Cluster Monte Carlo algorithms

Abstract The Swendsen-Wang and Wolff Monte Carlo algorithms are described in some detail, using the Potts model as an example. Various generalizations are then reviewed and some applications are discussed. Two complete Fortran programs for the algorithms are provided.

Estimating aggregated nutrient fluxes in four Finnish rivers via Gaussian state space models

Reliable estimates of the nutrient fluxes carried by rivers from land-based sources to the sea are needed for efficient abatement of marine eutrophication. Although nutrient concentrations in rivers generally display large temporal variation, sampling and analysis for nutrients, unlike flow measurements, are rarely performed on a daily basis. The infrequent data calls for ways to reliably estimate the nutrient concentrations of the missing days. Dealing with data from a space–time point process, the estimation of the conditional intensity function is a crucial issue even if a complete definition of a parametric model is not available. In particular, in case of exploratory contexts or if we want to assess the adequacy of a specific parametric model, some kind of nonparametric estimation procedure could be useful. The statistical detection of environmental risk factors in public health studies is usually difficult due to the weakness of their effects and their confounding with other covariates. Small area geographical data bring the opportunity of observing health response in a wide variety of exposure values. Monte Carlo study of asymmetric 2D XY model

Employing the Polyakov-Susskind approximation in a field theoretical treatment, the t-J model for strongly correlated electrons in two dimensions has recently been shown to map effectively onto an asymmetric two-dimensional classical XY model. The critical temperature at which charge-spin separation occurs in the t-J model is determined by the location of the phase transitions of this effective model. Here we report results of Monte Carlo simulations which map out the complete phase diagram in the two-dimensional parameter space and also shed some light on the critical behaviour of the transitions.

K-ϵ-L model in turbulent superfluid helium

Abstract We generalize the K − ϵ model of classical turbulence to superfluid helium. In a classical viscous fluid the phenomenological eddy viscosity characterizing the effects of turbulence depends on the turbulent kinetic energy K and the dissipation function ϵ , which are mainly related to the fluctuations of the velocity field and of its gradient. In superfluid helium, instead, we consider the necessary coefficients for describing the effects of classical and quantum turbulence, involving fluctuations of the velocity, the heat flux, and the vortex line density of the quantized vortex lines. Bivariate Distributed Lag Models for the analysis of temperature-by-pollutant interaction effect on mortality.

This paper introduces Bivariate Distributed Lags Models (BDLMs) to investigate synergic effect of temperature and airborne particles on mortality. These models seem particulary attractive since they allow to model interactions between such environmental variables accounting for possible delayed effects. A B-spline framework is used to approximate the coefficient surface of the temperature-by-pollutant interaction and possible alternatives are also discussed. A case study of mortality time-series data in Palermo, Italy, is presented to illustrate the model. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Clusters of effects curves in quantile regression models

In this paper, we propose a new method for finding similarity of effects based on quantile regression models. Clustering of effects curves (CEC) techniques are applied to quantile regression coefficients, which are one-to-one functions of the order of the quantile. We adopt the quantile regression coefficients modeling (QRCM) framework to describe the functional form of the coefficient functions by means of parametric models. The proposed method can be utilized to cluster the effect of covariates with a univariate response variable, or to cluster a multivariate outcome. The detection of clustering structure in a point pattern is one of the main focuses of attention in spatiotemporal data mining. Indeed, statistical tools for clustering detection and identification of individual events belonging to clusters are welcome in epidemiology and seismology.
