Effective Management of Severe Asthma with Biologic Medications in Adult Patients: A Literature Review and International Expert Opinion

International audience; Severe asthma often remains uncontrolled despite effective treatments and evidence-based guidelines. A group of global experts in asthma and biologic medications from nine countries considered the most relevant clinical variables to manage severe asthma in adult patients and guide treatment choice. Thermodynamic Behavior of Non-Ionic Tri-block Copolymers in Water at Three Temperatures

Apparent molar volumes (V Φ) of aqueous solutions of some copolymers, based on ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO) units, were determined as functions of concentration at three temperatures. Viscosity measurements were also carried out on some of these systems. The effects studied include how the molecular architecture and the molecular weight affect the aggregation of the copolymer, keeping constant the EO/PO ratio. Modeling of the volumetric data yielded the partial molar volume of the copolymer in the standard (V°) and the aggregated (V M) states, as well as the equilibrium constant for micellization and the aggregation number. Aging Negatively Affects Estrogens-Mediated Effects on Nitric Oxide Bioavailability by Shifting ERα/ERβ Balance in Female Mice

AIMS: Aging is among the major causes for the lack of cardiovascular protection by estrogen (E2) during postmenopause. Our study aims to determine the mechanisms whereby aging changes E2 effects on nitric oxide (NO) production in a mouse model of accelerated senescence (SAM). METHODS AND RESULTS: Although we found no differences on NO production in females SAM prone (SAMP, aged) compared to SAM resistant (SAMR, young), by either DAF-2 fluorescence or plasmatic nitrite/nitrate (NO2/NO3), in both cases, E2 treatment increased NO production in SAMR but had no effect in SAMP. Aging is associated with altered neurotransmitter function in the brain. In this study, we measured release parameters for acetylcholine (ACh), norepinephrine and serotonin in the frontoparietal cortex of young and aged rats. We also determined cortical amino acid concentrations and nitric oxide (NO) synthase function. Prior to sacrifice, the rats had been tested for Morris water-maze performance. In aged, compared with young rats, we observed a reduction in both uptake of choline and acetylcholine release. Relaxation of human isolated mesenteric arteries by vasopressin and desmopressin.

The effects of vasopressin and deamino-8-D-arginine vasopressin (DDAVP, desmopressin) were studied in artery rings (0.8-1 mm in external diameter) obtained from portions of human omentum during the course of abdominal operations (27 patients). 2. Involvement of tachykinin NK2 receptors in the modulation of spontaneous motility in rat proximal colon.

The role of endogenous tachykinins and the mechanisms whereby they act on NK2 receptors, modulating spontaneous motility, were investigated in rat isolated proximal colon. The mechanical activity was detected as changes in intraluminal pressure. The NK2 receptor antagonist, MEN 10627, produced a concentration-dependent reduction of the contraction amplitude. Luminescence of silica glass containing aluminum oxide

Abstract Optical properties of silica glass with different doping of Al 2 O 3 up to 1.5 mol% were studied. Alumina stimulates creation of a luminescence centers with specific band at 3.3 eV. A new band at 8.2 eV appears in luminescence excitation spectra. There is transport of energy to other luminescence centers associated with an impurity (Ag, Ce) at this energy. Alumina stimulates creation of E′ centers under γ-irradiation beside trapped hole on AlO 4 tetrahedron as well as creation of a silicon related oxygen deficient center (SiODC) under cathodoexcitation.
