Teaching and Sexual Prejudices. New Training Needs
2013
Abstract This study focused on the future trainers’ attitude in respect of gender, sex and sexual orientation. Contrary to previous research studies, which associate to a greater knowledge a better attitude, our results shown that prejudices are still present even for graduate students. Therefore, it urges a reflection on a new teaching paradigm able to provide a plural gender identity vision. Training processes must be more than a mere intellectual education: a reflection on professional future.
“Speaking in Terror: Femininity, Monstrosity and ‘Race’ in Early Modern Culture”
2002
The chapter examines how the intersecting vectors of gender and race contribute to the configuration of monstrosity in early modern drama and anatomy, and how this construction is simultaneously powerful and haunted by the fear of the 'other'.
Characterization of two d-β-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase populations in heavy and light mitochondria from jerboa (Jaculus orientalis) liver
2005
Mitochondrial membrane-bound and phospholipid-dependent D-beta-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (BDH) (EC 1.1.1.30), a ketone body converting enzyme in mitochondria, has been studied in two populations of mitochondria (heavy and light) of jerboa (Jaculus orientalis) liver. The results reveal significant differences between the BDH of the two mitochondrial populations in terms of protein expression, kinetic parameters and physico-chemical properties. These results suggest that the beta-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenases from heavy and light mitochondria are isoform variants. These differences in BDH distribution could be the consequence of cell changes in the lipid composition of the inner mitochon…
Relation between Social Conservatism, Moral Competence, Moral Orientations, and the Importance of Moral Foundations
2017
AbstractThis paper examines the relation between moral competence, moral orientations, importance of moral foundations, and political orientation, by combining two theoretical approaches in moral psychology--the cognitive perspective and social-intuitionist perspective. The participants (Study 1 N=348, aged 18 to 67, and Study 2 N = 361, aged 16 to 74) completed the Moral Competence Test (formerly Moral Judgment Test, Lind, 1978, 2008), the 30-Item Full Version of the Moral Foundations Questionnaire (Graham, Haidt & Nosek, 2008), and measurements of political orientation (a seven-point self-evaluation scale in study 1 and an 8-item social conservatism scale in Study 2). There was a nega…
DNA Origami-Mediated Substrate Nanopatterning of Inorganic Structures for Sensing Applications
2019
Structural DNA nanotechnology provides a viable route for building from the bottom-up using DNA as construction material. The most common DNA nanofabrication technique is called DNA origami, and it allows high-throughput synthesis of accurate and highly versatile structures with nanometer-level precision. Here, it is shown how the spatial information of DNA origami can be transferred to metallic nanostructures by combining the bottom-up DNA origami with the conventionally used top-down lithography approaches. This allows fabrication of billions of tiny nanostructures in one step onto selected substrates. The method is demonstrated using bowtie DNA origami to create metallic bowtie-shaped an…
Diversity in local cultivars of Pisum sativum collected from home gardens in Sweden
2015
Abstract Although one would assume that finding any local cultivars in home gardens in a modern society such as Sweden is unlikely, such cultivars were in fact found. More than 170 seed accessions of vegetables, pulses and other seed-propagated garden crops maintained in home gardens and dating back at least to the 1950s have been assembled following the nationwide ‘Seed Call’. Of these, 32 garden pea accessions were taxonomically characterized and compared with 43 accessions already present in the gene bank. In addition to morphological descriptors, SSR and retrotransposon-based iPBS markers were applied. Based on five SSR markers, potential duplicates could be located within nine pair/gro…
The Genus Homo: Origin, Speciation and Dispersal
2011
The taxonomical interpretation of the fossil record of our own genus Homo is still highly controversial. In spite of obvious major advances concerning the acquisition, analysis and interpretation of the fossil specimens there currently remain unbridgeable disagreements concerning the origin, speciation and dispersal of our genus. The polarized positions result foremost from different methodological approaches for species recognition (e.g., Tattersall 1986; Wolpoff and Caspari 1997; Schwartz 2000a; Wiesemuller et al. 2003; Jobling et al. 2004; Rothe and Henke 2006). Beside the Multiregional Evolutionary Model (MRE) there are different Recent African Origin Models (RAOMs) with varying numbers…
Seed isozyme variation in Petrocoptis A. Braun (Caryophyllaceae).
2001
Abstract The electrophoretic patterns of seven isozyme systems (ADH, AMY, AAT, GDH, LAP, MDH, and SOD) obtained from dormant seeds from 44 accessions belonging to 12 Petrocoptis taxa were compared in order to clarify taxonomic relationships within the genus. Overall, electrophoretic zymograms showed the presence of up 28 electromorphs, of which 26 were polymorphic among accessions. Mantel tests revealed a moderate level of correlation between the geographic distance matrix and several dissimilarity matrices based on the isozyme data ( r =0.3052–0.3376). The electrophoretic profiles of seed isozymes did not match closely the analytical taxonomic framework drawn from morphology. Many electrom…
