Influence of low amounts of nanostructured silica and calcium carbonate fillers on the large-area dielectric breakdown performance of bi-axially orie…

2014

Influence of low amounts (1.0-2.0wt-%) of nanostructured silica and calcium carbonate fillers on the large area dielectric breakdown performance of bi-axially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) is analyzed. A multi-breakdown measurement method based on the self-healing breakdown capability of metallized film is utilized for the breakdown characterization in order to cover relatively large total film areas, thus leading to results of higher relevance from the practical point-of-view. The dispersion and distribution qualities of filler particles at the nanoscale are evaluated with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging. Weibull statistical analysis suggests that the breakdown distribution …

The role of filler type in the photo-oxidation behaviour of micro- and nano-filled polypropylene

2011

The rising interest in polymer nanocomposites leads also to an increasing concern for their photo-oxidation resistance. The main properties and photo-oxidation behaviour of polypropylene-based microcomposites and nanocomposites were investigated. The results show that the use of nanosized calcium carbonate may lead to a higher photo-oxidation rate than that of pristine polypropylene, in a way that is comparable to organo-modified nanoclays. It is also observed that nanosized calcium carbonate causes higher photodegradation rates than microsized calcium carbonate. The main reasons for the increased photo-oxidation rates when using organo-modified nanoclays include the presence of iron ions, …

Silver nanoparticles stabilized by a polyaminocyclodextrin as catalysts for the reduction of nitroaromatic compounds

2015

Abstract Silver nanoparticles stabilized by means of poly -(6- N , N -dimethyl-propylenediamino)-(6-deoxy)-β-cyclodextrin were synthesized, characterized by different techniques (UV–vis spectroscopy, Dynamic Light Scattering, High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy, Fourier-transform IR Spectroscopy) and used as catalysts for the reduction of various nitrobenzene derivatives with sodium borohydride. The nanocomposites obtained appear to have an organized structure, with a metal core surrounded by a layer-structured coating shell. Kinetic data, rationalized in terms of a modified Langmuir–Hinshelwood model, evidenced a non-linear dependence of the reaction rate on the concentration …

Influence of the e-beam irradiation and photo-oxidation aging on the structure and properties of LDPE-OMMT nanocomposite films

2012

Abstract In this paper two systems, polyethylene (LDPE) and polyethylene/commercial organo-modified montmorillonite (LDPE/OMMT) nanocomposite, were subjected to e-beam irradiation at different doses and both the molecular modifications and mechanical properties have been investigated through solubility, FT-IR, calorimetric and tensile tests. Moreover, in some of the irradiated systems photo-oxidation aging was performed and its effects were studied. The results show an enhancement with irradiation of the positive effect of the nano-filler loading, related to the increase of the mechanical properties, due to the increase of the nano-filler polymer interaction. Nevertheless calorimetric and F…

Radiation-Engineering of All Plastic Nanocomposite Films

2015

In recent years, polymer nanocomposites have fascinated scientists, engineers and industrialists on the premise that the creation of new and more performing polymeric materials is possible by the combination of different building blocks with controlled dimensions at the nanoscale. Unfortunately, uniform dispersion of the hetero-phase domains within the plastic matrix or on its surface often fails due to the unfavorable thermodynamics, thus resulting in migration and irreversible aggregation phenomena. In-situ generation of a dispersed hetero-phase within the same polymer matrix or in its precursors increases the chances of achieving a better control of morphology by eliminating the often cr…

A chemical and electrochemical multivalent memory made from FeNi3-graphene nanocomposites

2014

FeNi3-graphene nanocomposites present in acetonitrile solutions a redox couple with an electrochemical hysteresis of 2.4 V between the oxidation and the reduction maxima. In view of the high energy required for the reverse transitions, they are here proposed as chemical multilevel memories: permanent, after drying, or erasable in electrolytes, respectively. Keywords: FeNi3-graphene nanocomposites, Voltammetry, Coulovoltammetry, Redox couple, Redox hysteresis

A self-sterilizing fluorescent Nanocomposite as versatile material with broad-spectrum Antibiofilm features

2020

Abstract Hematogenous spread of infections from colonized central intravenous catheters or central lines is a long-recognized problem with infection rates of 2 and 6.8 per 1000 days, respectively. Besides, removal of severe microbial colonization of implanted biomaterials is still a challenge and usually requires invasive operations. Hence, on demand self-sterilizing materials are required to avoid explant of colonized biomaterials and improve patient compliance. Moreover, photoluminescence is needed to make trackable biomaterials, which can be easily monitored upon implanting them in the body. Here, we propose the incorporation of near infrared (NIR) sensitive red-emitting carbon nanodot (…

Solution-Processed Ni-Based Nanocomposite Electrocatalysts: An Approach to Highly Efficient Electrochemical Water Splitting

2021

In this study, we report an up-scalable and low-cost solution-processed method to in situ synthesize an earth-abundant non-stoichiometric NiOx-based electrocatalytic film for water oxidation. The catalytic activity was found to be inversely proportional to the baking temperature, which varied from 50 to 500 °C. We found the formation of a hybrid nanocomposite thin film of NiOx nanocrystals (<2 nm size) inside an acetate-based organic matrix at low temperatures (<200 °C). The defective and short-range structural order of the NiOx-based nanocomposite electrocatalysts, compatible with lattice stress, low electrical conductivity, and high density of catalytically active surface species, and hig…

Printable Thermo- and Photo-stable Poly(D,L-lactide)/Carbon Nanodots Nanocomposites via Heterophase Melt-Extrusion Transesterification

2022

We propose for the first time an one-pot synthesis of carbon nanodots-poly(D,L-lactide) (CDs-PLA) nanocomposites, obtained by a simple reactive melt-extrusion process involving polar surface groups of multicolor CDs and ester bonds of PLA chains. Apart from providing an excellent method to produce polyester-coated CDs, our protocol allows obtaining perfect PLA@CDs blends giving rise to homogeneous extruded PLA@CDs filaments (ePLA@CDs) suitable for 3D printing applications (e.g., additive manufacturing for biomaterials and biodegradable encoded polymer ink technology). We demonstrate that ePLA@CDs filaments can be used to build a huge range of fluorescent objects with increasing architectura…
