Applied Linear Algebra: Electrical Networks
2016
This chapter shows how mathematical theory is not an abstract subject which has no connection with the real world. On the contrary, this entire book is written by stating that mathematics in general, and algebra in this case, is an integrating part of every day real life and that the professional life of computational scientists and engineers requires a solid mathematical background. In order to show how the contents of the previous chapters have an immediate technical application, the last chapter of this book describes a core engineering subject, i.e. electrical networks, as an algebraic exercise. Furthermore, this chapter shows how the combination of the algebraic topics give a natural r…
Ensuring High Performance of Consensus-Based Estimation by Lifetime Maximization in WSNs
2015
The estimation of a parameter corrupted by noise is a common tasks in wireless sensor networks, where the deployed nodes cooperate in order to improve their own inaccurate observations. This cooperation usually involves successive data exchanges and local information updates until a global consensus value is reached. The quality of the final estimator depends on the amount of collected observations, hence the number of active nodes. Moreover, the inherent iterative nature of the consensus process involves a certain energy consumption. Since the devices composing the network are usually battery powered, nodes becoming inactive due to battery depletion emerges as a serious problem. In this wo…
Paths Coloring Algorithms in Mesh Networks
2003
In this paper, we will consider the problem of coloring directed paths on a mesh network. A natural application of this graph problem is WDM-routing in all-optical networks. Our main result is a simple 4-approximation algorithm for coloring line-column paths on a mesh. We also present sharper results when there is a restriction on the path lengths. Moreover, we show that these results can be extended to toroidal meshes and to line-column or column-line paths.
Finite-Size and Illumination Conditions Effects in All-Dielectric Metasurfaces
2022
Dielectric metasurfaces have emerged as a promising alternative to their plasmonic counterparts due to lower ohmic losses, which hinder sensing applications and nonlinear frequency conversion, and their larger flexibility to shape the emission pattern in the visible regime. To date, the computational cost of full-wave numerical simulations has forced the exploitation of the Floquet theorem, which implies infinitely periodic structures, in designing such devices. In this work, we show the potential pitfalls of this approach when considering finite-size metasurfaces and beam-like illumination conditions, in contrast to the typical infinite plane-wave illumination compatible with the Floquet t…
Multi-model ensemble simulations of olive pollen distribution in Europe in 2014: current status and outlook
2017
"Çalışmada 29 yazar bulunmaktadır. Bu yazarlardan sadece Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi mensuplarının girişleri yapılmıştır” The paper presents the first modelling experiment of the European-scale olive pollen dispersion, analyses the quality of the predictions, and outlines the research needs. A 6-model strong ensemble of Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service (CAMS) was run throughout the olive season of 2014, computing the olive pollen distribution. The simulations have been compared with observations in eight countries, which are members of the European Aeroallergen Network (EAN). Analysis was performed for individual models, the ensemble mean and median, and for a dynamically optimised c…
Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) Phase 4 (2018): Change management in allergic rhinitis and asthma multimorbidity using mobile techn…
2019
Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) has evolved from a guideline by using the best approach to integrated care pathways using mobile technology in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma multimorbidity. The proposed next phase of ARIA is change management, with the aim of providing an active and healthy life to patients with rhinitis and to those with asthma multimorbidity across the lifecycle irrespective of their sex or socioeconomic status to reduce health and social inequities incurred by the disease. ARIA has followed the 8-step model of Kotter to assess and implement the effect of rhinitis on asthma multimorbidity and to propose multimorbid guidelines. A second c…
MASK 2017: ARIA digitally-enabled, integrated, person-centred care for rhinitis and asthma multimorbidity using real-world-evidence
2018
mHealth, such as apps running on consumer smart devices is becoming increasingly popular and has the potential to profoundly affect healthcare and health outcomes. However, it may be disruptive and results achieved are not always reaching the goals. Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) has evolved from a guideline using the best evidence-based approach to care pathways suited to real-life using mobile technology in allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma multimorbidity. Patients largely use over-the-counter medications dispensed in pharmacies. Shared decision making centered around the patient and based on self-management should be the norm. Mobile Airways Sentinel networK (MASK), th…
The origin of strong ties: the role of weak ties in the evolution of alliance networks
2017
Studies on the structure of alliance networks have explained how the formation, maintenance, and decay of local within cluster ties and shortcuts with semi-distant and distant organizations drive the emergence and evolution of small world architecture in such networks. Interorganizational ties are distinguished into strong and weak on the basis of their strength. Nonetheless, by focusing mainly on strong alliances ties, previous research has fallen short to explain the role of weak ties among organizations for the evolution of alliance networks. With the aim of scrutinizing the role of weak ties in the establishment, maintaining, and transforming of alliance ties, we develop a conceptual fr…
Consumers in postmodern society and alternative food networks: The organic food fairs case in Sicily
2012
New consumption habits stand out against the idea of a rational consumer, which is aimed at maximizing utility according to budget constraint. Presently, people have the tendency to behave differently according to various purchase opportunities; a significant role is played by both ethical sides and selfless motivations. These new trends fall within the context of a new social paradigm that foresees postmodern society’s rise. Consumers have the tendency to use the market as an arena in which political, ethical and environmental issues may arise, starting a new trend of an alternative consumption called “political consumerism”. In this paper we’ll try to understand how new consumption habits…
Análisis de las métricas alternativas de Archivos de Bronconeumología durante el periodo 2014-2018
2020
Introduction: Alternative metrics or altmetrics are non-traditional measurements of scientific production that reflect a publication's influence in social networks and similar channels of dissemination. The aim of this study was to analyze the media impact of ARCHIVOS DE BRONCONEUMOLOGÍA according to 2 altmetric aggregators and website visits. Methods: This was an observational study of the original articles and review and consensus articles published in ARCHIVOS DE BRONCONEUMOLOGÍA during the period 2014-2018. Data from the PlumX Metrics and Altmetric aggregators and visits to the ARCHIVOS DE BRONCONEUMOLOGÍA website were analyzed. Five comparisons were made: by specialty area, by funding …
