Grounding social criticism : from understanding to suffering and back

2019

This paper critically examines John Dewey’s and Axel Honneth’s critical social philosophies in order to highlight two different normative sources of social struggle: scientific understanding and social suffering. The paper discusses the relations of these sources with each other and aims to show to what extent the normative sources of Dewey’s and Honneth’s critical social theories are compatible. A further aim is to use the comparison between Dewey and Honneth in order to argue for a desiderata for critical social ontology. The argument is that we want to consistently include both elements – suffering and understanding – in critical social theory as only by having both will critical theory …

Integration of Spatial processing and knowledge Processing through the Semantic Web Stack

2011

International audience; This paper presents the integration process of spatial technologies and Semantic Web technologies and its associated tool. The result of this work is a spatial query and rule engine of spatial. To do so, existing ontology with spatial elements is adjusted in order to process the spatial knowledge through spatial technologies. This paper outlines the methods and the processes of these adjustments and how results are returned by our tool. The SWRL and the SPARQL language are extended for spatial purpose and the existing OWL ontology wine is used as an application example.

The Structure of Group Identification

2017

The concept of group identification has been widely discussed in the fields of social psychology and social ontology. The debate has been somewhat unbalanced, however. The structure, nature, and experiential status of groups have been assessed widely and from several perspectives. Instead, the concept of identification as received considerably less attention. This is why the ongoing debate threatens to be misled by various conceptual ambiguities. These ambiguities concern first and foremost the target, structure, and temporal nature of identification. The present article offers a philosophical analysis of the concept and clarifies the conceptual ambiguities haunting the debate. peerReviewed

Soggettività, identità, metafisica. Da Cartesio a Wittgenstein

2019

In recent articles I analysed the relationship between the proposals for a criti- que or “reformation” of metaphysics formulated according to the analytical and the continental points of view, underlining how in the former case there was an interest not so much in definitively dismissing metaphysics as in purifying it from obscure notions. In particular, I focussed on the way in which the notions of “totality” and “absolute” have been thoroughly reconsidered within a metaphysics that has been oriented towards a plane of scientific consistency. This essay aims to verify whether the notion of subjectivity could be considered another of the “great renunciations” on which many scholars of conte…

A Hidden Markov Model for Automatic Generation of ER Diagrams from OWL Ontology

2014

Connecting ontological representations and data models is a crucial need in enterprise knowledge management, above all in the case of federated enterprises where corporate ontologies are used to share information coming from different databases. OWL to ERD transformations are a challenging research field in this scenario, due to the loss of expressiveness arising when OWL axioms have to be represented using ERD notation. In this paper we propose an innovative technique for estimating the most likely composition of ERD constructs that correspond to a given sequence of OWL axioms. We model such a process using a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) where the OWL inputs are the observable states, while E…

Introduction of a spatial layer in the Semantic Web framework : a proposition through the Web platform ArchaeoKM

2011

Spatial technology has gained momentum under database systems. More specifically, the spatial operations and spatial functions are used to carry out spatial analysis which can be executed through these database systems. In addition, there has been significant amount of research in the field of the geospatial ontology domain in order to achieve the semantic interoperability between different data sources. Although, data interoperability is one of the main objectives of the Semantic Web technologies, the potentiality of the underlying knowledge tools and techniques have not been completely identified. With the growing influence of the Semantic Web technologies towards the application based on…

Urinary MicroRNA Profiling Predicts the Development of Microalbuminuria in Patients with Type 1 Diabetes

2015

Microalbuminuria provides the earliest clinical marker of diabetic nephropathy among patients with Type 1 diabetes, yet it lacks sensitivity and specificity for early histological manifestations of disease. In recent years microRNAs have emerged as potential mediators in the pathogenesis of diabetes complications, suggesting a possible role in the diagnosis of early stage disease. We used quantiative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to evaluate the expression profile of 723 unique microRNAs in the normoalbuminuric urine of patients who did not develop nephropathy (n = 10) relative to patients who subsequently developed microalbuminuria (n = 17). Eighteen microRNAs were strongly associated w…

UML Style Graphical Notation and Editor for OWL 2

2010

OWL is becoming the most widely used knowledge representation language. It has several textual notations but no standard graphical notation apart from verbose ODM UML. We propose an extension to UML class diagrams (heavyweight extension) that allows a compact OWL visualization. The compactness is achieved through the native power of UML class diagrams extended with optional Manchester encoding for class expressions thus largely eliminating the need for explicit anonymous class visualization. To use UML class diagram notation we had to modify its semantics to support Open World Assumption that is central to OWL. We have implemented the proposed compact visualization for OWL 2 in a UML style …

Ontology languages for the semantic web: A never completely updated review

2006

This paper gives a never completely account of approaches that have been used for the research community for representing knowledge. After underlining the importance of a layered approach and the use of standards, it starts with early efforts used for artificial intelligence researchers. Then recent approaches, aimed mainly at the semantic web, are described. Coding examples from the literature are presented in both sections. Finally, the semantic web ontology creation process, as we envision it, is introduced.

Ontology-Based Information System

2014

We describe a novel way for creating information systems based on ontologies. The described solution is aimed at domain experts who would benefit from being able to quickly prototype fully-functional, web-based information system for data input, editing and analysis. The systems backbone is SPARQL 1.1 endpoint that enables organization users to view and edit the data, while outside users can get read-only access to the endpoint. The system prototype is implemented and successfully tested with Latvian medical data ontology with 60 classes and imported 5 000 000 data-level triples.
