New In-Depth Analytical Approach of the Porcine Seminal Plasma Proteome Reveals Potential Fertility Biomarkers
2018
A complete characterization of the proteome of seminal plasma (SP) is an essential step to understand how SP influences sperm function and fertility after artificial insemination (AI). The purpose of this study was to identify which among characterized proteins in boar SP were differently expressed among AI boars with significantly different fertility outcomes. A total of 872 SP proteins, 390 of them belonging specifically to Sus Scrofa taxonomy, were identified (Experiment 1) by using a novel proteomic approach that combined size exclusion chromatography and solid-phase extraction as prefractionation steps prior to Nano LC-ESI-MS/MS analysis. The SP proteomes of 26 boars showing significan…
Impact of diet-induced obesity on the mouse brain phosphoproteome
2018
Obesity is closely associated to several diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hepatic steatosis, airway disease, neurodegeneration, biliary diseases and certain cancers. It is, therefore, of importance to assess the role of nutrition in disease prevention as well as its effect in the course of such pathologies. In the present study, we addressed the impact of the exposure to different obesogenic diets in the mice brains phosphoproteome. To analyze if the obesity could be able to modify the protein pattern expression of brain neurons, obesity was induced in two different groups of mice. One group of mice was fed with hyperglycemic diet (HGD) and the other one was fed wit…
Complement Activation in Peritoneal Dialysis–Induced Arteriolopathy
2017
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of increased mortality in patients with CKD and is further aggravated by peritoneal dialysis (PD). Children are devoid of preexisting CVD and provide unique insight into specific uremia- and PD-induced pathomechanisms of CVD. We obtained peritoneal specimens from children with stage 5 CKD at time of PD catheter insertion (CKD5 group), children with established PD (PD group), and age-matched nonuremic controls (n=6/group). We microdissected omental arterioles from tissue layers not directly exposed to PD fluid and used adjacent sections of four arterioles per patient for transcriptomic and proteomic analyses. Findings were validated in omenta…
Locality-Sensitive Hashing for Massive String-Based Ontology Matching
2014
This paper reports initial research results related to the use of locality-sensitive hashing (LSH) for string-based matching of big ontologies. Two ways of transforming the matching problem into a LSH problem are proposed and experimental results are reported. The performed experiments show that using LSH for ontology matching could lead to a very fast matching process. The quality of the alignment achieved in these experiments is comparable to state-of-the-art matchers, but much faster. Further research is needed to find out whether the use of different metrics or specific hardware would improve the results. peerReviewed
The Ontology of Matter. Epekeina vol. 6 n. 2/2015
2015
How do we experience matter? Does it present itself to the senses? Or is it only an empty substratum that cannot be grasped if deprived of all sensible qualities? Is it perceived as a continuum, or rather intellectually reconstructed through mental and logical forms? Or is it that the very idea of a continuum is itself the outcome of mental abstraction? The nature of matter has been a central issue for philosophy since its inception. The constant oscillation of ancient thought between ma er as indeterminateness that does not have a concept and does not even properly exist - and matter as a principle that allows one to think plurality and otherness, that reaches even into the realm of the in…
Metafisica o Ontologia?
2015
A translation of Markus' Gabriel original essay "Metaphysik oder Ontologie?".
Reformations of Metaphysics? Historical and Critical Remarks
2016
A historical survey on the concept of "overcoming of metaphysics" as stated in both philosophies which lie at the core of the so-called "great divide" between analytical and continental philosophy: Heidegger's and Carnap's. The essay shows how their legacy deeply influenced the later course of criticism to epistemic claim of metaphysics from an unitary point of view.
GRAPH-BASED RULES FOR XML DATA CONVERSION TO OWL ONTOLOGY
2010
International audience; The paper presents a flexible method to enrich and populate an existing OWL ontology from XML data based on graph-based rules. These rules are defined in order to populate automatically a new version of an OWL ontology. Today, most of data exchanged between information systems is done with the help of the XML document. Leading researches in the domain of database systems are moving to semantic model in order to store data and its semantics definition. This flexible method consists in populating an existing OWL ontology from XML data. In paper we present such a method based on the definition of a graph which represents rules that drive the populating process.
Ontology mapping specification in description logics for cooperative systems
2006
Semantics driven interaction using natural language in students tutoring
2007
The aim of this work is to introduce a semantic integration between an ontology and a chatbot in an Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) to interact with students using natural language. The interaction process is driven by the use of a purposely defined ontology. In the ontology two types of conceptual relations are defined. Besides the usual relations, which are used to define the domain's structure, another type of relation is used to define the navigation schema inside the ontology according to the need of managing uncertainty. Uncertainty level is related to student knowledge level about the involved concepts. In this work we propose an ITS for the Java programming language called TutorJ…
