Sabratha. A guide to the studies and investigations of the past 50 years
2017
This volume, not a simple archaeological guide, adds to the description of the monuments and museums of Sabratha also some reflections on general themes as sculpture, urban developement, religious architecture, civic and domestic buildings, paintings and mosaics of the punico-hellenistic, Roman and Christian Sabratha. It also gives account of the researches of the Archaeological Mission of the Palermo University, directed by the late Professor Nicola Bonacasa, and it includes the contribution of external scholars, which very recently published some monuments of great interest.
La città e il suo porto
2017
The City and its Port
2017
Within the volume “Sabratha. A guide to the studies and investigations of the past 50 years”, Chapter on: “The city and the port”, in the sections on “Urban housing and industrial establishments” and “Mosaics and wall paintings of the houses” (A. Mandruzzato), a reconstruction of the appearance of the city during the Roman age and a description of the wall paintings and mosaic pavements of some houses, located in different areas of the city, are proposed.
Madonie, L'arte e la storia
2021
The sequencing of the complete genome of a Tomato black ring virus (TBRV) and of the RNA2 of three Grapevine chrome mosaic virus (GCMV) isolates from…
2014
The complete genome of a Tomato black ring virus isolate (TBRV-Mirs) (RNA1, 7,366 nt and RNA2, 4,640 nt) and the RNA2 sequences (4,437; 4,445; and 4,442 nts) of three Grapevine chrome mosaic virus isolates (GCMV-H6, -H15, and -H27) were determined. All RNAs contained a single open reading frame encoding polyproteins of 254 kDa (p1) and 149 kDa (p2) for TBRV-Mirs RNA1 and RNA2, respectively, and 146 kDa for GCMV RNA2. p1 of TBRV-Mirs showed the highest identity with TBRV-MJ (94 %), Beet ringspot virus (BRSV, 82 %), and Grapevine Anatolian ringspot virus (GARSV, 66 %), while p2 showed the highest identity with TBRV isolates MJ (89 %) and ED (85 %), followed by BRSV (65 %), GCMV (58 %), and GA…
Simultaneous detection of the seven main tomato-infecting RNA viruses by two multiplex reverse transcription polymerase chain reactions
2012
Cucumber mosaic virus, Tomato spotted wilt virus, Tomato mosaic virus, Tomato chlorosis virus, Pepino mosaic virus, Torrado tomato virus and Tomato infectious chlorosis virus cause serious damage and significant economic losses in tomato crops worldwide. The early detection of these pathogens is essential for preventing the viruses from spreading and improving their control. In this study, a procedure based on two multiplex RT-PCRs was developed for the sensitive and reliable detection of these seven viruses. Serial dilutions of positive controls were analysed by this methodology, and the results were compared with those obtained by ELISA and singleplex versions of RT-PCR. The multiplex and…
From the management plan to a protection management system of mosaic decorations in ‘Arab-Norman Palermo and the cathedral churches of Cefalù and Mon…
2014
The rich Arab - Norman architectural heritage of Palermo is, in its manifestation of different forms of art, an exceptional and unique result of a cultural syncretism. It describes the city as a privileged gathering place of the West Christian culture with the Eastern Byzantine Empire and the Islamic world in the twelfth century. The serial nomination of the ‘Arabic - Norman itinerary of Palermo’ includes monuments holding inside a unique mosaic wall and pavement decoration as one of the major artistic features of its outstanding value. Starting from the ‘Management Plan’ presented in December 2011 for the nomination in the World Heritage List of UNESCO, the present contribution reflects ab…
Mortars and Plasters under the Mosaics and the Wall Paintings of the Roman Villa at Piazza Armerina, Sicily
2010
The Roman Villa at Piazza Armerina in Sicily, built in many successive steps over the 2nd and 3rd centuries A.D., is renowned all over the world for both the wealth and the refinement of its mosaic floors. In February 2007 the Regional Government of Sicily started a restoration project of the whole archaeological site. The systematic survey and study of all decorative elements highlighted the value of wall paintings, which until then were almost unknown except for casual approaches to specific problems of conservation, carried on without any relation to the far and away famous mosaics. This paper shows the results of a physical chemical investigation of the mortars used for both floors and …
Super-resolution-based magnification of endothelium cells from biomicroscope videos of the cornea
2018
We present a practical, robust, and effective pipeline to compute a high-resolution (HR) image of the corneal endothelium starting from a low-resolution (LR) video sequence obtained with a general purpose slit lamp biomicroscope. An image quality typical of dedicated and more expensive confocal microscopes is achieved via software magnification by exploiting information redundancy in the video sequence. In particular, the HR image is generated from the best LR frames, obtained by identifying the most suitable endothelium video subsequence using a support vector machine-based learning approach, followed by a robust graph-based frame registration. Results on long, real sequences show that the…
Dealing with reconstruction problems: two cases study
Reconstruction problems are always included in a computer vision system as one of the key step toward the recognition of a scene. There are hierarchies of reconstruction that go from pixels to regions in the lower level, and from patches to objects in higher steps. The success of the reconstruction phase de-pends on several factors: the selection of "suitable" features, the matching function, the linking strategy. I this paper we show some of problems and solutions in two different contexts: the 3D reconstruction from cloud of points representing fragments of archeological finding, and the mosaicing from sea bed video frames. Preliminary results show that in both cases the accuracy is satis…
