Geochemical modeling of mixing between magmatic and hydrothermal gases: the case of Vulcano Island, Italy
1999
Abstract In this study we present a geochemical approach to model the mixing of magmatic and hydrothermal gases. Our model is based on a rigorous formulation of a perfectly dimensioned system of mass and energy balance equations. Inputs of the equation set are the H2O and CO2 content and gas emission temperature at the surface, together with some constraints gained from the chemical–physical features of the hydrothermal system. The output data give the composition of magmatic gas, mixing fractions and temperatures of gas mixtures in the mixing zone. The comparison of the emission temperature of fumarolic gases with their calculated mixing temperatures provides valuable indications on the ex…
Deep structural setting of the North American-Caribbean plate boundary in eastern Guatemala
2009
First simultaneous mercury and major volatiles characterization of atmospheric hydrothermal emissions at the Pisciarelli's fumarolic system (Campi Fl…
2020
Abstract Hydrothermal systems with active surface expressions are important natural source of atmospheric mercury. Here we report on the first simultaneous assessment of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) and major volatiles (H2S and CO2) fluxes from the fumarolic system of Pisciarelli, currently the most active at the Campi Flegrei caldera (CFc), Naples (Italy). This was achieved via a GPS-synchronized Lumex and MultiGAS survey which extends similar investigations reported elsewhere. GEM concentrations measured in the fumarolic emissions were consistently above background air level close to the degassing area (mean ~ 8 ± 3 ng m−3 on average) and ranged up to 12,000 ng m−3. Our data evidenced …
Evolution of CO2, SO2, HCl, and HNO3in the volcanic plumes from Etna
2014
The volcanic plumes from degassing Etna (Italy) were extensively probed with instruments onboard the Deutsches Zentrum fur Luft- und Raumfahrt research aircraft Falcon during the contrail, volcano, and cirrus experiment CONCERT on 29/30 September 2011. Up to 10.4 ppmv SO2 and 0.3 ppmv HCl were detected with the atmospheric chemical ionization mass spectrometer AIMS at 3.1 km altitude and 20 km distance to the summit. HNO3 is the dominant reactive nitrogen component in the plumes. Linking aircraft and ground-based observations by Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory dispersion modeling, we identify two crater plumes with different compositions primarily injected by the Boc…
Response of wood-inhabiting fungal community to fragmentation in a beech forest landscape
2014
Fragmentation of natural habitats has become one of the main causes of the loss of biodiversity. To assess the effects of forest fragmentation on wood-inhabiting fungal community in a beech-dominated landscape, 15 differently shaped beech forest fragments were examined in northern Spain. This work covers all the wood-inhabiting macromycetes, including Basidiomycota and Ascomycota. A modelling approach was used to examine the predictability of the fungal community in a fragmented beech forest landscape. In the beech forest patches, a large proportion of edge, low tree densities and low levels of variety of woody debris caused a decrease of wood-inhabiting fungal richness. The fungal communit…
Seismo-stratigraphic model of “La Bandita” area in the Palermo Plain (Sicily, Italy) through HVSR inversion constrained by stratigraphic data
2018
Ambient noise Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) technique is commonly used approach to obtain 1D models of the shear-wave velocity in the shallow surface of an investigated area. However, obtained models can have a wide margin of uncertainty if inversions have not been appropriately constrained by detailed stratigraphic information. An application of HVSR inversion constrained by lithostratigraphic data is presented in order to verify the effectiveness of this technique for purposes of geological and geophysical reconstruction of a sedimentary basin in a densely urbanized area. This is often the case of seismic microzonation studies, in which almost all the information derives fr…
The assessment of volcanic gas hazard by means of numerical models: An example from Vulcano Island (Sicily)
1999
Volcanic activity can inject large quantities of gases and aerosols into the atmosphere both during and between eruptions, creating a health risk for the local population. The paper describes how the volcanic gas concentration in the air can be computed by a flow model simulating the wind field over a digital terrain model of the volcano coupled with a Lagrangian particle model that uses the known (measured) gas emission rates to simulate gas dispersion. The coupling provides hazard maps for a number of meteorological conditions, introduced as boundary and initial conditions to the wind flow model, and permits the estimation of the risk both for actual and increased emission rates. An appli…
Modeling initial Neolithic dispersal. The first agricultural groups in West Mediterranean
2015
Abstract In previous research, the SE-NW time-trend in the age of the earliest Neolithic sites across Europe has been treated as a signal of a global-scale process that brought farming/herding economies to the continent. Residual variation from this global time-trend is generally treated as ‘noise’. A Complex Adaptive Systems perspective views this empirical record differently. The apparent time-trend is treated as an emergent consequence of the interactions of individuals and groups of different scale. Here, we examine the dynamics of agricultural dispersals, using the rich body evidence available from the Iberian Peninsula as a case study. We integrate two complementary approaches: (1) cr…

2001
A review with 35 references covering molecular modeling in coordination polymerization over homogeneous and heterogeneous Ziegler-Natta catalysts. The study includes supports, cocatalysts, Lewis bases and solvents. Recent progress in elucidating the mechanisrn of elementary polymerization steps is presented against the background of rapidly deveIoping computational methods and available computational power. Theoretical studies on polymerization mcchanisms and structure of active centers are described (egns. 1-4). Authors own calculations are used to compare [MtC14(THF)2] complex-based (Mt = Ti, Hf or Zr) heterogeneous catalysts. The geometrical characteristics of precursors is presented (Ta…
Near-Infrared-Responsive Choline-Calix[4]arene-Gold Nanostructures for Potential Photothermal Cancer Treatment
2022
The development of novel chemical approaches for the fabrication of gold nanostructures with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) falling in the near-infrared (NIR) region is one challenging topic in nanomaterials science. Due to their optical and photothermal properties triggered by light excitation in the therapeutic window (λmax = 650-1300 nm), gold-based nanostructures are appealing candidates in anticancer nanomedicine. Here, we report a novel method to prepare water-dispersible gold nanostructures with NIR-LSPR (λmax = 600-1000 nm) properties. The gold nanostructures were achieved in a single step by an unconventional method using NADH as a reducing agent and an amphiphilic chol…
