2022

Research Findings: The aim of the present study was to identify profiles of kindergarten teachers based on the observed quality of interactions with the children in their classrooms and to explore possible differences between the profiles in terms of teachers’ occupational well-being and teacher and classroom characteristics. Understanding Different Approaches to ECE Pedagogy through Tensions

2021

Publisher Copyright: © 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. The concept of pedagogy is the key to understanding pedagogy in early childhood education (ECE) in the Nordic countries, which are known for their high quality of life and education. However, in ECE, there are several different approaches toward pedagogy and it can be said that pedagogy is a multidimensional and dynamic concept. In this paper, the different approaches to pedagogy are defined and reconceptualized through an integrative literature analysis focusing on scientific papers and research reports of the concept. Five approaches to pedagogy were constructed: pedagogy through interaction, pedagogy through s…

“Äänestin jaloillani!” Ammatin vaihtaneiden varhaiskasvatuksen opettajien näkökulmia työn ja toimintakulttuuriin muutokseen

2023

Huoli ammatinvaihtajien määrästä opetus- ja kasvatusalalla on yleistynyt Suomessa kuluneen vuosikymmenen aikana. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastelemme ammatista poistuneiden varhaiskasvatuksen opettajien (n = 164) kokemuksia ammatinvaihtoon johtaneista tekijöistä sekä ammatinvaihdon asemoitumista työuran eri vaiheisiin. Monimenetelmällisen tutkimuksen analyysitapoina olivat laadullinen sisällönanalyysi sekä tilastollinen vertailu. Paikansimme ammatinvaihtoon johtaneita tekijöitä neljälle tasolle: yhteiskunnalliselle, organisaation, relationaaliselle sekä yksilölliselle tasolle. Tuloksemme osoittavat ammatinvaihtopäätöksen muodostuvan useista eri tekijöistä, emmekä voineet paikantaa yksittäistä …

Child–educator disagreements in Finnish early childhood education and care: young children’s possibilities for influence

2022

This study explores young children’s possibilities for influence in situations of child–educator disagreement in Finnish early childhood education and care (ECEC). Data were gathered from observations conducted in four ECEC groups of under three year-olds. A total of 112 child–educator disagreements were analysed qualitatively using reflexive thematic analysis. Children’s influence was rather limited in most disagreements, as these involved the established institutional order as manifested in the rules and norms of daily activities and educators’ control over children’s bodies and material resources. However, disagreements over social rules and the ongoing social situation often allowed chi…
