IFT46 Expression in the Nasal Mucosa of Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia Patients: Preliminary Study

2021

Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la siguiente URL: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/2152656721989288 Background: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is characterised by an imbalance in mucociliary clearance leading to chronic respiratory infections. Cilia length is considered to be a contributing factor in cilia movement. Recently, IFT46 protein has been related to cilia length. Therefore, this work aims to study IFT46 expression in a PCD patients cohort and analyse its relationship with cilia length and function, as it was not previously described. Materials and methods: The expression of one intraflagellar transport (IFT46) and two regulating ciliary architecture (FOXJ1 a…

Reconstruction of Nasal Alar Defects with Freestyle Facial Artery Perforator Flaps

2014

In 2009, we have described the use of freestyle facial artery perforator flaps for one-stage nose reconstruction. Since then, several articles have reported the use of facial artery perforator flaps for nose reconstruction. The purpose of this article is to provide an update of the published technique after 10 years of experience. Since 2004, 21 patients have been treated with a freestyle facial artery perforator flap for one-stage reconstruction of the nasal ala. The flaps were 16 propellers, 4 V-Y, and 1 island transposition. A single venous congestion leading to a minor flap tip necrosis and a wound dehiscence was observed. All other flaps healed uneventfully. The V-Y design and multiple…

Clarithromycin in the Management of Chronic Rhinosinusitis: Preliminary Results of a Possible Its New Use

2018

The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of prolonged therapy with low-dose clarithromycin in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with polyps (CRSwP) after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). A total of 10 patients with CRSwP were identified and subjected to bilateral ESS. In post-operative patients they were treated with nasal wash with saline solution and steroid sprays (beclomethasone). During follow-up, after 30–40 days after the operation (M = 35.4 SD = +4.33), patients reported a worsening of symptoms with onset of nasal obstruction; reduction/loss of smell; headache; onset of viscous secretions and therefore all patients continued therapy with saline nasal irrigation…

The Nasal Epithelium as a Factory for Systemic Protein Delivery

2002

We have previously shown that recombinant Sendai virus (SeV) produces efficient in vivo airway epithelial gene transfer. The ability to produce therapeutic levels of circulating proteins following noninvasive gene transfer would have widespread clinical application. Here, we compared nose, lung, and skeletal muscle for the ability to produce circulating levels of the secreted mouse antiinflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 (IL10) following SeV-mediated gene transfer. High levels of serum IL10 were obtained from each site with a potency order of lung > nose > muscle for a given viral titer. Serum levels from each site were within the likely required range for anti-inflammatory effects. The co…
