Bloch wave theory of modulational polarization instabilities in birefringent optical fibers
1997
The modulational instability gain spectra, of an arbitrarily polarized intense pump wave that experiences periodic nonlinear polarization rotation in a birefringent optical fiber, are derived by Floquet analysis. The predictions of the linearized analysis are confirmed by numerical simulations of the coupled nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations.
Manakov Polarization Modulation Instability in Normal Dispersion Optical Fiber
2014
We observed polarization modulation instability in the normal dispersion regime of randomly birefringent multi-km telecom optical fiber. The instability is pumped by two wavelength multiplexed and orthogonally polarized intense continuous lasers.
Bistable phase locking in rocked lasers
2006
Abstract We investigate analytically and numerically the dynamics of single mode lasers with periodic ac injection (rocked lasers). Such lasers show phase bistability as the phase of the light emitted by such lasers can lock to either of two values shifted by π. Locking regimes for different lasers are studied showing that the system response is strongly modified in class B lasers due to the influence of relaxation oscillations.
Vortex solitons in photonic crystal fibers
2003
We demonstrate the existence of vortex soliton solutions in photonic crystal fibers. We analyze the role played by the photonic crystal fiber defect in the generation of optical vortices. An analytical prediction for the angular dependence of the amplitude and phase of the vortex solution based on group theory is also provided. Furthermore, all the analysis is performed in the non-paraxial regime.
Optical demultiplexing of millimeter-wave subcarriers for wireless channel distribution employing dual wavelength FBGs
2007
An optical mm-wave demultiplexer is presented. Double sideband modulation with suppressed optical carrier and filtering properties of dual overwritten fiber Bragg gratings are the fundamentals for optical demultiplexing of mm-wave radio-on-fiber signals: using a single optical carrier, Millimeter-wave signals of 20 and 40 GHz frequencies carrying independent data are created, transmitted over fiber, demultiplexed and wireless distributed to be detected and data recovered in a mobile unit. Double sideband modulation with suppressed optical carrier yields no power penalty due to chromatic dispersion, while the filtering properties of the dual overwritten fiber Bragg gratings allow less than −…
Transverse effects in ring fiber laser multimode instabilities
2000
We study the influence of the transverse structure of pump and lasing fields and of the width of the doped region on the conditions for the appearance of the multimode instability in an ${\mathrm{Er}}^{3+}$-doped ring fiber laser. We show that the instability can be inhibited while maintaining a large output power when the radius of the doped region is a fraction of the core radius.
Spatiotemporal Complexity in Step-Index Multimode Fibers
2016
We study supercontinuum generation in step-index fibers with a varying number of modes. We observe new spatiotemporal effects, including evidence of multimode spectral incoherent solitons, and a universal transition to spatiotemporal complexity.
Coherent effects in the multimode dynamics of inhomogeneously broadened ring lasers
2004
We investigate under which conditions coherent effects manifest in the multimode dynamics of inhomogeneously broadened ring lasers. In particular, we demonstrate that for long enough cavities standard rate equations for class-B lasers fail in describing the multimode dynamics.
Experiments on optical fiber interferometers and laser modes
1992
Three experiments on optical fiber interferometers, suitable for a teaching laboratory, are described. The guiding characteristics of single mode optical fibers enable simple interferometry experiments with large path differences to be carried out easily. These experiments show that the fringe visibility exhibits a periodic dependence on the path difference when using a multilongitudinal mode HeNe laser. A simple model can be used to explain this dependence in terms of the mode spectrum of the laser.
