Contrasting age-specific recruitment and survival at different spatial scales: A case study with the European storm petrel

2009

Evolutionary studies on optimal decisions or conservation guidelines are often derived by generalising patterns from a single population, while inter-population variability in life-history traits is seldom considered. We investigated here how survival and recruitment probabilities changed with age at different geographical scales using the encounter histories of 5523 European storm petrels from three Mediterranean colonies, and also how our estimates of these parameters might be expected to affect population growth rates using population matrix models. We recorded similar patterns among colonies, but also important biological differences. Local survival, recruitment and breeding success inc…

A measurement-based channel model for vehicular communications in tunnels

2014

Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC), 2014 IEEE, Istanbul, TURQUIE, 06-/04/2014 - 09/04/2014; In this paper, we present a new version of the iterative nonlinear least square approximation (INLSA) algorithm for the design of measurement-based channel simulators. The proposed method aims to match the time-variant impulse response (TVIR) of the simulation model to that of the measured channel. The propagation delays are discerned directly from the measurements, whereas the gains, the Doppler frequencies, and the phases are computed iteratively by minimizing a matching error norm. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method in terms of the approximation of the transfe…

AMUN: An Object Oriented Model For Cooperative Spatial Information Systems

1997

International audience; The diversity of spatial information systems promote the need to integrate heterogeneous spatial or geographic information systems (GIS) in a cooperative environment. We present an on going research project, called ISIS (Interoperable Spatial Information System), which aims to build an environment to support interoperability of GIS by interconnecting spatial data repositories and spatial processing resources. Our solution combines techniques from traditional interoperable information systems, spatial data modeling and distributed object oriented databases. While object oriented data modeling impact has been studied in spatial databases, research in model for distribu…

A spiking network for spatial memory formation: Towards a fly-inspired ellipsoid body model

2013

Neural centers devoted to spatial memory and path integration were largely studied in rats and in different insect species like ants and bees. In this paper a neural-based model for the formation of a spatial working memory is proposed mirroring some peculiarities of the Drosophila central brain and in particular the ellipsoid body. Simulation results are reported opening the way to applications on roving platforms.

CliffoSor: A Parallel Embedded Architecture for Geometric Algebra and Computer Graphics

2006

Geometric object representation and their transformations are the two key aspects in computer graphics applications. Traditionally, compute-intensive matrix calculations are involved to model and render 3D scenery. Geometric algebra (a.k.a. Clifford algebra) is gaining growing attention for its natural way to model geometric facts coupled with its being a powerful analytical tool for symbolic calculations. In this paper, the architecture of CliffoSor (Clifford Processor) is introduced. ClifforSor is an embedded parallel coprocessing core that offers direct hardware support to Clifford algebra operators. A prototype implementation on an FPGA board is detailed. Initial test results show more …

A dynamic business modelling approach to design and experiment new business venture strategies

2018

Abstract Business Modelling has evolved as a key activity to reflect new business venture strategy by framing the way a firm will operate and how it will function in achieving its goals (e.g., profitability, growth, innovation, social impact). However, scholars and practitioners have criticized the adoption of a too static perspective in the design and use of conventional Business Model representations. Such a static perspective prevents nascent entrepreneurs experimenting with their Business Models and, as a result, identifying the most effective strategies, especially in terms of business sustainability and profitability. In this paper, we argue that combining conventional Business Model …

Importance of the Window Function Choice for the Predictive Modelling of Memristors

2021

Window functions are widely employed in memristor models to restrict the changes of the internal state variables to specified intervals. Here, we show that the actual choice of window function is of significant importance for the predictive modelling of memristors. Using a recently formulated theory of memristor attractors, we demonstrate that whether stable fixed points exist depends on the type of window function used in the model. Our main findings are formulated in terms of two memristor attractor theorems, which apply to broad classes of memristor models. As an example of our findings, we predict the existence of stable fixed points in Biolek window function memristors and their absenc…

Incompleteness in Conceptual Data Modelling

2013

Although conceptual data modelers can ”get creative” when designing entities and relationships to meet business requirements, they are highly constrained by the business rules which determine the details of how the entities and relationships combine. Typically, there is a delay in realising which business rules might be relevant and a further delay in obtaining an authoritative statement of these rules. We identify circumstances under which viable database designs can be constructed from conceptual data models which are incomplete in the sense that they lack this “infrastructural” detail normally obtained from the business rules. As such detail becomes available, our approach allows the con…

Pruning Incremental Linear Model Trees with Approximate Lookahead

2014

Incremental linear model trees with approximate lookahead are fast, but produce overly large trees. This is due to non-optimal splitting decisions boosted by a possibly unlimited number of examples obtained from a data source. To keep the processing speed high and the tree complexity low, appropriate incremental pruning techniques are needed. In this paper, we introduce a pruning technique for the class of incremental linear model trees with approximate lookahead on stationary data sources. Experimental results show that the advantage of approximate lookahead in terms of processing speed can be further improved by producing much smaller and consequently more explanatory, less memory consumi…

Cross Correlations in Scaling Analyses of Phase Transitions

2008

Thermal or finite-size scaling analyses of importance sampling Monte Carlo time series in the vicinity of phase transition points often combine different estimates for the same quantity, such as a critical exponent, with the intent to reduce statistical fluctuations. We point out that the origin of such estimates in the same time series results in often pronounced cross-correlations which are usually ignored even in high-precision studies, generically leading to significant underestimation of statistical fluctuations. We suggest to use a simple extension of the conventional analysis taking correlation effects into account, which leads to improved estimators with often substantially reduced …
