In vitro efficacy of a Hydrophilic Central Venous Catheter Loaded with Silver to Prevent Microbial Colonization
1998
A method was developed to load the surface of a central venous catheter with silver to prevent bacterial colonization. Silver confers a broad antimicrobial activity with a relatively low risk of resistance. Catheters were incubated with a silver nitrate solution in different concentrations. The solvent, incubation temperature and incubation period were varied to examine the influence on the catheter loading. With increasing incubation temperature, time and concentration of silver nitrate, higher rates of silver elution were observed by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Furthermore, by using ethanol-water as a solvent instead of pure water, the amount of silver bound to the catheter surface wa…
Transcriptional regulation and energetics of alternative respiratory pathways in facultatively anaerobic bacteria
1998
Abstract The facultatively anaerobic Escherichia coli is able to grow by aerobic and by anaerobic respiration. Despite the large difference in the amount of free energy that could maximally be conserved from aerobic versus anaerobic respiration, the proton potential and Δg ′ Phos are similar under both conditions. O 2 represses anaerobic respiration, and nitrate represses fumarate respiration. By this the terminal reductases of aerobic and anaerobic respiration are expressed in a way to obtain maximal H + e − ratios and ATP yields. The respiratory dehydrogenases, on the other hand, are not synthesized in a way to achieve maximal H + e − ratios. Most of the dehydrogenases of aerobic respirat…
Mesoporous SBA-15 silica modified with cerium oxide: Effect of ceria loading on support modification
2010
Abstract The present work investigates the effect of ceria loading on silica SBA-15. Five CeO2/SBA-15 samples with CeO2 content equal to 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 wt% were prepared by wetness-impregnation of the support with cerium nitrate hexahydrate, as precursor, dissolved in ethanol. After drying at room temperature, the resulting samples were calcined at 400 °C for 2h. Characterizations by BET surface area and pore-size distribution, XRD, NH3-TPD and H2-TPR were performed.
Tansy fruit mediated greener synthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles
2010
Abstract In this paper we have reported the green synthesis of silver (AgNPs) and gold (AuNPs) nanoparticles by reduction of silver nitrate and chloroauric acid solutions, respectively, using fruit extract of Tanacetum vulgare ; commonly found plant in Finland. The process for the synthesis of AgNPs and AuNPs is rapid, novel and ecofriendly. Formation of the AgNPs and AuNPs were confirmed by surface plasmon spectra using UV–Vis spectrophotometer and absorbance peaks at 452 and 546 nm. Different tansy fruit extract concentration (TFE), silver and gold ion concentration, temperature and contact times were experimented in the synthesis of AgNPs and AuNPs. The properties of prepared nanoparticl…
Sodium nitrate and tungsten as matrix modifiers for the determination of arsenic in shotgun pellets by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry
2001
A method for the determination of arsenic in a complicated sample matrix by Zeeman effect electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry using tungsten and sodium nitrate as matrix modifiers was developed. The determination of arsenic in SRM C2416 (Bullet Lead) and SRM 2710 (Montana Soil) by ETAAS using a mixture of palladium and magnesium nitrate as a matrix modifier failed to obtain the certified concentrations at the 95% level of confidence using the t-test. Both tungsten and sodium nitrate as matrix modifiers stabilized arsenic so that the certified concentrations of the SRMs were determined with high accuracy and precision (RSD 0.999), with low detection and quantification limits, wer…
Strategies to decrease water drainage and nitrate emission from soilless cultures of greenhouse tomato
2010
In the spring-summer season of 2005 and 2006, we explored the influence of three fertigation strategies (A–C) on the water and nitrogen use efficiency of semi-closed rockwool culture of greenhouse tomato conducted using saline water (NaCl concentration of 9.5 mol m−3). The strategies under comparison were the following: (A) crop water uptake was compensated by refilling the mixing tank with nutrient solution at full strength (with the concentrations of macronutrients equal or close to the corresponding mean uptake concentrations as determined in previous studies) and the recirculating nutrient solution was flushed out whenever its electrical conductivity (EC) surpassed 4.5 dS m−1 due to the…

Isobaric Vapor−Liquid Equilibria for 1-Propanol + Water + Calcium Nitrate
1999
Isobaric vapor−liquid equilibria for all of the binary and ternary mixtures of 1-propanol, water, and calcium nitrate have been measured at 100.00 kPa using a recirculating still. The addition of calcium nitrate to the solvent mixture produced an important salt effect; the azeotrope was removed at salt mole fractions higher than 0.08. The three experimental binary data sets were independently fitted with the electrolyte NRTL model (Mock, B.; Evans, L. B.; Chen, C. C. AIChE J. 1986, 32, 1655−1664), and the parameters of Mock's model were estimated for each binary system. No ternary parameter was required. These parameters were used to predict the ternary vapor−liquid equilibrium using the sa…
Separation of U(VI) and Th(IV) from Some Rare Earths by Thin Layer Chromatography with Di‐(2‐Ethylhexyl)‐Dithiophosphoric Acid on Silica Gel
2005
Abstract Separation of U(VI) and Th(IV) from some rare earths by TLC has been studied using silica gel H and silica gel H impregnated with ammonium nitrate as the stationary phase. The solvent mixture ethyl‐methyl‐ketone–tetrahydrofuran (6∶3, v/v) containing di-(2‐ethylhexyl)-dithiophosphoric acid was used as the mobile phase. When silica gel H impregnated with 2.5 M NH4NO3 was used as stationary phase, the resolution was much improved and the separation of rare earths from each other was also achieved. The tetrad‐effect was observed in variation of R*m versus the atomic number of rare earths.
