A Multi-Port Approach to Solve Distribution Networks with Meshes and PV Nodes
2007
A new methodology based on the backward/forward (b/f) technique for the load flow solution in distribution systems is here proposed. The methodology takes efficiently into account the fixed voltage nodes and uses a reduced bus impedance matrix. In this way, it is possible to attain, for the unknowns at the PV nodes, the same values that are attainable solving the network with the methods adopted for transmission systems. With the same methodology it is possible to take into account also the meshes. If the network contains only meshes, the relevant model is linear and it is the one including the compensation currents. The presence of PV nodes introduces non linearity in the model and an iter…
Multi-objective long term optimal dispatch of distributed energy resources in micro-grids
2010
The amount of distributed generators in power distribution systems is evermore increasing, and the potential benefits and drawbacks are becoming clearer. The optimal management of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) in microgrids is essential to guarantee their best exploitation. Optimal operation allows to maximize their benefits, such as reduction of network energy losses, reduction of carbon emissions and to minimize the negative effects of a strong DER penetration, such as the increase of infrastructural investment and operational costs. Hence, DER management is a multi-objective problem in which many objectives of interest, often conflicting, need to be optimized simultaneously. In this…
Multi-objective Optimization of Energy Hubs at the Crossroad of Three Energy Distribution Networks
2016
This paper provides a multi-objective optimization framework aimed at the management of a multi-carrier energy system involving both electricity and hydrogen. Using the concept of the multi-carrier hub, the proposed system has been modelled in order to define completely every energy flow inside the plant. After that, a heuristic multi-objective optimization algorithm, the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II, has been implemented for the energy management of the plant, taking into account simultaneously three different objective functions related to economic and technical goals. This optimization process provides the set point defining the working configuration of the plant for a dayl…
Application to an italian distribution system of a multiobjective optimal Volt/VAR control strategy: improvements and management problems
2007
In this paper, the experiences and results deriving from the application of a multiobjective optimal management strategy to a distribution network supplying an area in province of Palermo, Italy, are presented. The adopted strategy allows, through the interventions on the Under Load Tap Changers (ULTC) of the primary substations and on tie-switches, to reduce power losses and improve the voltage profiles. To solve the optimization problem, an evolutionary approach has been adopted; it employs fuzzy logic for an adequate and simultaneous fulfilment of the different objectives. The application section presents a deep technical and economical analysis of the results attained, applying the opti…

Life Cycle Energy Consumption and Air Emissions Comparison of Alternative and Conventional Bus Fleets in Vietnam
2022
The study (a) assesses the life cycle energy consumption and air emissions impacts of battery electric buses (e-buses) and conventional buses operated in Vietnam, and (b) compares them with those of hydrogen buses. The results indicate that e-buses and hydrogen buses are preferred options compared to conventional buses in terms of energy consumption, GHG emissions and other air quality impacts over their whole life cycle. Life cycle energy consumption of diesel buses is triple that of e-buses, and is significantly higher than that of hydrogen buses. Replacing conventional buses with e-buses can reduce energy consumption by 50%. For GHG emissions and air quality impacts, the adoption of elec…
A SURVEY ON SMART GRIDS ACTIONS AND COMPONENTS FOR ENERGY CONSUMPTIONS OPTIMIZATION
2014
In the paper a survey on the features that a smart grid has to perform for energy consumptions optimization are presented and explained. By optimizing the loads usage with the grid priorities both end-users and the energy providers can save energy (and so CO2 emissions) and money. In the paper the conceive of an architecture in-home and at residential level is proposed to arrange a smart grid with its intelligent and connected load consumers. Qualitative results from the European research project “BeyWatch” are here mentioned in order to explain how the conceived main services in smart grid, like monitoring and control services, energy management services and load management services allow …
Prnu Pattern Alignment for Images and Videos Based on Scene Content
2019
This paper proposes a novel approach for registering the PRNU pattern between different camera acquisition modes by relying on the imaged scene content. First, images are aligned by establishing correspondences between local descriptors: The result can then optionally be refined by maximizing the PRNU correlation. Comparative evaluations show that this approach outperforms those based on brute-force and particle swarm optimization in terms of reliability, accuracy and speed. The proposed scene-based approach for PRNU pattern alignment is suitable for video source identification in multimedia forensics applications.
Social-Behavioral Aware Optimization of Energy Consumption in Smart Homes
2018
Residential energy consumption is skyrocketing, as residential customers in the U.S. alone used 1.4 trillion kilowatt-hours in 2014 and the consumption is expected to increase in the next years. Previous efforts to limit such consumption have included demand response and smart residential environments. However, recent research has shown that such approaches can actually increase the overall energy consumption due to the numerous complex human psychological processes that take place when interacting with electrical appliances. In this paper we propose a social-behavioral aware framework for energy management in smart residential environments. We envision a smart home where appliances are int…
A hybrid system for malware detection on big data
2018
In recent years, the increasing diffusion of malicious software has encouraged the adoption of advanced machine learning algorithms to timely detect new threats. A cloud-based approach allows to exploit the big data produced by client agents to train such algorithms, but on the other hand, poses severe challenges on their scalability and performance. We propose a hybrid cloud-based malware detection system in which static and dynamic analyses are combined in order to find a good trade-off between response time and detection accuracy. Our system performs a continuous learning process of its models, based on deep networks, by exploiting the growing amount of data provided by clients. The prel…
