Photocatalytic degradation enhancement in pickering emulsions stabilized by solid particles of bare TiO 2

2019

Pickering emulsions provide a new way to enhance the efficiency of photocatalytic degradation of water-insoluble pollutants. Indeed, the semiconductor solid particles dually act as the photocatalyst and stabilizer of the emulsion droplets whose size dramatically affects the photocatalytic reaction. The present work aims at the validation of this concept by using bare TiO 2 without any surface modification. Nanostructured TiO 2 has been prepared by a simple sol-gel process and characterized by X-ray diffraction, specific surface area analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The emulsions were prepared by using 1-methylnaphthalene (1-MN) as a model organic…

Structural and CO [sub] 2 capture properties of ethylenediamine-modified HKUST-1 metal-organic framework

2020

The high structural and compositional flexibility of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) shows their great potential for CO2 capture and utilization in accordance with the environmental guidelines of low-carbon technology developments. HKUST-1 as one of the most intensively studied representatives of MOFs for such purposes excels because of its simplicity of production and high ability to tune its intrinsic properties by various functionalization processes. In the present work, ethylenediamine functionalization was performed for the first time in order to thoroughly investigate the amine sorption sites’ impact on the CO2 capture performance of HKUST-1. The placement of ethylenediamine moieties …

Organic-nanoclay composite materials as removal agents for environmental decontamination

2019

Here we overview the recent advances in the fabrication of sustainable composite nanomaterials with decontamination capacity towards inorganic and organic pollutants. In this regards, we present the development of hybrid systems based on clay nanoparticles with different shapes (such as kaolinite nanosheets and halloysite nanotubes) and organic molecules (biopolymers, surfactants, cucurbituril) as efficient removal agents for both aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. Due to their high specific surface area, clay nanoparticles have been successfully employed as fillers for composite membranes with excellent filtration capacity. The preparation of composite gel beads based on biopolymers (alg…

Silanization as a versatile functionalization method for the synthesis of polymer/magnetite hybrid nanoparticles with controlled structure

2016

We compare the use of different trimethoxysilane compounds for the surface functionalization of magnetite nanoparticles and their subsequent incorporation in hybrid particles formed by in situ polymerization. For the encapsulation of inorganic nanoparticles via miniemulsion polymerization, surface functionalization of the inorganic material is necessary to hydrophobize the otherwise hydrophilic inorganic material and to compatibilize it with the polymer. Hydrophobic magnetite nanoparticles are usually prepared by surface functionalization with oleic acid, which leads to effective hydrophobization, but offers only limited control over the structure of the hybrid particles. As an alternative,…

Mechanical properties of MDCK II cells exposed to gold nanorods

2015

Background: The impact of gold nanoparticles on cell viability has been extensively studied in the past. Size, shape and surface functionalization including opsonization of gold particles ranging from a few nanometers to hundreds of nanometers are among the most crucial parameters that have been focussed on. Cytoxicity of nanomaterial has been assessed by common cytotoxicity assays targeting enzymatic activity such as LDH, MTT and ECIS. So far, however, less attention has been paid to the mechanical parameters of cells exposed to gold particles, which is an important reporter on the cellular response to external stimuli. Results: Mechanical properties of confluent MDCK II cells exposed to go…

Facile hybridization of Ni@Fe2O3 superparticles with functionalized reduced graphene oxide and its application as anode material in lithium-ion batte…

2015

Abstract In our present work we developed a novel graphene wrapping approach of Ni@Fe2O3 superparticles, which can be extended as a concept approach for other nanomaterials as well. It uses sulfonated reduced graphene oxide, but avoids thermal treatments and use of toxic agents like hydrazine for its reduction. The modification of graphene oxide is achieved by the introduction of sulfate groups accompanied with reduction and elimination reactions, due to the treatment with oleum. The successful wrapping of nanoparticles is proven by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The developed composite material shows strongly i…

Controllable coverage of chemically modified graphene sheets with gold nanoparticles by thermal treatment of graphite oxide with N,N-dimethylformamide

2013

Abstract We describe a simple chemical method to reduce and functionalize graphite oxide by reaction with dimethylformamide under controlled heating. Our experiments suggest that the reaction conditions assist the decomposition of the solvent to produce dimethylamine molecules that can react with the oxygen-rich functional groups covering the surface of the exfoliated layers of graphene, therefore generating chemically modified graphene (CMG). These N-functionalities have been next used as anchoring points for the grafting of Au nanoparticles. Given that the functionalization extent can be controlled with the temperature and reaction time, our approach can be considered as a straightforward…

DFT studies of OH-functionalized open-ended zigzag, armchair, and chiral single wall carbon nanotubes

2011

The functionalization of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by attaching various molecules or molecular groups to the exterior walls or tips has attracted much attention, because it offers a possible way to modify their electronic, chemical, optical and mechanical properties. In this contribution the results of DFT studies of pristine and OH-modified open-ended zigzag (9,0), armchair (5,5) and chiral (8,2) nanotubes are reported. The calculations have been performed for partially and fully functionalized at one end model SWCNTs with dangling bonds saturated with hydrogen atoms and a nonadditive dependence of attachment energy on the number of substituents was observed.
