The Spatial Overlap of Police Calls Reporting Street-Level and Behind-Closed-Doors Crime: A Bayesian Modeling Approach

2021

Traditionally, intimate-partner violence has been considered a special type of crime that occurs behind closed doors, with different characteristics from street-level crime. The aim of this study is to analyze the spatial overlap of police calls reporting street-level and behind-closed-doors crime. We analyzed geocoded police calls in the 552 census-block groups of the city of Valencia, Spain, related to street-level crime (N = 26,624) and to intimate-partner violence against women (N = 11,673). A Bayesian joint model was run to analyze the spatial overlap. In addition, two Bayesian hierarchical models controlled for different neighborhood characteristics to analyze the relative risks. Resu…

Classical and reverse substituent effects in meta- and para-substituted nitrobenzene derivatives

2017

Electron-accepting properties of the nitro group were studied in a series of meta- and para-X-substituted nitrobenzene derivatives (X = NMe2, NH2, OH, OMe, CH3, H, F, Cl, CF3, CN, CHO, COMe, CONH2, COOH, COCl, NO2, NO). For this purpose Hammett-like approaches were applied based on quantum chemistry modeling; the B3LYP/6-311++ G(d,p) method was used. The substituent effect (SE) was characterized by the mutually interrelated descriptors: the charge of the substituent active region, cSAR(X), and substituent effect stabilization energy, SESE, as well as substituent constants, σ. Classical SE is realized by dependences of the structural parameters of the nitro group (ONO angle and NO bond lengt…

Sulfonamide moiety as "molecular chimera" in the design of new drugs.

2021

Background: The -SO2NH- group is of great significance in modern pharmaceutical use since, in sulfa-drugs, it is possible to introduce easily chemical modifications, and even small changes may lead to an improved version of an already existing drug. Objective: This paper aims to describe updated information in the sulfonamide field with a particular focus on new mechanisms of action, especially if discovered by employing computational approaches. Methods: Research articles that focused on the use of the sulfonamide moiety for the design, synthesis, and in vitro/in vivo tests of various diseases were collected from various search engines like PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and Scop…

DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINABLE METROPOLITAN AREAS USING A MULTI-SCALE DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM

2012

A sustainable and sustaining planning strategy is globally important for metropolitan areas. Sustainable planning addresses the development of strategies to reduce the use of resources, increase economic efficiency and improve integration of social aspects. In contrast, splinter development (e.g. urban sprawl) involves damage to nature and generation of an increasing volume of traffic (these are the main criticisms following a study by Newman and Kenworthy (1989) on the relationship between settlement density and energy consumption). Interestingly, the overly compact city also has this effect as it may generate traffic flows for accessing green and leisure areas, or changes of residence due…

Stratégie d'aménagement pour le développement durable d'aires métropolitaines par un système multi-scalaire d'aide à la décision : l'exemple de Vienne

2012

A sustainable and sustaining planning strategy is globally important for metropolitan areas. Sustainable planning addresses the development of strategies to reduce the use of resources, increase economic efficiency and improve integration of social aspects (e.g. pedestrian-friendly environments, well-balanced public and private transport modes, efficient street networks, land use, movement economy; access for all to jobs, retail, services; healthcare, culture and leisure). In contrast, splinter development (e.g. urban sprawl) involves damage to nature and generation of an increasing volume of traffic (these are the main criticisms following a study by Newman and Kenworthy (1989) on the rela…

A Research Agenda for Evaluating Strength of Internal Preferences and External Influences in Consumer Smartphone Switching

2015

This article proposes a research agenda to study what causes consumers to switch smartphone manufacturer and operating system brands. International consumer survey is planned for data collection and structural equation modeling method will be used to extrapolate whether internal preferences play a larger role than external influences in consumers’ switching behavior. The effects are expected to be moderated by behavioral control, subjective uncertainty and prior switching experience and controlled with a set of constraint variables. As a theoretical contribution, we propose a new theory to evaluate switching primarily through the latent construct of magnitude of switch. Potential practical …

A Repository for Multirelational Dynamic Networks

2012

Nowadays, WWW contains a number of social media sites, which are growing rapidly. One of the main features of social media sites is to allow to its users creation and modification of contents of the site utilizing the offered WWW interfaces. Such contents are referred to as user generated contents and their type varies from site to site. Social media sites can be modeled as constantly evolving multirelational directed graphs. In this paper we discuss persistent data structures for such graphs, and present and analyze queries performed against the structures. We also estimate the space requirements of the proposed data structures, and compare them with the naive "store each complete snapshot…
