Maximal Strength, Muscular Endurance and Inflammatory Biomarkers in Young Adult Men

The aim was to study associations of maximal strength and muscular endurance with inflammatory biomarkers independent of cardiorespiratory fitness in those with and without abdominal obesity. 686 young healthy men participated (25±5 years). Maximal strength was measured via isometric testing using dynamo-meters to determine maximal strength index. Muscular endurance index consisted of push-ups, sit-ups and repeated squats. An indirect cycle ergometer test until exhaustion was used to estimate maximal aerobic capacity (VO2max). Involvement of insulin resistance in normoglycaemic obese patients with periodontitis: A cross-sectional study

Aim We explored the association between obesity and periodontitis with the aim of determining the possible role of insulin resistance (IR) in this relationship. Materials and Methods A total of 212 subjects –110 obese and 102 lean individuals– were evaluated for periodontal disease and divided according to IR: a lean group without IR (LWIR); an obese group without IR (OWIR); and an obese group with IR (OIR). Laparoscopic gastric banding as a universal method for the treatment of patients with morbid obesity.

Introduction: This study analyzed the influence of potentially negative predictors such as sweet-eating behavior, super-obesity, social and psychological status, family and education situation, intake of sedative drugs, and the distance between hospital and home on the outcome of laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB). Methods: 77 women and 29 men with mean age 40.6 years (28-47) underwent LAGB. Preoperative mean body weight was 146 kg (99-179), and mean BMI was 48.1 kg/m 2 (36.4-73.5). Homocysteine levels and the metabolic syndrome in a Mediterranean population: A case-control study

Hyperhomocysteinemia (HH) and metabolic syndrome (MS) are associated with increased cardiovascular risk. However, whether there is a link between MS or its components and homocysteine levels in a population without cardiovascular disease is not well established. We conducted a case-control study in 61 MS patients (41 males, 20 females, aged 51 ± 11 years) and in 98 controls without MS (59 males, 39 females, aged 50 ± 10 years) to ascertain the association between MS and HH, and with inflammatory markers. Renal plasma flow, filtration fraction and microalbuminuria in hypertensive patients: Effects of chronic smoking

SUMMARY: Introduction:  Albumin excretion rate is usually increased in people who smoke, but the physiological basis of this phenomenon is not fully understood. Methods:  The effect of chronic smoking on renal haemodynamics was studied in a cohort of 66 men. Twenty-seven were smokers and 36 were hypertensive. In all subjects, the albumin excretion rate was evaluated; in hypertensive patients, a renoscintigraphic evaluation of renal plasma flow and glomerular filtration were carried out and the filtration fraction was calculated. Several studies have found an association between hyperuricemia and metabolic syndrome (MS), although there are discrepancies as to which MS components play a pivotal role in this association. We aimed to investigate the association between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and MS in a Mediterranean population (eastern Spain).
