Multicore optical fibres for astrophotonics

We report progress towards multimode (MM) fibre filters for suppressing the OH emission that hinders ground-based observation of the early Universe. Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) can filter these narrow spectral lines in single-mode (SM) fibres [1]. Implementing them in MM fibres well-matched to astronomical instruments requires transitions between the MM fibre and several SM fibres [2]. Such hand-crafted “photonic lanterns” require many identical FBGs to be made and spliced in place. Instead we are pursuing the idea in multicore (MC) fibres, Fig. 1(a). Efficient formulation of Multimode Equivalent Networks for 2-D waveguide steps through Kummer's transformation

In this paper we present a new and improved formulation for the Multimode Equivalent Network (MEN) representation of arbitrary waveguide junctions. In the new formulation the Kummer's transformation is used to separate the kernel into dynamic and static parts, by introducing higher order extraction terms. The main difference with respect to the old formulation is that the approximation of the kernel is more accurate and the numerical computations are more efficient. In addition to theory, both formulations are compared in terms of efficiency and convergence thereby fully validating the proposed new formulation.

VIBPACK: A package to treat multidimensional electron-vibrational molecular problems with application to magnetic and optical properties

We present a FORTRAN code based on a new powerful and efficient computational approach to solve multidimensional dynamic Jahn-Teller and pseudo Jahn-Teller problems. This symmetry-assisted approach constituting a theoretical core of the program is based on the full exploration of the point symmetry of the electronic and vibrational states. We also report some selected examples of increasing complexity aimed to display the theoretical background as well as the advantages and capabilities of the program to evaluate of the energy pattern, magnetic and optical properties of large multimode vibronic systems. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Remote optical monitoring in remotely power assisted passive optical networks

In this paper, the authors present the latest results on a simple and low cost method to achieve a dynamic and flexible network monitoring. By placing several fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) along the passive optical gigabit Ethernet infrastructure (GePON), the proposed modified optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) is able to monitor the entire system by simply tuning its working wavelength. Furthermore, the optical network terminals (ONT), at the end users premises, have been interconnected to the trunk via an innovative cable able to both carry the optical signal as well as the power supply.

On the designing of densely dispersion-managed optical fiber systems for ultrafast optical communication

We present some theoretical and experimental results which suggest the possibility of constructing a non-empirical methodology of designing optical transmission systems with ultra high bit-rate per channel. Theoretically, we present an average dispersion decreasing densely dispersion-managed (A4dm) fiber system, which exhibits many advantages over the densely dispersion-managed fiber system, such as the possibility of transmitting chirp-free Gaussian pulses at 160 Gbit/s per channel over transoceanic distances, with a reduced energy and minimal intra-channel interaction. A fiber-based limiter at 170 Gbit/s for all-optical regeneration

We report the numerical and experimental studies of a spectrally filtered fiber-based optical limiter at 170 Gbit/s. The device, including less than 1 km-long of highly nonlinear optical fiber and a 3 nm-width filter, exhibits good performance at an average input power of 14.5 dBm. No power penalty has been observed and a strong robustness against optical noise has been demonstrated.

Second harmonic generation and beam cleaning in optically poled multimode graded-index fibers

Recent experimental results have confirmed that nonlinear effects in multimode graded-index (MM-GRIN) fibers lead to a wealth of observable spatiotemporal effects. In spite of the large number of modes supported by the fiber, by increasing the input power the transverse profile evolves in a clean bell-shaped beam [1, 2]. Next, the input laser line experiences a strong spectral broadening and Geometric Parametric Instability (GPl) peaks are observed [3].

Optical spectra beyond the amplifier bandwidth limitation in dispersion-managed mode-locked fiber lasers

We investigate the intracavity pulse dynamics inside dispersionmanaged mode-locked fiber lasers, and show numerically that for a relatively wide range of parameters, pulse compression dynamics in the passive anomalous fiber can be accompanied by a significant enhancement of the spectral width by a factor close to 3. Varying the average cavity dispersion also reveals chaotic dynamics for certain dispersion ranges. The impact of the implementation of an optical output port to tap optimal pulse features is discussed. © 2011 Optical Society of America.

Spatial beam cleaning in quadratic nonlinear medium

We show experimentally that a laser beam scrambled by propagation in a short segment of multimode fiber may be cleaned by the nonlinear propagation in KTP cristal with type-II second-harmonic generation.
