Effects of Nest and Colony Features on Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni) Reproductive Success

The Lesser Kestrel is a facultative colonial raptor mostly breeding in man-made structures. During 2009-2011 we checked the fate of 545 nests found in 18 colonies located in south-eastern Sicily. We determined the reproductive success of breeding pairs by analysing the survival time of each egg to hatching ( n = 2,495) and each nestling to fledging ( n = 1,849) with the linear hazard model of survival times. We determined whether egg and nestling survival differed between years with a Gehan–Wilcoxon test. By Cox regressions, we related the survival times with nest and colony features. Prediction and Surveillance Sampling Assessment in Plant Nurseries and Fields

In this paper, we propose a structured additive regression (STAR) model for modeling the occurrence of a disease in fields or nurseries. The methodological approach involves a Gaussian field (GF) affected by a spatial process represented by an approximation to a Gaussian Markov random field (GMRF). This modeling allows the building of maps with prediction probabilities regarding the presence of a disease in plants using Bayesian kriging. The advantage of this modeling is its computational benefit when compared with known spatial hierarchical models and with the Bayesian inference based on Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. Research on arboreal mammals living in Mediterranean forests is poor. Molecular research assessed the existence of an evolutionary significant unit in the edible dormouse populations living in south Italy, Sicily and Sardinia, and we decided to investigate the environmental factors capable of explaining its occurrence and abundance in Sicily, for a better management of these populations. Šī maģistra darba mērķis ir izpētīt magnētiskās nestabilitātes plānos ferokoloīdu slāņos, optiski inducējot tajos koncentrācijas režģi un pakļaujot tos ārējam magnētiskajam laukam. Paraugos ierosina temperatūras režģi ar Nd:Yag (λ=532) lāzerstaru inetrferences ainu, kas, savukārt, spēcīga Sorē efekta dēļ inducē paraugos koncentrācijas režģi. Ar He-Ne lāzera staru (λ=633nm), izmantojot hologrāfiskā attēla veidošanās efektu, optiski tiek vizualizēts daļiņu koncentrācijas sadalījums paraugā. Predation as a landscape effect: the trading off by prey species between predation risks and protection benefits.

1. Predators impose costs on their prey but may also provide benefits such as protection against other (e.g. nest) predators. The optimal breeding location in relation to the distance from a nesting raptor varies so as to minimize the sum of costs of adult and nest predation. We provide a conceptual model to account for variation in the relative predation risks and derive qualitative predictions for how different prey species should respond to the distance from goshawk Accipiter gentilis nests. 2. There is evidence that the use oral bisphosphonates can lead to osteronecrosis of the jaws (ONJ). Although the occurrence of ONJ appears rare among oral bisphosphonates (BPs) users, it is important to know that it exists and can be opportunely minimized. INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association between BPs prescribed for the secondary prevention of osteoporotic fractures and the occurrence of ONJ.
