Prognosis of Patients Listed for a Heart Transplant During the Pretransplant Period: Does Diabetes Matter?

2013

Whether patients with advanced heart failure and diabetes mellitus (DM) should be listed for heart transplantation (HTx) remains controversial due to conflicting findings regarding their post-HTx survival (1–3). We studied HTx candidates with and without DM during the pre-HTx period, examining multiple waiting list outcomes. Patients were enrolled in the Waiting for a New Heart Study, a multisite observational study of 318 adult (≥18 years of age) patients (aged 53 ± 11 years; 18% female) who were newly listed for HTx with Eurotransplant between April 2005 and December 2006 (4). Informed consent and ethics approval were obtained (4). Characteristics at the time of listing included age, DM, …

Time course of antipsychotic treatment response in schizophrenia: Results from a naturalistic study in 280 patients

2010

To describe the course of positive and negative symptoms during inpatient treatment and examine remission and response rates under routine clinical care conditions. Two hundred and eighty inpatients with schizophrenia (DSM-IV criteria) were assessed with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) at admission and at biweekly intervals until discharge from hospital. Remission was defined according to the symptom-severity component of the consensus criteria (Remission in Schizophrenia Working Group) as a rating of three or less in the relevant PANSS items at discharge, and response as a reduction of at least 20% in the PANSS total score from admission to discharge. The mean duration of in…

Do equilibrium constraints modulate postural reaction when viewing imbalance?

2011

Abstract Action observation and action execution are tightly coupled on a neurophysiological and a behavioral level, such that visually perceiving an action can contaminate simultaneous and subsequent action execution. More specifically, observing a model in postural disequilibrium was shown to induce an increase in observers’ body sway. Here we reciprocally questioned the role of observers’ motor system in the contagion process by comparing participants’ body sway when watching displays of antero-posterior vs. lateral imbalance. Indeed, during upright standing, biomechanical constraints differ along the antero-posterior (A-P) and medio-lateral (M-L) axes; hence an impact of observers’ post…

Altered Food Behavior and Cancer: A Systematic Review of the Literature

2022

There is evidence of an association between cancer and certain types of altered eating behaviors, including orthorexia, food cravings, and food addiction. Given the growing interest in the topic throughout the scientific community we conducted a systematic review to summarize current evidence on the development of altered food behavior, including food addiction and cancer. The Cochrane Collaboration and the Meta-analysis Of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines were followed to perform this systematic review. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement was used to report the process and results. The structured literature search was co…

Intercomparison of spanish advanced lidars in the framework of EARLINET

2007

To extend and reinforce the action of the EARLINET- ASOS project, a nucleus of Spanish advanced lidars was created. Four systems were intercompared satisfactorily in terms of backscatter coefficients at two elastic wavelengths. Peer Reviewed

Affective temperaments in tango dancers.

2015

Background: Links between affective temperaments and folk culture have been infrequently explored systematically. Creativity and personality and temperament studies, conversely, have reported several associations. Tango is one of the most typical Argentinean folk dance-musical repertoires. The main purpose of this study is to compare affective temperaments between Argentinean professional tango dancers and the general population. Methods: TEMPS-A was administered to a sample of 63 professional tango dancers and 63 comparison subjects from the general population who did not practice tango. Subscale median scores and total median scores with non-parametric statistics were analyzed. Results: M…

A method for the surface reflectance retrieval from PROBA/CHRIS data over land: application to ESA SPARC campaigns

2005

The Compact High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (CHRIS) onboard the Project for On-Board Autonomy (PROBA) platform system provides the first high spatial resolution hyper-spectral/multiangular remote sensing data from a satellite system, what represents a new source of information for Earth Observation purposes. A fully consistent radiative transfer approach is always preferred when dealing with the retrieval of surface reflectance from hyperspectral/multiangular data. However, due to the reported calibration anomalies for CHRIS data, a direct atmospheric correction based on physical radiative transfer modeling is not possible, and the method must somehow compensate for such calibration pr…

Participant Observation in Online Multiplayer Communities

2011

This chapter discusses participant observation as a method of data collection for studying social interaction in online multiplayer games and the communities within them. Participant observation has its roots in the social sciences, and especially in the field of anthropology. True to a natural inquiry approach, studies utilizing participant observation try to understand the actual habitat or “lifeworld” of those participating in the study. This chapter looks at various practical issues connected to conducting participant observation in online multiplayer communities. Examples of data collection are presented, including saving log files, capturing images and video, and writing field notes. …

Modes of motion in a confined colloidal suspension under shear

2004

We investigated aqueous suspensions of charged polystyrene latex spheres at low salt concentration under the combined influence of steady shear and confining walls. Their equilibrium structure was adjusted via the particle and salt concentration to be either fluid or body centred cubic. Using high-resolution real-space microscopy, we here present a first direct observation of collective modes of motion under shear. As a function of either shear rate and/or salt concentration, we find a continuous transition from registered to free sliding of layers accompanied by an equally continuous structural rearrangement lowering the dimensionality of long-ranged order.

A web-based autonomous weather monitoring system of the town of Palermo and its utilization for temperature nowcasting

2008

Weather data are crucial to correctly design buildings and their heating and cooling systems and to assess their energy performances. In the intensely urbanized towns the effect of climatic parameters is further emphasized by the "urban heat island" phenomenon, known as the increase in the air temperature of urban areas, compared to the conditions measured in the extra-urban areas. The analysis of the heat island needs detailed local climate data which can be collected only by a dedicated weather monitoring system. The Department of Energy and Environmental Researches of the University of Palermo has built up a weather monitoring system that works 24 hours per day and makes data available i…
