A neural network clustering algorithm for the ATLAS silicon pixel detector
2014
A novel technique to identify and split clusters created by multiple charged particles in the ATLAS pixel detector using a set of artificial neural networks is presented. Such merged clusters are a common feature of tracks originating from highly energetic objects, such as jets. Neural networks are trained using Monte Carlo samples produced with a detailed detector simulation. This technique replaces the former clustering approach based on a connected component analysis and charge interpolation. The performance of the neural network splitting technique is quantified using data from proton-proton collisions at the LHC collected by the ATLAS detector in 2011 and from Monte Carlo simulations. …
Population structure and reticulate evolution of Saccharomyces eubayanus and its lager-brewing hybrids
2014
Reticulate evolution can be a major driver of diversification into new niches, especially in disturbed habitats and at the edges of ranges. Industrial fermentation strains of yeast provide a window into these processes, but progress has been hampered by a limited understanding of the natural diversity and distribution of Saccharomyces species and populations. For example, lager beer is brewed with Saccharomyces pastorianus, an alloploid hybrid of S. cerevisiae and S. eubayanus, a species only recently discovered in Patagonia, Argentina. Here, we report that genetically diverse strains of S. eubayanus are readily isolated from Patagonia, demonstrating that the species is well established the…
El patrimonio del comercio valenciano del frío
2004
Schelling-Voter Model: An Application to Language Competition
2013
In this work we analyze the language competition problem by using an interacting agent-based model which interpolates the classical Schelling and Voter models. Briefly, an agent may change its place of residence or his language when he is surrounded by more individuals of the other kind than the ones he can tolerate. We analyze this dynamic process in terms of the free space to move in, the pressure to change the language, and the propensity to change location. We identify the different regimes and the relationship with the language competition problem. Fil: Caridi, Délida Inés. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales. Ancient proteins resolve the evolutionary history of Darwin's South American ungulates.
2015
No large group of recently extinct placental mammals remains as evolutionarily cryptic as the approximately 280 genera grouped as 'South American native ungulates'. To Charles Darwin, who first collected their remains, they included perhaps the 'strangest animal[s] ever discovered'. Today, much like 180 years ago, it is no clearer whether they had one origin or several, arose before or after the Cretaceous/Palaeogene transition 66.2 million years ago, or are more likely to belong with the elephants and sirenians of superorder Afrotheria than with the euungulates (cattle, horses, and allies) of superorder Laurasiatheria. Morphology-based analyses have proved unconvincing because convergences…
Homomorphisms between Algebras of Holomorphic Functions
2014
For two complex Banach spaces X and Y, in this paper, we study the generalized spectrum M-b(X,Y) of all nonzero algebra homomorphisms from H-b(X), the algebra of all bounded type entire functions on X into H-b(Y). We endow M-b(X,Y) with a structure of Riemann domain over L(X*,Y*) whenever.. is symmetrically regular. The size of the fibers is also studied. Following the philosophy of ( Aron et al., 1991), this is a step to study the set M-b,M-infinity (X,B-Y) of all nonzero algebra homomorphisms from Hb(b) (X) into H-infinity (B-Y) of bounded holomorphic functions on the open unit ball of Y and M-infinity(B-X,B-Y) of all nonzero algebra homomorphisms from H-infinity(B-X) into H infinity (B-Y…
Group-symmetric holomorphic functions on a Banach space
2016
We study the holomorphic functions on a complex Banach space E that are invariant under the action of a given group of operators on E. A great variety of situations occur depending, of course, on the group and the space. Nevertheless, in the examples we deal with, they can be described in terms of a few natural ones and functions of a finite number of variables. Fil: Aron, Richard. Dynamics of the scenery flow and geometry of measures
2015
We employ the ergodic theoretic machinery of scenery flows to address classical geometric measure theoretic problems on Euclidean spaces. Our main results include a sharp version of the conical density theorem, which we show to be closely linked to rectifiability. Moreover, we show that the dimension theory of measure-theoretical porosity can be reduced back to its set-theoretic version, that Hausdorff and packing dimensions yield the same maximal dimension for porous and even mean porous measures, and that extremal measures exist and can be chosen to satisfy a generalized notion of self-similarity. These are sharp general formulations of phenomena that had been earlier found to hold in a n…
Medium effects in DIS from polarized nuclear targets
2014
The behavior of the nucleon structure functions in lepton nuclei deep inelastic scattering, both polarized and unpolarized, due to nuclear structure effects is reanalyzed. The study is performed in two schemes: an x-rescaling approach, and one in which there is an increase of sea quark components in the in medium nucleon, related to the low energy N-N interaction. In view of a recent interesting experimental proposal to study the behavior of the proton spin structure functions in nuclei we proceed to compare these approaches in an effort to enlighten the possible phenomenological interest of such difficult experiment.
