Theory of the growth mode for a thin metallic film on an insulating substrate

We have developed a novel theory predicting the growth mode of a thin metallic film on an insulating substrate. This combines ab initio electronic structure calculations for several ordered metal/insulator interfaces (varying both coverage and substrate lattice constant), with a thermodynamic approach based on microscopic calculations. We illustrate this approach for Ag film deposited on MgO(0 0 1) substrate. Ab initio calculations predict high mobility of adsorbed silver atoms on the perfect magnesia surface even at low temperatures. Analysis of Transition Metal Oxides based Heterojunction Solar Cells with S-shaped J-V curves

The use of transition metal oxides for the selective carrier contact in the crystalline silicon solar cells technology is rising to interest for the excellent optoelectrical properties of these materials whose implementation, however, can result in lousy performing cells due to an S-shaped electrical characteristic. In this paper, we fabricated solar cells showing S-shaped J-V curve and carried out an analysis of the reasons of such behavior using a model involving the series of a standard cell equivalent circuit with a Schottky junction in order to explain these atypical performances. Mo-W-containing tetragonal tungsten bronzes through isomorphic substitution of molybdenum by tungsten

Mixed metal oxides based in Mo(W)–Nb–V–Te with tetragonal tungsten bronze (TTB) structure have been synthesized by a hydrothermal method from aqueous solutions of the corresponding Keggin-type heteropolyacids and further heat-treatment in N2 at 700 ◦ C. The materials have been characterized by several physico-chemical techniques, i.e. XRD, Raman, FTIR, SEM-EDS, and TEM. This procedure allows controlling the chemical species to be distributed in the different interstices of the TTB skeleton, which is a key factor to regulate the catalytic properties of the final solid. Synthesis and Comparative Catalytic Study of Zirconia-MnCO3or -Mn2O3for the Oxidation of Benzylic Alcohols

Abstract We report on the synthesis of the zirconia–manganese carbonate ZrO x (x  %)–MnCO3 catalyst (where x=1–7) that, upon calcination at 500 °C, is converted to zirconia–manganese oxide ZrO x (x  %)–Mn2O3. We also present a comparative study of the catalytic performance of the both catalysts for the oxidation of benzylic alcohol to corresponding aldehydes by using molecular oxygen as the oxidizing agent. Evolution of topological superconductivity by orbital-selective confinement in oxide nanowires

We determine the optimal conditions to achieve topological superconducting phases having spin-singlet pairing for a planar nanowire with finite lateral width in the presence of an in-plane external magnetic field. We employ a microscopic description that is based on a three-band electronic model including both the atomic spin-orbit coupling and the inversion asymmetric potential at the interface between oxide band-gap insulators. We consider amplitudes of the pairing gap, spin-orbit interactions and electronic parameters that are directly applicable to nanowires of LaAlO$_3$-SrTiO$_3$. The organic air pollutant cumene hydroperoxide interferes with NOantioxidant role in rehydrating lichen

Organic pollutants effects on lichens have not been addressed. Rehydration is critical for lichens, a burst of free radicals involving NO occurs. Repeated dehydrations with organic pollutants could increase oxidative damage. Our aim is to learn the effects of cumene hydroperoxide (CP) during lichen rehydration using Ramalina farinacea (L.) Ach., its photobiont Trebouxia spp. and Asterochloris erici. Confocal imaging shows intracellular ROS and NO production within myco and phycobionts, being the chloroplast the main source of free radicals. Structure et croissance de nanophases supportées d'oxyde de tungstène

Tungsten trioxide nanorods can be elaborated on muscovite mica substrate through simple vapor deposition method. Growth of rods seems to follow a Stranski-Krastanov model. Their crystallography was investigated by TEM and reveals the presence of hexagonal phase. Such a metastable structure occurs from an interfacial hexagonal tungsten bronze which grows epitaxially on the substrate. This bronze phase contains potassium atoms coming from mica. Concerning the thickest rods, a monoclinic phase grows on the top of the hexagonal one.
