Continuous and discontinuous nominal expressions in flexible (or “free”) word order languages: Patterns and correlates

2020

AbstractThis study explores continuous and discontinuous word order patterns of multi-word nominal expressions in flexible word order languages (traditionally referred to as “free word order” or “non-configurational” languages). Besides describing syntagmatic patterns, this paper seeks to identify any functional or other correlates that can be associated with different word orders. The languages under investigation are a number of Australian languages as well as Vedic Sanskrit, all of which have long been known for their syntagmatic flexibility. With respect to continuous order, evidence from several of these languages suggests that default ordering is primarily governed by functional templ…

Noun/pronoun asymmetry in Polish: Against the nominal perspective and the DP-hypothesis

2020

AbstractThis paper argues that the Polish noun-pronoun asymmetry in which the intensifier sam ‘self’ precedes nouns and follows pronominals is not a simple case of configuration in the DP, whereby pronouns, unlike nominals, target D0 for referential reasons (cf. Rutkowski 2002, 2012). Such viewpoints, in the case of Polish, are unfortunate because they appear to underlyingly work on and draw from the syntax of nominal projections characteristic of English or Italian i.e., languages with articles. We show that the asymmetry pertains to various semantic interpretations of sam, the different semantic specification of nominals and pronominals, and the flexible word order property. What we need,…

Financial Structure of the Family Business: Evidence From a Group of Small Spanish Firms

2007

This article presents empirical evidence on the determinants of the financial behavior of small family businesses and their differences from nonfamily small businesses. Taking into account two consolidated financial approaches, (1) the trade-off theory and (2) the pecking order theory, several hypotheses on the financial behavior of both groups of firms have been tested. By estimating these models through panel data methodology, using a sample of Spanish family businesses together with another control group of nonfamily businesses, we have obtained results confirming that a business's family nature does lead it to employ financial policy different from the rest of businesses. Furthermore, …

Numeral classifiers in East Asia

2017

AbstractThe understanding of the functional range of numeral classifiers requires a combined effort from different theoretical approaches and the integration of findings from syntax, semantics and pragmatics. This article demonstrates how such an integrative perspective creates new insights into classifiers in Sinitic languages in the fields of counting and word order, the expression of definiteness and indefiniteness and the syntax of verbal classification.

The average element order and the number of conjugacy classes of finite groups

2021

Abstract Let o ( G ) be the average order of the elements of G, where G is a finite group. We show that there is no polynomial lower bound for o ( G ) in terms of o ( N ) , where N ⊴ G , even when G is a prime-power order group and N is abelian. This gives a negative answer to a question of A. Jaikin-Zapirain.

ON THE 3D CONTROL OF THE FUNCTIONAL STRUCTURE OF MOLECULAR THIN FILMS

2013

Apart from being a very challenging issue, three-dimensional order in molecular thin films is of critical importance to gain and exploit a series of key properties in emerging fields like organic/hybrid photovoltaics, organic thin film transistors, sensors and plastic electronics in general. For example, the development of nanostructured bi-continuous bulk heterojunctions (BHJs) is an important advancement leading to improved photovoltaic power conversion efficiency with respect to planar heterojunctions. Here we show an original low cost, easy-to-implement and multi-tasking bottom-up approaches to modulate the supramolecular morphology in three-dimensional (3D) systems together with their …

La adopción abierta en el derecho español

2016

El reconocimiento del derecho del menor adoptado a mantener contactos o relaciones con sus familiares de origen y sus anteriores acogedores representa un nuevo modelo de adopción en el Derecho español, denominado “adopción abierta”, recientemente introducida por la Ley 26/2015, de 28 de julio, que reforma el sistema español de protección de la infancia y la adolescencia. La nueva regulación se inspira en el Derecho de otros países pero tiene precedentes en ciertas normas autonómicas españolas The recognition of the right of the adopted children to maintain contacts or relations with their families of origin and previous welcoming, represents a new model of adoption in the Spanish law, which…

El orden público ante la libertad religiosa. Reflexiones sobre un debate

2020
