Laboratory parameters in centenarians of Italian ancestry
2008
Studies aimed at collecting reference parameters for haematochemical analysis in the elderly are scarce and for the oldest old subjects even more rare. In order to establish the reference values for the most common laboratory text in long living individuals, we measured haematochemical parameters in >100 years old subjects and in aged subjects as control. Six hundred and two centenarians accepted to be enrolled in the study. A case history containing the complete anamnesis, clinical examinations, evaluation of the clinical cognitive and functional tests, was prepared for each centenarian. Blood samples from 120 > 100 years old subjects free of chronic or acute Illness (i.e. Alzheimer’s dise…

Bulk stable nitrogen isotope values of the carbonate-bound organic matrix in bivalve shells (δ15NCBOM) are increasingly used to assess past food web dynamics, track anthropogenic nitrogen pollution and reconstruct hydrographic changes. However, it remains unresolved if the δ15NCBOM values are also affected by directed ontogenetic trends which can bias ecological and environmental interpretations. This very aspect is tested here with modern and fossil specimens of the long-lived ocean quahog, Arctica islandica, collected from different sites and water depths in the NE Atlantic Ocean. As demonstrated, δ15NCBOM values from the long chronologies show a general decrease through lifetime by −0.00…

The MAREDAT atlas covers 11 types of plankton, ranging in size from bacteria to jellyfish. Together, these plankton groups determine the health and productivity of the global ocean and play a vital role in the global carbon cycle. Working within a uniform and consistent spatial and depth grid (map) of the global ocean, the researchers compiled thousands and tens of thousands of data points to identify regions of plankton abundance and scarcity as well as areas of data abundance and scarcity. At many of the grid points, the MAREDAT team accomplished the difficult conversion from abundance (numbers of organisms) to biomass (carbon mass of organisms). The MAREDAT atlas provides an unprecedente…
Study of the effect of H2S, MeSH and DMS on the sensory profile of wine model solutions by Rate-All-That-Apply (RATA)
2016
The effect of hydrogen sulfide (HS), methanethiol (MeSH) and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) on the odor properties of three wine models-WM- (young white, young red and oaked red wines) was studied. Wine models were built by mixing a pool of common wine volatile and non-volatile compounds and further spiked with eight different combinations of the three sulfur compounds present at two levels (level 0: 0 μg L and level 1: 40 μg L of HS, 12 μg L of MeSH; 55 μg L of DMS). For each wine matrix eight WMs were produced and further submitted to sensory description by Rate-All-That-Apply (RATA) method. Hydrogen sulfide and methanethiol were clearly involved in the formation of reductive aromas and shared th…

Introduction of a novel pathway for IAA biosynthesis to rhizobia alters vech root nodule developmt
2008
We introduced into Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viciae LPR1105 a new pathway for the biosynthesis of the auxin, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), under the control of a stationary phase-activated promoter active both in free-liv- ing bacteria and bacteroids. The newly introduced genes are the iaaM gene from Pseudomonas savastanoi and the tms2 gene from Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Free-living bacteria harbouring the promoter-iaaMtms2 construct release into the growth medium 14-fold more IAA than the wild-type parental strain. This IAA overproducing R. l. viciae, the RD20 strain, elicits the development of vetch root nodules containing up to 60-fold more IAA than nodules infected by the wild-type str…
HNO3 partitioning in cirrus clouds
1999
During the 1997 POLSTAR-1 winter campaign in northern Sweden a flight was performed across a cold trough of air (similar or equal to 196 K) in the tropopause region. Measurements of total water vapour, nitric acid, particles and reactive nitrogen (NOy) were taken. The particle measurements indicate that about 3% of the particles in the moist tropospheric air were ice particles. Forward and backward facing NOy inlets were used simultaneously to determine condensed phase HNO3. The combined NOy and particle measurements reveal that less than 1% of a monolayer of NOy could have resided on the ice particles. This casts doubt on the hypothesis that sedimenting cirrus particles generally lead to a…
Predicting in situ soil N2O emission using NOE algorithm and soil database
2005
This paper presents a new algorithm, Nitrous Oxide Emission (NOE) for simulating the emission of the greenhouse gas N2O from agricultural soils. N2O fluxes are calculated as the result of production through denitrification and nitrification and reduction through the last step of denitrification. Actual denitrification and nitrification rates are calculated from biological parameters and soil water-filled pore space, temperature and mineral nitrogen contents. New suggestions in NOE consisted in introducing (1) biological site-specific parameters of soil N2O reduction and (2) reduction of the N2O produced through nitrification to N2 through denitrification. This paper includes a database of 6…
Decongestion discriminates risk for one-year mortality in patients with improving renal function in acute heart failure
2021
Aims Improving renal function (IRF) is paradoxically associated with worse outcomes in acute heart failure (AHF), but outcomes may differ based on response to decongestion. We explored if the relationship of IRF with mortality in hospitalized AHF patients differs based on successful decongestion. Methods and results We evaluated 760 AHF patients from AKINESIS for the relationship between IRF, change in B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), and 1-year mortality. IRF was defined as a >= 20% increase in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) relative to admission. Adequate decongestion was defined as a >= 40% decrease in last measured BNP relative to admission. IRF occurred in 22% of pat…
Biological nutrient removal using intermittent aeration in a hybrid moving bed biofilm reactor
2012
The paper presents an experimental study on a lab scale pilot plant in a Hybrid Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor. The pilot plant was fed with synthetic wastewater and was in operation considering two different operating conditions: continuous aeration and intermittent aeration. Both continuous and intermittent aeration were monitored and compared in order to seek the best conditions for carbon and nitrogen removal. At the beginning of the experimentation, an initial period of about 90 days was considered during which the pilot plant worked in bench scale configuration for allowing the formation of biofilm on the carriers. Once the biofilm growth was accomplished, the pilot plant worked for a fir…
