High performance of intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion MRI in detecting viral hepatitis-b induced liver fibrosis.

2019

Background: Recently a small cohort study demonstrated that intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) diffusion MRI can detect early stage liver fibrosis. Using modified IVIM data acquisition parameters, the current study aims to confirm this finding. Methods: Twenty-six healthy volunteers, three patients of chronic viral hepatitis-b but without fibrosis and one mild liver steatosis subject, and 12 viral hepatitis-b patients with fibrosis (stage 1–2=7, stage 3–4=5) were included in this study. With a 1.5-T MR scanner and respiration-gating, IVIM diffusion imaging was acquired using a single-shot echo-planar sequence with a b -value series of 2, 0, 1, 15, 20, 30, 45, 50, 60, 80, 100, 200, 300, 600…

The ionic liquid effect on the Boulton-Katritzky reaction: a comparison between substrates of different structure

2015

The mononuclear rearrangement of heterocycles, also called Boulton–Katritzky reaction, was studied in ionic liquid solution using N-(5-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-3-yl)-N′-(4-nitrophenyl)-formamidine as substrate. The investigation was carried out using piperidine as basic catalyst and several ionic liquids differing in both cation and anion structure. Kinetic data collected were compared with the ones previously reported using (Z)-phenylhydrazone of 3-benzoyl-5-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole to have information about the effect due to the different structure of the alkyl chain borne on the substrate. Furthermore, data were analysed on the grounds of polarity, Kamlet–Taft solvent parameters, but taking…

Twin studies on the association of physical activity with cognitive and cerebral outcomes

2020

Regular physical activity (PA) offers positive effects on the human body. However, the effects of PA on cognition and in the brain are less clear. In this paper, we narratively review the relationship of PA with cognition and dementia, first from general perspective and then through genetically informed studies on the topic. Then we move on to imaging studies on exercise and brain anatomy first by presenting an overall picture of the topic and then discussing brain imaging studies addressing PA and brain structure in twins in more detailed way. Regarding PA and cognition or dementia, genetically informed studies are uncommon, even though the relationship between PA and cognitive ageing has …

Effects of a progressive aquatic resistance exercise program on the biomechanical composition and morphology of cartilage in women with mild knee ost…

2013

Background. Symptoms associated with osteoarthritis of the knee result in decreased function, loss of working capacity and extensive social and medical costs. There is a need to investigate and develop effective interventions to minimise the impact of and even prevent the progression of osteoarthritis. Aquatic exercise has been shown to be effective at reducing the impact of osteoarthritis. The purpose of this article is to describe the rationale, design and intervention of a study investigating the effect of an aquatic resistance exercise intervention on cartilage in postmenopausal women with mild knee osteoarthritis. Methods. A minimum of 80 volunteers who meet the inclusion criteria will…

Trans-cranial Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused UltraSound (tcMRgFUS) system integrated with a 1.5T: an SNR study on DQA phantoms

2018

Background: In recent years transcranial Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery (tcMRgFUS) treatments have been performed only using 3T units. Since following some internal analysis, planning images obtained using a 1.5T MRI’s body RF coil (as usually done with 3T systems) showed generally reasonable quality in terms of anatomy visualization and SNR but thermal images noise was above acceptable standard for treatments, a dedicated 2-channels head coil was developed (InSightec Ltd.) to ensure an adequate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Hence, we present the imaging protocol and the technological methods successfully used with the world-first installation of a certified tcMRgFUS sy…

Molecular Approaches Fighting Nonsense

2021

Nonsense mutations are the result of single nucleotide substitutions in the DNA that change a sense codon (coding for an amino acid) to a nonsense or premature termination codon (PTC) within the coding region of the mRNA [...]
