Speech-input multi-target machine translation

2007

In order to simultaneously translate speech into multiple languages an extension of stochastic finite-state transducers is proposed. In this approach the speech translation model consists of a single network where acoustic models (in the input) and the multilingual model (in the output) are embedded. The multi-target model has been evaluated in a practical situation, and the results have been compared with those obtained using several mono-target models. Experimental results show that the multi-target one requires less amount of memory. In addition, a single decoding is enough to get the speech translated into multiple languages.

Existence and uniqueness of nontrivial collocation solutions of implicitly linear homogeneous Volterra integral equations

We analyze collocation methods for nonlinear homogeneous Volterra-Hammerstein integral equations with non-Lipschitz nonlinearity. We present different kinds of existence and uniqueness of nontrivial collocation solutions and we give conditions for such existence and uniqueness in some cases. Finally we illustrate these methods with an example of a collocation problem, and we give some examples of collocation problems that do not fit in the cases studied previously.

Neutral baryonic systems with strangeness

We review the status as regards the existence of three- and four-body bound states made of neutrons and $\Lambda$ hyperons. For interesting cases, the coupling to neutral baryonic systems made of charged particles of different strangeness has been addressed. There are strong arguments showing that the $\Lambda nn$ system has no bound states. $\Lambda\Lambda nn$ strong stable states are not favored by our current knowledge of the strangeness $-1$ and $-2$ baryon-baryon interactions. However, a possible $\Xi^- t$ quasibound state decaying to $\Lambda\Lambda nn$ might exist in nature. Similarly, there is a broad agreement about the nonexistence of $\Lambda\Lambda n$ bound states. The complexity of graph languages generated by hyperedge replacement

Although in many ways, hyperedge replacement graph grammars (HRGs) are, among all graph generating mechanisms, what context-free Chomsky grammars are in the realm of string rewriting, their parsing problem is known to be, in general, NP-complete. In this paper, the main difficulty in HRG parsing is analysed and some conditions on either grammar or input graphs are developed under which parsing can be done in polynomial time. For some of the cases, the parsing problem is shown to be log-space reducible to context-free string parsing.

Towards an understanding of discrete ambiguities in truncated partial wave analyses

It is well known that the observables in a single-channel scattering problem remain invariant once the amplitude is multiplied by an overall energy- and angle-dependent phase. This invariance is called the continuum ambiguity and acts on the infinite partial wave set. It has also long been known that, in the case of a truncated partial wave set, another invariance exists, originating from the replacement of the roots of partial wave amplitudes with their complex conjugate values. This discrete ambiguity is also known as the Omelaenko-Gersten-type ambiguity. Investigation of the elastic and inelastic scattering of He-3 from Be-9 in the energy range 30-60 MeV

We have measured the differential cross-sections for the elastic as well as inelastic scattering populating the 2.43[Formula: see text]MeV [Formula: see text] excited state in [Formula: see text] using [Formula: see text] beams at energies of 30, 40 and 47[Formula: see text]MeV on a [Formula: see text] target. The experimental results for the elastic scattering were analyzed within the framework of the optical model using the Woods–Saxon and double-folding potentials. The theoretical calculations for the concerned excited states were performed using the coupled-channel method. The optimal deformation parameters for the excited states of [Formula: see text] nucleus were extracted.
