Circulating levels of molecular adhesion correlate with stage of renal disease and C-reactive protein in chronic kidney disease

2007

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) suffer from a series of complications linked to the atherosclerotic process in which the endothelial dysfunction mediated by the activation of some adhesion molecules plays an important role. This study aims to evaluate circulating levels of intercellular adhesion molecules-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecules-1 (VCAM-1) in patients with predialysis CRF, on maintenance hemodialysis (HD) and after kidney transplantation (KTx) and to correlate them with some inflammation and nutritional indexes. METHODS: Thirty two patients with predialysis CRF, 30 on maintenance HD, 36 after KTx and 28 subjects as a control group (C) were inclu…

Beliefs and preferences regarding biological treatments for severe asthma

2020

Background: Severe asthma is a serious condition with a significant burden on patients' morbidity, mortality, and quality of life. Some biological therapies targeting the IgE and interleukin-5 (IL5) mediated pathways are now available. Due to the lack of direct comparison studies, the choice of which medication to use varies. We aimed to explore the beliefs and practices in the use of biological therapies in severe asthma, hypothesizing that differences will occur depending on the prescribers’ specialty and experience. Methods: We conducted an online survey composed of 35 questions in English. The survey was circulated via the INterasma Scientific Network (INESNET) platform as well as throu…

Alkoxysilyl substituted oligo(phenylenevinylene)s: chromophores with reactive side chains

2003

The synthesis and properties of highly luminescent oligo(phenylenevinylene)s (OPV) with curable alkoxysilyl groups are described. Two diethoxymethylsilane moieties are connected directly or through flexible spacers to monodisperse alkoxy-substituted OPVs via hydrosilylation of alkinyl and allyloxy groups, Heck reaction with silylstyrene or condensation of aldehydes with aminopropyl silanes. Hydrolysis of the alkoxysilanes yields silanols condensing to curable three-dimensional networks, thus allowing the transformation of small molecules to transparent and fluorescent films with well-defined chromophores.

Unique Reactivity of Fluorinated Molecules with Transition Metals

2014

Organofluorine and organometallic chemistry by themselves constitute two potent areas in organic synthesis. Thus, the combination of both offers many chemical possibilities and represents a powerful tool for the design and development of new synthetic methodologies leading to diverse molecular structures in an efficient manner. Given the importance of the selective introduction of fluorine atoms into organic molecules and the effectiveness of transition metals in C–C and C–heteroatom bond formation, this review represents an interesting read for this aim.

Clinical manifestations of the anti-IgLON5 disease

2017

Objective:To report the presentation, main syndromes, human leukocyte antigen (HLA) association, and immunoglobulin G (IgG) subclass in the anti-IgLON5 disease: a disorder with parasomnias, sleep apnea, and IgLON5 antibodies. Methods:This was a retrospective clinical analysis of 22 patients. The IgG subclass was determined using reported techniques. Results:Patients' median age was 64 years (range 46–83). Symptoms that led to initial consultation included sleep problems (8 patients; 36%), gait abnormalities (8; 36%), bulbar dysfunction (3; 14%), chorea (2; 9%), and cognitive decline (1; 5%). By the time of diagnosis of the disorder, 4 syndromes were identified: (1) a sleep disorder with paras…

Water‐Soluble Heteronuclear [NaCu II 6 ] Metallomacrocyclic Sandwich Complexes: Synthesis, Structure, Properties and In Vitro Biological Studies

2014

The water-soluble heteronuclear metallomacrocyclic sandwich clusters [NaCu6(hpnbpda)3(OH)3(OH2)3](NO3)·4H2O (1), [NaCu6(hpnbpda)3(OH)3(OH2)3](ClO4) (2), and [NaCu6(hpnbpda)3(OH)3(OH2)3](PF6) (3) [H3hpnbpda = N,N′-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-2-hydroxy-1,3-propanediamine-N,N′-diacetic acid] have been synthesized in methanol at room temperature and fully characterized using several analytical techniques including single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The molecular architecture of complex 1 is built from the template assembly of three dinuclear [Cu2(hpnbpda)]+ fragments through their weak oxophillic interactions with a central sodium(I) cation. A close analysis of the single-crystal X-ray structure reveal…

Naturforsch. 2009, 64b, 847 – 850; received April 8, 2009 Hydroxycycloalkanones 1 of medium ring size (8 – 10) exist in a transannular tautomeric equilibrium with the corresponding oxabicycloalkan-1-ols 2, which represent hemiacetals. Normally, the bicyclic structures 2 predominate in solution although their portion decreases with increasing solvent polarity. Effect of Size of Solvent Molecule on the Adsorption of p- and o-Xylene on ZSM-5 Type Zeolites and Mechanism of Adsorption

1994

Summary The adsorption isotherms of p- and o-xylene have been studied on MFI-type zeolites of different alumina to silica ratios from solvents of different molecular sizes. The adsorption is mainly controlled by the shape and size of the pore opening relative to the size and shape of the sorbate and the solvent molecules. Aluminum containing zeolites formed colored π-complexes with p-xylene.

Psoriatic arthritis and COVID ‐19 pandemic: Consequences in medical treatment?

2020

The COVID‐19 pandemic has a strong negative impact on human society world‐wide. Patients with immune‐mediated disease may be prone to an increased risk of infection and/ or more severe course. We review the available data for patients with psoriatic arthritis (PSA) and systemic treatments. Current treatment options are summarized. Based upon the experience with COVID‐19 the following problems are addressed: (a) Can systemic treatment reduce comorbidities of PsA that are also comorbidities for COVID‐19? Does systemic medical treatment pose an increased risk of infection with SARS‐CoV‐2? Does systemic drug therapy have an impact on the risk of pulmonary fibrosis ‐ a factor with strong negativ…

Identification of Three-Way DNA Junction Ligands through Screening of Chemical Libraries and Validation by Complementary in Vitro Assays

2019

International audience; The human genome is replete with repetitive DNA sequences that can fold into thermodynamically stable secondary structures such as hairpins and quadruplexes. Cellular enzymes exist to cope with these structures whose stable accumulation would result in DNA damage through interference with DNA transactions such as transcription and replication. Therefore, the chemical stabilization of secondary DNA structures offers an attractive way to foster DNA transaction-associated damages to trigger cell death in proliferating cancer cells. While much emphasis has been recently given to DNA quadruplexes, we focused here on three-way DNA junctions (TWJ) and report on a strategy t…
