Osteoporosis: Economic Burden of Disease in Italy.

2020

Background and Objective: Today, osteoporosis is the most common bone disease and an important public health problem in all developed countries. The objective of this study was to estimate the costs associated with the management and treatment of osteoporosis in order to assess the economic burden in Italy for 2017, in terms of direct medical costs and social security costs. Methods: A cost of illness model was developed to estimate the average cost per year sustained by the NHS (National Health Service) and Social Security System in Italy. A systematic literature review was performed to obtain epidemiological, direct and indirect costs parameters where available. Hospitalisation costs were…

Severity of Covid-19 Clinical Outcomes and Mortality in Multiple Myeloma Patients over Year 1 of the Pandemic

2021

Abstract Introduction In the first weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic when healthcare systems in many areas were overstretched, we documented that hospital mortality in multiple myeloma (MM) patients infected by Sars-Cov-2 was 50% higher than in age matched Covid-19 patients without cancer. In the following months, the pressure on healthcare systems in Spain continued although it did not reach the extreme levels of the first weeks of the pandemic. In this study, we proposed to determine if the severity of Covid-19 outcomes in MM patients has changed over the first year of the pandemic. Patients and methods The Spanish MM Collaborative Group (Pethema-GEM) conducted a survey at national level on …

Optimizing diagnostic algorithms to advance Hepatitis C elimination in Italy: A cost effectiveness evaluation

2021

Objectives: Optimized diagnostic algorithms to detect active infections are crucial to achieving HCV elimination. We evaluated the cost effectiveness and sustainability of different algorithms for HCV active infection diagnosis, in a context of a high endemic country for HCV infection. Methods: A Markov disease progression model, simulating six diagnostic algorithms in the birth cohort 1969‐1989 over a 10‐year horizon from a healthcare perspective was used. Conventionally diagnosis of active HCV infection is through detection of antibodies (HCV‐Ab) detection followed by HCV‐RNA or HCV core antigen (HCV‐Ag) confirmatory testing either on a second sample or by same sample reflex testing. The …

Publications on paediatric anaesthesia: a quantitative analysis of publication activity and international recognition.

2000

A comprehensive compilation of the current international literature on paediatric anaesthesia is lacking. The aim of this study was to identify all articles on clinical practice in paediatric anaesthesia, to name the respective journals, and to assess the publication activity and international recognition of selected countries for a 6-yr period (1993–1998). The search comprised an article-to-article evaluation (‘hand search') of 12 peer-reviewed anaesthesia journals, as well as an Internet-based (‘SilverPlatter') MedlineTM-search (3.900 medical journals, US National Library of Medicine), both limited to original articles, case reports, reviews and editorials. Selected physical characteristi…

Religious Organizations and Local Self-government Units as Entities Cooperating in The Enforcement of Criminal Judgements

2019

Związki wyznaniowe oraz jednostki samorządu terytorialnego to podmioty współdziałające w wykonywaniu kar, środków karnych, kompensacyjnych, zabezpieczających, zapobiegawczych oraz przepadku. Można je również traktować w kategoriach organów społecznej kontroli nad wykonywaniem tych orzeczeń. Współdziałanie takich podmiotów uzyskało rangę dyrektywy ustawowej i służyć ma readaptacji społecznej skazanych i zapobieganiu przestępczości. W przypadku przedstawicieli związków wyznaniowych współdziałanie posiada także charakter wychowawczy i poprawczy. Religious organizations and local self-government units are entities cooperating in the implementation of penalties, penal, compensatory, protective a…

The Importance and Role of Social Policy in Maintaining Macroeconomic Stability

2021

Pension systems have the role of reducing the financial risk associated with the loss of the ability to carry out professional activities for income, a risk that determines poverty and is associated with severe material deprivation. The objective of this chapter is to emphasize the role of social policy in society and in macroeconomic policies in order to maintain socioeconomic stability and promote sustainable economic growth.

Low-Flow Anaesthesia

2000

Healthcare reform has placed increasing pressure on anaesthetists to consider the costs of current anaesthesia strategies. Although the cost of anaesthesia constitutes only a small proportion of total healthcare costs, anaesthetic drug expenditures have been a focus of cost-containment efforts. Low-flow anaesthesia is a simple method of reducing the fresh gas flow rate for anaesthetic gases during inhalational anaesthesia. A knowledge of the pharmacokinetic behaviour of inhaled anaesthetics and the use of modern equipment and monitoring technology meet the requirements for safe application of this anaesthetic technique. Millions of patients receive general anaesthesia each year, and thus th…

Backbone of credit relationships in the Japanese credit market

2016

We detect the backbone of the weighted bipartite network of the Japanese credit market relationships. The backbone is detected by adapting a general method used in the investigation of weighted networks. With this approach we detect a backbone that is statistically validated against a null hypothesis of uniform diversification of loans for banks and firms. Our investigation is done year by year and it covers more than thirty years during the period from 1980 to 2011. We relate some of our findings with economic events that have characterized the Japanese credit market during the last years. The study of the time evolution of the backbone allows us to detect changes occurred in network size,…

Subcellular distribution of choline acetyltransferase by immunogold electron microscopy in non-neuronal cells: Placenta, airways and murine embryonic…

2012

Abstract Aims Acetylcholine is synthesized in more or less all mammalian cells. However, little is known about the subcellular location of acetylcholine synthesis. Therefore, in the present experiments the subcellular location of the synthesizing enzyme choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) was investigated by anti-ChAT immunogold electron microscopy in human placenta and airways as well as in a murine embryonic stem cell line (CGR8 cell line). Main methods Human tissue was obtained as so-called surplus tissue (after delivery/surgical removal because of lung tumor); the CGR8 stem cell line was cultured under standard conditions. For human tissue a monoclonal mouse anti-ChAT antibody (ab) was use…
