Patient education in physiotherapy in total hip arthroplasty (THA) - The perspective of physiotherapists

2018

Background and Purpose There is limited knowledge about patients’ and physiotherapists’ perceptions of patient education in physiotherapy in hip arthroplasty. The aim of this study was to describe physiotherapists’ conceptions of the patient education in physiotherapy needed by patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty. Methods The data for this qualitative study were collected using group and individual semi-structured interviews. Seven physiotherapists were interviewed. The research data were analyzed using a phenomenographic method. Results Three categories of patient education in physiotherapy in hip arthroplasty were produced and the categories formed a hierarchy. The narrowest descri…

Cost-effectiveness analysis of patent foramen ovale closure with Amplatzer plus medical therapy compared to medical therapy in patients with a histor…

2021

Abstract Background A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is formed when the ovale foramen does not close spontaneously or re-opens leaving the right and left atrium connected. The present study was conducted to analyze the cost-effectiveness of PFO closure with Amplatzer device plus medical therapy (MT) compared to MT alone in the French reimbursement system for PFO patients with a prior history of stroke, using the RESPECT study data. Methods A multi-state Markov model was used. The analysis was conducted from a collective perspective over a 10-year time horizon with 4% discount applied for costs and health effects. The simulated population included adult patients with PFO. Sub-group analysis was …

Political issues in internal medicine in Europe. A position paper

2004

Abstract What will be the future of internal medicine in Europe? Because of rapidly growing concerns regarding the position of internal medicine in many European countries, the European Federation of Internal Medicine (EFIM) has established a working group to analyze the situation. Being well aware of the variation in working practices in the different countries, the members of the group used an “all-European” approach to answer the following questions: • Are there problems for internal medicine? If so, what are these problems and why? • Why do the health care systems in the European countries need internal medicine? • Why do patients need internal medicine? • What needs to be done? Interna…

Discourse Analytic Study of Counseling Sessions in Stroke Physiotherapy

2006

Studies on the interaction between physiotherapists and patients during treatment sessions have found low levels of communicative participation by patients and lack of direct influence by patients on the content of their treatment. This article reports the results of 7 counseling sessions in which physiotherapists and patients with stroke and their caregivers discussed the patients' postural control and balance, which had been tested and videotaped at different stages of the rehabilitation process. The physiotherapists' discourses relating to the videotaped test performances were either brief comments on the patient's performance or critical appraisals with references to difficulties encoun…

Community-dwelling older adults and their informal carers call for more attention to psychosocial needs - Interview study on unmet care needs in thre…

2022

Background: Unmet care needs are usually defined in terms of receiving sufficient help in instrumental activities and activities of daily living. Research on unmet needs is mostly based on quantitative data. Older persons’ and informal carers’ views and experiences have received less attention. Methods: In this paper, we rely on a definition of unmet needs which includes both unmet needs due to insufficient care and those situations where informal carers experience undue strain. Using theory-driven content analysis, we examine community-dwelling older adults’ and their informal carers’ experiences of unmet needs: what kind of unmet needs they have, why and in which ways these needs are left…

New Challenges for Sustainable Organizations in Light of Agenda 2030 for Sustainability

2021

Sustainability is one of humanity’s most daunting issues at present. Increasing popula- tion, escalation of anthropogenic activities, industrialization, modern agricultural practices that pollute water, air, and soil around the world, and ever-increasing greenhouse gas emissions mean that sustainability is now in doubt [1]. In response to these critical concerns, the world has come up with several initiatives including Agenda 2030. Agenda 2030 is a commitment to eradicate poverty and achieve sustainable development worldwide, ensuring that no one is left behind by 2030. Its adoption was a landmark achievement, providing a shared vision towards sustainable development for all. Its 17 Sustain…

Personality and the gender wage gap

2012

In this study, we investigate whether personality traits contribute towards a better understanding of the reasons for the gender wage gap. We explore whether two of the personality factors put forward by Bowles et al. (2001) as likely to be incentive enhancing in the employer–employee relationship can explain the difference in wages for women and men. These are (1) personal self efficacy (Locus of Control (LoC)) and (2) time preference. We also study the role of the so called Big Five personality traits (extraversion, emotional stability, agreeableness, openness intellect and conscientiousness), which have been associated with earnings in several recent studies. Using a sample of Dutch empl…

Consent to Treatment and Anamnesis as Problem of Communication with Minor Patients in Healthcare Decision-Making

2016

Abstract Lately lawyers and medical professionals pay more attention too the process of minor patient healthcare. The research shall address the issues of legal relationship between minor patients and medical professionals, consent to treatment of minor patients and communication problems including the scope of information which the doctor can provide to the minor patient’s relatives to protect themselves and patients. Legislation prescribes that the information provided by the medical professional to the minor patient must be not only easy-to-understand, but also be consistent with the patient’s age maturity. However, in Latvia, for example, there are no guidelines that specify how medical…

Association of derived neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (dNLR) with pathological complete response (pCR) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (CT)

2019

Abstract Background dNLR is a novel biomarker associated with clinical outcome in solid tumors including early stage breast cancer (BC). Here we report the association of dNLR with pCR in triple-negative (TN) and luminal BC patients (pts) treated with neoadjuvant CT. Methods This was a retrospective analysis of two randomized studies (GEICAM/2006-03 - NCT00432172 and ETNA - NCT01822314) involving 821 pts with early stage (>2cm) or locally advanced TN or luminal BC receiving anthracycline/taxane-based CT +/- carboplatin (GEICAM/2006-03) or nab-paclitaxel/paclitaxel followed by anthracycline regimen (ETNA). dNLR was calculated as the ratio of neutrophils and the difference between total leuko…
