Rhetorical deliberation. A sustainable normativism from a Gorgianic-Aristotelian perspective
2018
Starting from the discursive turn that has characterized democracy since the 80s of the last century, our article tries to outline a form of sustainable normativism. To do this, we use a theoretical framework derived from ancient Greek rhetoric and in particular from the reflection of Gorgias and Aristotle. In our perspective, on the one hand, the Gorgianic view is a useful reminder of the role that the pursuit of power and the possibility of conflict unavoidably play in the form of argumentation specific to the public sphere, that is, deliberation. On the other hand, Aristotle, thanks to his emphasis on the link between logos and desire and his analysis of truth available in deliberative c…

Improving the Competency of Classifiers through Data Generation
2001
This paper describes a hybrid approach in which sub-symbolic neural networks and symbolic machine learning algorithms are grouped into an ensemble of classifiers. Initially each classifier determines which portion of the data it is most competent in. The competency information is used to generated new data that are used for further training and prediction. The application of this approach in a difficult to learn domain shows an increase in the predictive power, in terms of the accuracy and level of competency of both the ensemble and the component classifiers.
The sit up test to exhaustion as a test for muscular endurance evaluation
2015
Aims/Hypothesis The aim of this study was to examine the sit up test to exhaustion as a field test for muscular endurance evaluation in a sample of sedentary people of both sexes. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed. Three-hundred-eighty-one participants volunteered for the study (28.5 ± 10.0 years; 168.2 ± 8.9 cm; 65.1 ± 11.1 kg), of which 194 males (27.5 ± 10.2 years; 173.6 ± 7.0 cm; 71.2 ± 5.2 kg) and 187 females (29.6 ± 10.1 years; 162.6 ± 7.1 cm; 58.7 ± 8.9 kg). Each subject voluntarily and randomly performed: a sit up test (SUT), a push up test (PUT), and a free weight squat test (ST), all till exhaustion. A multiple regression analysis was adopted for data analysis. Subsequ…
Transcriptomic metaanalyses of autistic brains reveals shared gene expression and biological pathway abnormalities with cancer
2019
Este es el artículo que se ha publicado de forma definitiva en: https://molecularautism.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13229-019-0262-8 En este artículo también participa Joan Climent, Vera Pancaldi, Lourdes Fañanás, Celso Arango, Mara Parellada, Anaïs Baudot, Daniel Vogt, John L. Rubenstein, Alfonso Valencia y Rafael Tabarés-Seisdedos. Background: Epidemiological and clinical evidence points to cancer as a comorbidity in people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). A significant overlap of genes and biological processes between both diseases has also been reported. Methods: Here, for the first time, we compared the gene expression profiles of ASD frontal cortex tissues and 22 cancer t…

Human stem cells from single blastomeres reveal pathways of embryonic or trophoblast fate specification.
2015
Mechanisms of initial cell fate decisions differ among species. To gain insights into lineage allocation in humans, we derived ten human embryonic stem cell lines (designated UCSFB1-10) from single blastomeres of four 8-cell embryos and one 12-cell embryo from a single couple. Compared with numerous conventional lines from blastocysts, they had unique gene expression and DNA methylation patterns that were, in part, indicative of trophoblast competence. At a transcriptional level, UCSFB lines from different embryos were often more closely related than those from the same embryo. As predicted by the transcriptomic data, immunolocalization of EOMES, T brachyury, GDF15 and active β-catenin reve…
A double mean field equation related to a curvature prescription problem
2019
We study a double mean field-type PDE related to a prescribed curvature problem on compacts surfaces with boundary. We provide a general blow-up analysis, then a Moser-Trudinger inequality, which gives energy-minimizing solutions for some range of parameters. Finally, we provide existence of min-max solutions for a wider range of parameters, which is dense in the plane if $$ is not simply connected.
Functional connectivity inference from fMRI data using multivariate information measures
2022
Abstract Shannon’s entropy or an extension of Shannon’s entropy can be used to quantify information transmission between or among variables. Mutual information is the pair-wise information that captures nonlinear relationships between variables. It is more robust than linear correlation methods. Beyond mutual information, two generalizations are defined for multivariate distributions: interaction information or co-information and total correlation or multi-mutual information. In comparison to mutual information, interaction information and total correlation are underutilized and poorly studied in applied neuroscience research. Quantifying information flow between brain regions is not explic…
