Letter-case information and the identification of brand names.
2014
A central tenet of most current models of visual-word recognition is that lexical units are activated on the basis of case-invariant abstract letter representations. Here, we examined this assumption by using a unique type of words: brand names. The rationale of the experiments is that brand names are archetypically printed either in lowercase (e.g., adidas) or uppercase (e.g., IKEA). This allows us to present the brand names in their standard or non-standard case configuration (e.g., adidas, IKEA vs. ADIDAS, ikea, respectively). We conducted two experiments with a brand-decision task (‘is it a brand name?’): a single-presentation experiment and a masked priming experiment. Results in the s…

Aspilota-group (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Alysiinae) diversity in Mediterranean Natural Parks of Spain
2014
This work analyses the biodiversity of the Aspilota-group (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Alysiinae) in three Mediterranean Natural parks: Natural Park of La Font Roja, Natural Park of Las Lagunas de la Mata-Torrevieja and Natural Park of La Tinença de Benifassà. Samples were carried out from April 2004 to December 2007. In total, 822 specimens, belonging to 52 species, were collected. Alpha, beta and gamma diversities were analysed, and the Tinença Park was proven to have higher diversity than the Font Roja and Torrevieja. Also, the structure of the Aspilota-group community was analysed.
A secret sharing scheme for anonymous DNS queries
2013
Since its adoption in the early 90's, several privacy concerns have emerged about the Domain Name System (DNS). By collecting the DNS queries performed by each user, it is possible to characterize habits, interests and other sensitive data of the users. Usually, users resolve their {\em url} requests by querying the DSN server belonging to their Internet Service Provider (ISP) and therefore they assume they can trust it. However, different DNS servers can be used, by revealing sensitive data to a partially untrusted entity that can collect and sell this data for several purposes (target advertising, user profiling, etc.). In this paper we address the possibility to integrate tools in the cu…

Precious stones and ‘wondrous’ minerals in Old High German glosses
2018
This essay will focus on the names of precious stones and minerals which were known and praised for their extraordinary properties in Old High German glosses and glossaries. The research aims to shed light on the circulation of stone lore in medieval Germany, and the strategies employed by the glossators when approaching this peculiar lexical field. In a number of cases, the interpretamentum takes the form of an explanatory gloss, providing a short description of the stone, which can include details on its colour, shape and physical properties. The features of the glosses under examination will hopefully yield relevant data on the knowledge of the precious stones and their physical appearan…
Straßennamen als Spiegelbild der Geschichte: Zu den Veränderungen im Bereich der Straßennamen in Oppeln von den Anfängen bis zum Zweiten Weltkrieg
2012
This article examines changes to street names in the city of Oppeln before the transformation to Polish names in 1945. The research is based on a corpus comprising a complete official register of streets and squares in Oppeln/Opole from the beginnings of the town’s history to 2010. The author focuses on the changes in the use of language over the centuries, the form of the hodonyms (on the morphosyntactic level), and the motives for the changes in individual street names.
"Dis poem shall call names names": Naming in reggae culture, the example of dub poetry
2013
International audience; The question of names and naming emerged as a crucial concern in the cultures of the African diaspora as a way to resist the anonymity and loss of identity imposed upon slaves. Through examples taken from reggae culture and the subgenre known as dub poetry, this paper looks at how names imply a political and poetic use of language in black Atlantic cultures.
On the soft excess in the x-ray spectrum of circinus X-1: Revisitation of the distance to circinus X-1
2005
We report on a 300 ks BeppoSAX (0.12-200 keV) observation of Circinus X-1 (Cir X-1) at phases between 0.62 and 0.84 and on a 90 ks BeppoSAX observation of Cir X-1 at phases 0.11-0.16. Using the canonical model adopted until now to fit the energy spectrum of this source, large residuals appear below 1 keV. These are well fitted using an equivalent hydrogen column of 0.66¿1022 cm-2, adding absorption edges of O VII, O VIII, and Ne IX in the spectra extracted from the observation at phases 0.62-0.84 and adding absorption edges of O VII, O VIII, Mg XI, and Mg XII and absorption lines of O VIII and Mg XII in the spectra extracted from the observation at phases 0.11-0.16. During the observation a…
