Molecular Biomineralization: Toward an Understanding of the Biogenic Origin of Polymetallic Nodules, Seamount Crusts, and Hydrothermal Vents

2011

Polymetallic nodules and crusts, hydrothermal vents from the Deep Sea are economically interesting, since they contain alloying components, e.g., manganese or cobalt, that are used in the production of special steels; in addition, they contain rare metals applied for plasma screens, for magnets in hard disks, or in hybrid car motors. While hydrothermal vents can regenerate in weeks, polymetallic nodules and seamount crusts grow slowly. Even though the geochemical basis for the growth of the nodules and crusts has been well studied, the contribution of microorganisms to the formation of these minerals remained obscure. Recent HR-SEM (high-resolution scanning electron microscopy) analyses of …

2016

The word minerality is widely used and spread by professionals and consumers. Since it’s first appearence in Marguerite Duras’ “Les Impudents” in 1946 in relation to wines, it passed from a fad in the early 1980’s to a phenomenon and a sensory reality today, even though no precise definition exists. Since the last decade, the use of the term “mineral” or “minerality” by the press, guides or producers themselves has notably increased in the world of wine. This enthusiasm for "minerality" concept was the origin of clever marketing and the reason for consumers to ask: What is minerality? Should I pay more for a bottle of mineral wine? The aim of this thesis is to better understand the concept o…

Two-year retrospective analysis of the international impact of Journal of Optometry: part II

2011

The Journal of Optometry – Peer-reviewed Journal of the Spanish General Council of Optometrists- was launched in March 2008 publishing the first issue by September 2008. It is now reaching 2.5 years of activity in spreading clinical and scientific knowledge in the field of Optometry and Visual Science and related areas. Despite this short path within the international scientific publication scenario, it is appropriate to stop and reflect about the challenges, achievements and the numbers that are making J Optom a reference in this competitive area. In this editorial we will discuss the steps followed to setup the journal and the actual international impact in terms of audience from the read…

Gisekia(Gisekiaceae): Phylogenetic relationships, biogeography, and ecophysiology of a poorly known C4lineage in the Caryophyllales

2014

• Premise of the study: Gisekiaceae are a monogeneric family of the core Caryophyllales distributed in arid regions of Africa and Asia. The only widespread species of the genus, Gisekia pharnaceoides, performs C4 photosynthesis based on CO2 compensation point measurements. This study investigates the C4 syndrome and its evolution in Gisekia. The infrageneric relationships, distribution and bioclimatic preferences of Gisekia are also investigated.• Methods: Leaf gas exchange characteristics, activity of Rubisco and major C4 cycle enzymes, and ultrastructural characteristics of mesophyll and bundle sheath cells are studied for Gisekia pharnaceoides. δ13C values and leaf anatomy are analyzed f…

From the Car Style Pregnancy towards the Brand Country Origin Recognition

2019

AbstractIn the modern automotive industry, a car's style clearly defines its brand. In the context of globalization, a question has recently emerged concerning the relationship between a country's culture and the car style of a particular brand. The style is one way to place car morphologies into a meaningful structure, called the “telling structure.” This research hypothesizes that a stylist tries to compress a car's form and make it a refined unicum that is streamlined with some inherent features, which express a brand's cultural aesthetics. Using the cognitive paradigm that an end user transforms explicit references into implic-it references and that the telling structure of a car's desi…
