On the Rock Partridge in the painting “Saint Jerome in the study” by Antonello da Messina.

2012

Pictorial work of Antonello da Messina during the Sicilian period (1455-60) is considered less fruitful and less mature than during his stay in Venice (ca 1474-1476). While some art critics consider the painting “Saint Jerome in the study” a work of the first period, others believe that it was produced during the Venice period. The Authors analysed the plumage characters of the Rock Partridge, Alectoris graeca, depicted with symbolic significance in the painting, to try the identification of the population which the subject used as model could belong to. However, they conclude that the identification as a Sicilian as well as an Alpine Rock Partridge is doubtful and in this case the plumage …

Multidirectional chromosome painting reveals a remarkable syntenic homology between the greater galagos and the slow loris.

2006

We report on the first reciprocal chromosome painting of lorisoids and humans. The chromosome painting showed a remarkable syntenic homology between Otolemur and Nycticebus. Eight derived syntenic associations of human segments are common to both Otolemur and Nycticebus, indicative of a considerable period of common evolution between the greater galago and the slow loris. Five additional Robertsonian translocations form the slow loris karyotype, while the remaining chromosomes are syntenically equivalent, although some differ in terms of centromere position and heterochromatin additions. Strikingly, the breakpoints of the human chromosomes found fragmented in these two species are apparentl…

Women and Demons in the Late Medieval Wall Paintings in the Church of Espoo (Finland)

2017

The late-medieval stone church of Espoo (county of Uusimaa), situated on the south coast close to the current-day capital of Finland, Helsinki, displays a wealth of medieval wall paintings executed around the 1510s by a group of painters that has remained anonymous. In the fourth vault of the north aisle a demon has been depicted as the proxy and associate of women who are seen in typical household tasks of milking and churning. On the west wall above the entrance a depiction shows a demon passing a pair of shoes to a woman, and above, three demons are seen twiddling with a parchment. This article analyses the images and places them in the context of social control that aimed at regulating …

The panel painting represinting Madonna con bambino e San Giovanni of Museo Diocesano of Palermo: Scientific studies for the restoration

2017

The present research focuses on a painting on wood representing the Madonna con Bambino e San Giovanni, attributed to an unknown artist belonging to the Cretan-Venetian school, dated to the end of 16th century. The aim of the study is to provide a complete knowledge of the characteristics of the artefact in order to plane and perform a procedure according to conservative restoration. Historical and artistic evaluations and technical investigations were carried out for identifying the context, the constitutive materials and the executive techniques. The study was supported by the application of non-invasive (multispectral investigations and X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy) and analytical tec…

Lwów w metryce - Kijów we wspomnieniach - Polska w sercu. Historia malarza Włodzimierza Bartoszewicza (1899-1983) i jego peregrynacji

2020

MATERIALS AND ARTISTIC TECHNIQUES OF THE FLEMISH WOODEN ALTAR FROM DEPOSITS OF ABATELLIS PALACE MUSEUM (PALERMO, ITALY)

2022

In the frame of the restoration intervention on a 16th century wooden altar performed by the experts of the Gallery of Art for the Sicilian Region ‘Palazzo Abatellis’, a deep scientific investigation of the artwork has been made by a scientific team in order to individuate the constitutive materials and techniques. The outcomes from the multi-analytical analyses supported the scheduling and monitoring of the conservation treatments and revealed the pictorial materials and underdrawing techniques typical of the artistic production for this typology of work of art widespread between the 15th and 16th centuries in central and northern Europe.

The Madonna suckling the Child, the type of architectural throne on which she is placed and the presence of the rare iconogr…

Los Falcó : a Family of Painters in 16th-century Valencia

2021

Improved chemometric approach for XRF data treatment: application to the reverse glass paintings from the Lipari collection

2023

The Aeolian cultural heritage preserves hundreds of testimonies of the past that have passed through six millennia of history. Among these, the Archeological Park of the Aeolian Islands with the Museum Luigi Bernab`o Brea (Italy) preserves a valuable set of artworks, which are related to a little-known ‘popular’ figurative heritage. It is an assemblage of small glass foils decorated using the technique of reverse painting, datable to between the end of the 17th century and the end of the 18th century, and actually under investigation by historians. Here, an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy study (performed with portable equipment) is combined with a multivariate approach that allows us…

Consolidation tests on the graffiti of the Steri’s prison with nanotechnological Ca(OH)2 dispersed in iso-propanol

2009

The combination of weathering and human activities often induce pyhisicochemical alteration on the surface of wall paintings. One of the most still largely used restoration techniques for these works of art, is based on the application of organic polymers. Due to their ability to stick detached and powdered pigments, these products provide an immediate consolidating effects. Unfortunately, both their aging and their pyhisicochemical incompatibility with the inorganic support can have serious consequences also causing further damage to the work of art. In this paper a new technological approach is presented based on the use of Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles dispersed in isopropanol. Some applicative t…
