Bilevel heat exchanger network synthesis with an interactive multi-objective optimization method
2012
Abstract Heat exchanger network synthesis (HENS) has been an active research area for more than 40 years because well-designed heat exchanger networks enable heat recovery in process industries in an energy- and cost-efficient manner. Due to ever increasing global competition and need to decrease the harmful effects done on the environment, there still is a continuous need to improve the heat exchanger networks and their synthesizing methods. In this work we present a HENS method that combines an interactive multi-objective optimization method with a simultaneous bilevel HENS method, where the bilevel part of the method is based on grouping of process streams and building aggregate streams …
Multi-hop D2D Communications with Network Coding : From A Performance Perspective
2019
Multi-hop device-to-device (D2D) communications play an important role in expanding D2D coverage. In this paper, we study a relay-based and network-coding-assisted (in particular, XOR coding) multi-hop D2D communication system. In the system, toward jointly considering the impact of interference and network traffic conditions on the quality of D2D communications, various channel fading models and traffic models are investigated, and the packet loss probability of D2D links is meticulously computed using these models. With the packet loss probability of D2D links, the general closed-form expressions of end-to-end packet loss probability (E2EPLP) of the system with the presence (or absence) o…
Accelerating the Americanization of Management Education
2015
The Journal of Management Inquiry astutely predicted in 2004 that the Americanization of business education would not just continue but increase. Ten years later, it is arguable that the acceleration of the Americanization of management education has exceeded all expectations. To theoretically build toward understanding how and why the American business education model has been adopted to different extents, this comparative study builds on the institutional logics perspective, arguing that different institutional logics can potentially explain the various forms and patterns of Americanization and how they are manifested in the world’s business schools.
Is there a Nordic model of final disposal of spent nuclear fuel? Governance insights from Finland and Sweden
2017
This paper explores citizen participation in Swedish and Finnish regulatory processes for final disposal of spent nuclear fuel (SNF). Finland and Sweden are considered the most advanced worldwide in term of SNF disposal plans. Our aim is to analyze the institutional waste management frameworks, focusing on the role of civil society organizations (CSOs); how lay-people and civil society organizations have been able to participate and contribute to radioactive waste licensing processes; and the nature of radioactive waste risk debates. We review official documents of the waste companies and nuclear safety authorities, plus information from civil society organizations and laypeople. Our theore…
Does corn market uncertainty impact the US ethanol prices?
2018
The growing interest in biofuel as a green energy source has intensified the linkages between corn and ethanol markets, especially in the United States that represents the largest producing and exporting country for ethanol in the world. In this study, we examine the effect of corn market uncertainty on the price changes of US ethanol applying a set of GARCH-jump models. We find that the US ethanol price changes react positively to the corn market volatility shocks after controlling for the effect of oil price uncertainty. In addition, we document that the impact of corn price volatility on the US ethanol prices appears to be asymmetric. Specifically, only the positive corn market volatilit…
A comparison of the discrete and dimensional models of emotion in music
2010
The primary aim of the present study was to systematically compare perceived emotions in music using two different theoretical frameworks: the discrete emotion model, and the dimensional model of affect. A secondary aim was to introduce a new, improved set of stimuli for the study of music-mediated emotions. A large pilot study established a set of 110 film music excerpts, half were moderately and highly representative examples of five discrete emotions (anger, fear, sadness, happiness and tenderness), and the other half moderate and high examples of the six extremes of three bipolar dimensions (valence, energy arousal and tension arousal). These excerpts were rated in a listening experime…
Corporate business model transformation and inter-organizational cognition: the case of Nokia
2013
This article distinguishes between a firm’s corporate business model and business models of its various business units. Our aim is to provide new insights into how executives’ cognitive processes can influence corporate business model transformation decisions. We focus especially on top managers’ recognition of inter-organizational cognitions, that is, such cognitions about the firm and its businesses that are shared by the top managers and stakeholders of the firm in the industries and communities where it operates. We support our theoretical work with an historical case study of Nokia’s corporate business model transformation between 1990 and 1996, which proved highly successful. We find …

Riconfigurare i territori metroplitani. Forme di urbanizzazione e fenomeni di pressione insediativa sui sistemi di interesse naturale in Sicilia
2018
The consumption of the soil due to urbanization it is a phenomena already for many years under observations, but of which only the scientific environment has noticed the elevated environmental impact progress. From a disciplinary point of view, is possible to identify a line of research focusing on the analysis and identification of new morphologies of urbanization and on the interaction among different settlement patterns coexisting in a specific context. This reading complements with the scientific production about the forms of settlement pressure on environmental systems, producing change and deterioration on natural ecosystems and loss of biodiversity. A necessary reference for this lin…
Intellectual property rights and economic growth
2015
Striving for greater economic growth, requires a great understanding of the underlying factors. One of the factors may be the intellectual property rights and the level of its protection. Whether it is and how does it behave are the questions answered by this thesis. The theoretical framework comes mainly from the Schumpeterian growth model. The empirical methodology uses GMM in order to obtain reliable results. The level of intellectual property rights protection in the country does seem to have a positive effect on the country’s growth rate. Furthermore it seems that the relation is non-linear: The incremental changes are different between low and high starting levels of the IPR protectio…
