European National Road Authorities and Circular Economy: An Insight into Their Approaches
2020
The pavement engineering industry, having realized the significance of the impacts that it imposes on the environment through the production, construction and management of its products and assets, has been driven towards a more sustainable and circular way of operating. This has partly been through asphalt recycling, which is an area that many road authorities have prioritized. However, not all the National Road Authorities (NRAs) and/or sector stakeholders seem to be adequately familiar with the Circular Economy (CE) concept. This paper attempts to assist the transition of NRAs to a more circular way of doing business, by analyzing the current situation of CE within national/regional auth…
Conversion as Negotiation. Converts as Actors of Civil Society
2020
This article focuses on the religious movement of the Ahmadiyya and its civil society organization, Humanity First, in West-Africa and in Europe. Particular attention is paid to the place of converts within these two institutions. Conversions to an Islamic minority and the actions of this minority are studied through the prism of social commitment. I examine the intersections between religious values, the ideas of solidarity in the societies under scrutiny and, the kaleidoscopic range of Muslim charities. The paper investigates conversion as negotiation in regard to gender, social mobility, and power. Conversion is approached here as a matter of social relations and not personal belief. I a…
Producing social mobility. Class and Travel in the Romanian Novel 1901-1932
2020
The present article addresses the Romanian novelistic production between 1901 and 1932 in the attempt of identifying a series of patterns regarding the protagonists’ social mobility. Starting with the most mentioned destinations throughout the novels, I analyse how and why the different social classes travel and try to determine the landmarks between which they dispute their physical presence, on the one hand, and their aspirations, on the other. On this basis, the second part of the article conducts a quantitative analysis of the major means of transport in the period – the train, the tramway, the coach/carriage, the automobile, the aeroplane, the ship, and the waggon – and attempts to pin…
Unveiling anion-induced folding in tripodal imidazolium receptors by ion-mobility mass spectrometry.
2021
The anion-induced folding of tripodal imidazolium receptors has been investigated by NMR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization ion mobility mass spectrometry and DFT calculations. Such folding can be switched by anion release upon collision induced dissociation.
Why do Norwegian nurses leave the public health service to practice CAM?
2009
Accepted version of an article published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, 15 (2009), 147-151 This paper explores a number of issues associated with the recent increase in nurses choosing to leave the Norwegian health care system in order to become independent practitioners of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). The paper suggests that in Norway, nurses perceive medical hegemony continues to persist. Nurses perceive restrictions in their ability to develop their professional roles and status. CAM would appear to offer many nurses, the opportunity to develop their clinical skills in an autonomous, egalitarian and more holistic environment.
Architectures and protocols for mobile computing applications: a reconfigurable approach
2004
This work deals with reconfigurable control functions and protocols for supporting mobile computing applications in heterogeneous wireless systems like cellular networks and WLANs. The control functions are implemented in a software module, named Reconfigurable Access module for MObile computiNg applications (RAMON), placed in mobile and/or base stations. RAMON operates on abstract models of the main communication functions of a wireless systems (e.g., transmission over the radio channel, coding end error recovery, capacity sharing and packet scheduling, handover, congestion control, etc.). RAMON algorithms are programmed with reference to the abstract models, independently of specific radi…
Mechanism of self-trapped hole motion in corundum crystals
1993
Abstract Atomistic simulations of the self-trapped hole eauilibrium geometry and migration in a pure corundum crystal have been carried out using the semiempirical method of intermedia te neglect of differential overlap and atom-atom potentials, as implemented in the CASCADE code. The activation energies for three different hole-hopping mechanisms are calculated. It is shown that the 60° reorientations of a self-trapped hole and hopping to the nearest O-atom triangle reauire almost the same activation energy, approximately 0.9 eV, which agrees auite well with the experi-mental value for hole migration of 0.7 eV. A new mechanism of small-polaron motion is suggested.
External knowledge sourcing in different national settings: a comparison of electronics establishments in Britain and France
2004
04001; International audience; In a detailed comparison of matched samples of electronics establishments in Britain and France, this paper finds that the two samples of establishments were operating in distinctively different national labour markets for engineers and scientists, reflecting structural differences in national higher education systems and a far higher level of individual mobility between enterprises in Britain than is found in France. These differences were found to have very little effect on quantitative measures of establishments' external research interactions which tended to reflect other national-institutional differences such as continued government support for public la…
Vers des indicateurs locaux de performance énergétique : les étiquettes énergétiques territoriales. Une première approche à partir de l'estimation de…
2009
Global warming compels to investigate the decrease of green house gas effect emissions and so energy consumption reduction. At local scale, it leads to reach concrete goals regarding energy efficiency, which could be approached through the definition of indicators and guidelines for decision-makers. From the example of the city of Besançon (France), this research aims to define an original indicator, useful for planners. Considering a standardized mobility behaviour of inhabitants, we propose elements of methodology to measure the relative energy consumption of each zone based on their relative distance to the nearest shops, services and employment zones. The results display "zonal energy l…
Organoplatinum(II) Complexes Self-Assemble and Recognize AT-Rich Duplex DNA Sequences
2021
The specific recognition of AT-rich DNA sequences opens up the door to promising diagnostic and/or therapeutic strategies against gene-related diseases. Here, we demonstrate that amphiphilic PtII complexes of the type [Pt(dmba)(N∧N)]NO3 (dmba = N,N-dimethylbenzylamine-κN, κC; N∧N = dpq (3), dppz (4), and dppn (5)) recognize AT-rich oligonucleotides over other types of DNA, RNA, and model proteins. The crystal structure of 4 shows the presence of significant π-stacking interactions and a distorted coordination sphere of the d8 PtII atom. Complex 5, containing the largest π-conjugated ligand, forms supramolecular assemblies at high concentrations under aqueous environment. However, its aggreg…
