Mass Action Model Applied to the Thermodynamic Properties of Transfer of Nonionic Copolymers from Water to the Aqueous Surfactant Solutions

A thermodynamic model which enables the properties of aqueous copolymer/surfactant mixtures to be fit quantitatively was proposed. Namely, a relationship between the properties of transfer of the unassociated copolymer from water to the aqueous surfactant solutions (DeltaY(t)) and the surfactant concentration was derived. Heat capacities of transfer (ACpt) of unimeric (ethylene oxide)(13)-(propylene oxide)(30)-(ethylene oxide)(13) from water to the aqueous surfactant solutions as functions of the surfactant concentrations (m(S)) were determined at 298 K. The surfactants investigated are sodium hexanoate, sodium heptanoate, sodium octanoate, sodium undecanoate, and sodium dodecanoate. For short alkyl chain surfactants, the profiles of the DeltaCp(t) versus ms curves show maxima and minima; for long alkyl chain surfactants, the maximum becomes sharper and moved to lower ms values whereas the minimum tends to disappear. Structural Characterization of Zirconia Nanoparticles Prepared by Microwave-Hydrothermal Synthesis

Nanocrystalline zirconia powders have been prepared by microwave-hydrothermal synthesis starting from aqueous solution of ZrOCl2·8H2O. Results of investigations on the aqueous suspension stability of the washed zirconia nanopowders by dynamic light scattering showed that the suspension, constituted by superaggregates of nanoparticles (131 ± 10 nm), was stable up to 15 days. Nanopowders were investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy and small angle x-ray scattering measurements which proved that the zirconia nanopowder is constituted by small primary nanoparticles of ca. 8 nm that agglomerate forming bigger aggregates of 50 ± 1 nm.

Speciation and oxidation kinetics of arsenic in the thermal springs of Wiesbaden spa, Germany.

Since 1886 arsenic has been known to be present as a trace component in the Wiesbaden thermal waters at concentrations of over 100 microg L(-1). In this study for the first time molecular level speciation of arsenic was measured both in the water (by HG-AAS) and in wellstone scale deposits (by XANES). Most of the arsenic in the anoxic NaCl-type waters is in the reduced arsenite form. Hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) precipitates in the scale deposits scavenge only the minor dissolved arsenate portion which is, however, accumulated up to 3% w/w. Air pollution in European countries and life expectancy—modelling with the use of neural network

Abstract The present paper discusses a novel methodology based on neural network to determine air pollutants’ correlation with life expectancy in European countries. The models were developed using historical data from the period 1992–2016, for a set of 20 European countries. The subject of the analysis included the input variables of the following air pollutants: sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, particulate matters, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and non-methane volatile organic compounds. Heme oxygenase-1 induction by nitric oxide in RAW 264.7 macrophages is upregulated by a cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitor.

Unstimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages express negligible heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) protein but incubation with the nitric oxide (NO) donor spermine nonoate (SPNO) induced HO-1 and weakly cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2) protein. This effect was potentiated by coincubation with the COX-2 selective inhibitor, SC58125. Cells incubated with SPNO showed a strong increase in HO-1 mRNA levels after 4 h with a significant potentiation in the presence of SC58125, which did not modify HO-1 mRNA stability. The induction of HO-1 by NO and its potentiation by anti-inflammatory agents may play a role in inflammatory and immune responses.

A Solar Photothermocatalytic approach for the CO2 conversion: Investigation of different synergisms on CoO-CuO/Brookite TiO2-CeO2 catalysts

Abstract The photoactive features of the least common polymorph of TiO2, i.e. brookite, were combined with the thermocatalytic redox ones of cerium oxide, focusing on the effects of the addition of small amounts of Co-Cu oxides for the solar CO2 conversion. By considering the characterization data, a surface segregation of the hosted metal oxides on the TiO2-CeO2 composite was evidenced, and their presence increased the amount of oxygen vacancies and improved the charge carriers separation. Abstract This article presents a petrographic comparison of the Rosso Ammonitico facies of Western Sicily and the original Rosso Ammonitico Veronese of Northern Italy based on a total of 27 sections. The Rosso Ammonitico has been the subject of numerous controversies that range from bathyal to shallow-water platform sedimentation. The p53 Tumor Suppressor Network Is a Key Responder to Microenvironmental Components of Chronic Inflammatory Stress

Abstract Activation of the p53 network plays a central role in the inflammatory stress response associated with ulcerative colitis and may modulate cancer risk in patients afflicted with this chronic disease. Here, we describe the gene expression profiles associated with four microenvironmental components of the inflammatory response (NO•, H2O2, DNA replication arrest, and hypoxia) that result in p53 stabilization and activation. Prooxidative therapy is a well-established concept in infectiology and parasitology, in which prooxidative drugs like artemisinin and metronidazole play a pivotal clinical role. Theoretical considerations and earlier studies have indicated that prooxidative therapy might also represent a promising strategy in oncology.
