Central functional response to the novel peptide cannabinoid, hemopressin.

Hemopressin is the first peptide ligand to be described for the CB₁ cannabinoid receptor. Hemopressin acts as an inverse agonist in vivo and can cross the blood-brain barrier to both inhibit appetite and induce antinociception. Despite being highly effective, synthetic CB₁ inverse agonists are limited therapeutically due to unwanted, over dampening of central reward pathways. However, hemopressin appears to have its effect on appetite by affecting satiety rather than reward, suggesting an alternative mode of action which might avoid adverse side effects. Search for neutrino emission from gamma-ray flaring blazars with the ANTARES telescope

The ANTARES telescope observes a full hemisphere of the sky all the time with a duty cycle close to 100%. This makes it well suited for an extensive observation of neutrinos produced in astrophysical transient sources. In the surrounding medium of blazars, i.e. active galactic nuclei with their jets pointing almost directly towards the observer, neutrinos may be produced together with gamma-rays by hadronic interactions, so a strong correlation between neutrinos and gamma-rays emissions is expected. Dual targeting of higher-order DNA structures by azacryptands induces DNA junction-mediated DNA damage in cancer cells

Abstract DNA is intrinsically dynamic and folds transiently into alternative higher-order structures such as G-quadruplexes (G4s) and three-way DNA junctions (TWJs). G4s and TWJs can be stabilised by small molecules (ligands) that have high chemotherapeutic potential, either as standalone DNA damaging agents or combined in synthetic lethality strategies. While previous approaches have claimed to use ligands that specifically target either G4s or TWJs, we report here on a new approach in which ligands targeting both TWJs and G4s in vitro demonstrate cellular effects distinct from that of G4 ligands, and attributable to TWJ targeting. XMM-Newton survey of the ELAIS-S1 field

The formation and evolution of cosmic structures can be probed by studying the evolution of the luminosity function of the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), galaxies and clusters of galaxies and of the clustering of the X-ray active Universe, compared to the IR-UV active Universe. To this purpose, we have surveyed with XMM-Newton the central ~0.6{deg}^2^ region of the ELAIS-S1 field down to flux limits of ~5.5x10^-16^erg/cm^2^/s (0.5-2keV, soft band, S), ~2x10^-15^erg/cm^2^/s (2-10keV, hard band, H), and ~4x10^-15^erg/cm^2^/s (5-10keV, ultra hard band, HH). A new sample of large angular size radio galaxies

We present in this paper a detailed study of a new sample of large angular size FR I and FR II radio galaxies and compare the properties of the two classes. As expected, a pure morphology based distinction of FR Is and FR IIs corresponds to a break in total radio power. The radio cores in FR Is are also weaker than in FR IIs, although there is not a well defined break power. We find that asymmetry in the structure of the sample members must be the consequence of anisotropies in the medium where the lobes expand, with orientation playing a minor role. The reverse transcription signature of N-1-methyladenosine in RNA-Seq is sequence dependent

The combination of Reverse Transcription (RT) and high-throughput sequencing has emerged as a powerful combination to detect modified nucleotides in RNA via analysis of either abortive RT-products or of the incorporation of mismatched dNTPs into cDNA. Here we simultaneously analyze both parameters in detail with respect to the occurrence of N-1-methyladenosine (m1A) in the template RNA. This naturally occurring modification is associated with structural effects, but it is also known as a mediator of antibiotic resistance in ribosomal RNA. Should Vanishing Twin Pregnancies Be Systematically Excluded From Cell-Free Fetal DNA Testing?

Objective To demonstrate the feasibility of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) testing in vanishing twin (VT) pregnancies in routine clinical practice. Methods Our study included 24 874 singleton and 206 VT consecutive pregnancies. Cell-free DNA was analyzed by massively parallel sequencing. Both aneuploidy analysis (chromosomes 13,18, 21, X, and Y) and fetal fraction estimation were performed according to an Illumina algorithm. Contaminant DNA contribution from the demised co-twin was studied in detail.
