energy consumption for sensor nodes. However, saving energy in such networks is still a critical issue. This paper investigates the performance of a hybrid RF-Solar harvesting circuit for remote sensing devices. The harvesting circuit can simultaneously harvest power from solar and radio frequency (RF) sources readily available in the surrounding environment. The proposed work builds RF and solar harvester circuits to create hybrid harvesting circuits for all elements in the combined sensing networks. The stand-alone RF ha…

Does diversification pay in the app market? Evidence from Apple's App Store and Google Play

2016

In this paper we address the study of the effects of product line diversification on firm performance in the mobile application market. Specifically, we shed light on whether the distribution platform ecosystem where developers commercialize their apps influence the effect of product line diversification, i.e., diversification across different app categories, on developer sales performance. To these purposes, we compare the sales performance of diversified developers with that of category-specialized developers in the two major app stores (namely, Apple’s App Store and Google Play). Our results show that the diversification strategy has a positive impact on developer sales in Google Play, w…

Offloading through Opportunistic Networks with Dynamic Content Requests

2014

Offloading is gaining momentum as a technique to overcome the cellular capacity crunch due to the surge of mobile data traffic demand. Multiple offloading techniques are currently under investigation, from modifications inside the cellular network architecture, to integration of multiple wireless broadband infrastructures, to exploiting direct communications between mobile devices. In this paper we focus on the latter type of offloading, and specifically on offloading through opportunistic networks. As opposed to most of the literature looking at this type of offloading, in this paper we consider the case where requests for content are non-synchronised, i.e. users request content at random …

Automatic image representation and clustering on mobile devices.

2010

In this paper a novel approach for the automatic representation of pictures on mobile devices is proposed. With the wide diffusion of mobile digital image acquisition devices, the need of managing a large number of digital images is quickly increasing. In fact the storage capacity of such devices allow users to store hundreds or even thousands, of pictures that, without a proper organization, become useless. Users may be interested in using (i.e., browsing, saving, printing and so on) a subset of stored data according to some particular picture properties. A content-based description of each picture is needed to perform on-board image indexing. In our work the images are analyzed and descri…

A Fog-Based Application for Human Activity Recognition Using Personal Smart Devices

2019

The diffusion of heterogeneous smart devices capable of capturing and analysing data about users, and/or the environment, has encouraged the growth of novel sensing methodologies. One of the most attractive scenarios in which such devices, such as smartphones, tablet computers, or activity trackers, can be exploited to infer relevant information is human activity recognition (HAR). Even though some simple HAR techniques can be directly implemented on mobile devices, in some cases, such as when complex activities need to be analysed timely, users’ smart devices can operate as part of a more complex architecture. In this article, we propose a multi-device HAR framework that exploits the fog c…

Human-Human Interaction: Trends and Challenges for Pervasive and Mobile Computing

2012

Human-to-human interaction (HHI) is a challenging new domain where networked information systems and intelligent environments surrounding people converge for the purpose of better satisfaction of users' requirements and anticipation of their needs. Ubiquitous and pervasive computing are currently considered mature domains that implement and employ networked information systems on many important applications. Ambient intelligence involves the deployment of sensors and devices into the environment to
