Photoluminescent hybrid nanomaterials from modified halloysite nanotubes

2018

The synthesis of photoluminescent nanomaterials based on halloysite nanotubes is described. The obtained hybrid was characterized by means of TGA, FT-IR, DLS and XPS measurements; in addition its morphology was imaged by TEM and HR-TEM. The HNT hybrid also exhibited photoluminescent properties, both in solution and in the solid state, and white-light emission (0.24, 0.36; CIE coordinates) was observed. This work could be pioneering as a new strategy for manufacturing both LEDs and fluorescent tags based on HNT nanomaterials. © 2018 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Disentangling size effects and spectral inhomogeneity in carbon nanodots by ultrafast dynamical hole-burning.

2018

Carbon nanodots (CDs) are a novel family of nanomaterials exhibiting unique optical properties. In particular, their bright and tunable fluorescence redefines the paradigm of carbon as a "black" material and is considered very appealing for many applications. While the field keeps growing, understanding CDs fundamental properties and relating them to their variable structures becomes more and more critical. Two crucial problems concern the effect of size on the electronic structure of CDs, and to what extent their optical properties are influenced by structural disorder. Furthermore, it remains largely unclear whether traditional concepts borrowed from the photo-physics of semiconductor qua…

Solvatochromism Unravels the Emission Mechanism of Carbon Nanodots

2016

High quantum yield, photoluminescence tunability, and sensitivity to the environment are hallmarks that make carbon nanodots interesting for fundamental research and applications. Yet, the underlying electronic transitions behind their bright photoluminescence are strongly debated. Despite carbon-dot interactions with their environment should provide valuable insight into the emitting transitions, they have hardly been studied. Here, we investigate these interactions in a wide range of solvents to elucidate the nature of the electronic transitions. We find remarkable and systematic dependence of the emission energy and kinetics on the characteristics of the solvent, with strong response of …

Self-Cleaning ZnO Nanosheets for Piezoelectric Sensors

2022

The design of wearable sensors coupling versatile analytical detection to self-cleaning is a highly desired combination, tackling the need of smart devices in response to the recent virus pandemics. To this aim, this work shows ZnO nanostructures obtained by a mild wet-chemistry approach onto ITO/PET flexible supports, resulting in wearable piezoelectric sensors exhibiting photocatalytic activity. ITO surfaces are treated with 0.5 mM KMnO4 aqueous solution (20 minutes, 90°C); ZnO growth is subsequently carried out by a previously shown wet-chemistry method [1]. SEM analysis shows the presence of a good surface coverage of ZnO nanosheets (NSs) (about 1.5 NSs/μm2) in the case of treated ITO, …

Magnetic hybrid nanomaterials for the photodegradation of microcontaminats in aqueous environment

2018

Bio-based substances (BBS) isolated from urban biowaste have been employed to prepare hybrid magnetic nanomaterials with iron oxides. Such materials have been tested, in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, for the light induced photodegradation of four microcontaminants (MCs) in aqueous environment: Carbamazepine (C, an anticonvulsant and analgesic drug), Flumequine (F, an antibiotic), Ibuprofen (I, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug), and Sulfamethoxazole (S, an antibiotic). Preliminary photodegradation experiments were carried out at lab-scale in a solar simulator, whereas optimized experiments were carried out in a pilot plant under natural solar radiation. The MCs complete abatement …

Fluorescence of carbon dots embedded in a SiO2 host matrix

2014

Carbon dots (CD) are an emerging class of recently discovered carbonaceous nanomaterials, which have attracted a large interest because of their bright and characteristically “tunable” fluorescence, and their potential for suggestive applications. Despite quite an intense research, the fundamental properties of these systems are poorly understood and still lively debated. Here we report on a series of experiments on N-doped CDs prepared by thermal decomposition of citric acid and urea. We studied these CDs by steady-state and nanosecond time-resolved photoluminescence, optical absorption, infrared absorption and atomic force microscopy. CDs (3 nanometers-sized) are found to emit two co-exis…

Physical and antibacterial properties of PLA electrospun mats loaded with carvacrol and nisin

2022

Functional, biopolymeric electrospun structures for the controlled release of antimicrobial agents are gaining in-creasing interest in food packaging applications. In this study, the physical and antibacterial performances of ternary systems composed of polylactic acid (PLA) electrospun mats loaded with 20 wt% of different relative amounts of carvacrol (CRV) and a commercial nisin formulation (Nis) were assessed. Scanning electron micrographs displayed micro-scaled fibers with different diameter size distributions depending on the relative concentrations of the additives. The PLA/CRV/Nis membranes??? wettability was affected by the relative amount of CRV and Nis loaded, switching from hydro…

Nanostructured Based Electrochemical Sensors.

2019

In this work, we present some results concerning the electrochemical behavior of nanostructured-based electrochemical sensors. In particular, the attention has been focused on Pd and Cu nanowires for detection of hydrogen peroxide and NiO thin film or Ni@NiO core–shell nanowires for detection of mercury ions. Ordered array of Pd and Cu nanowires was obtained through displacement deposition reaction in a commercial polycarbonate membrane acting as a template. The method leads to stable nanostructured electrodes of Pd and Cu with high surface area. For the detection of mercury ions, we have fabricated a Ni/NiO electrochemical sensor, obtained by mild thermal oxidation of Ni-foil. Some results…

Coupling colloidal chemistry with coordination chemistry: Design of hybrid nanomaterials by the assembly of plasmonic nanoparticles and functional co…

2021

Nanotechnology involves the design, characterization, production and application of structures, devices and systems by the control of the shape and size at the nanometer scale involving different fields. In the last decade, nanotechnology development has boosted the interest in hybrid nanomaterials. These materials are a complimenting combination of two (or more) nanoparticles (NPs) with enhanced performance characteristics that offer exciting opportunities. It allows the possibility of integrating materials with different physical and chemical properties to widen the range of practical applications. In this context, Au NPs have recently attracted a lot of attention due to the great opportu…
